Paul Krugman's Parents Owe the World a Retraction

A serious question: Has there ever been a more partisan hack pretending to be an economist than Paul Krugman?

Paul Krugman, November 2009:

...the federal government could provide jobs by ... providing jobs. It’s time for at least a small-scale version of the New Deal’s Works Progress Administration, one that would offer relatively low-paying (but much better than nothing) public-service employment. There would be accusations that the government was creating make-work jobs, but the W.P.A. left many solid achievements in its wake. And the key point is that direct public employment can create a lot of jobs at relatively low cost. In a proposal to be released today, the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank, argues that spending $40 billion a year for three years on public-service employment would create a million jobs, which sounds about right.

...this would cost money, probably several hundred billion dollars, and raise the budget deficit in the short run. But this has to be weighed against the high cost of inaction in the face of a social and economic emergency...

Paul Krugman, March 2003, with narration by Niall Ferguson:

"My prediction is that politicians will eventually be tempted to resolve the [fiscal] crisis the way irresponsible governments usually do: by printing money, both to pay current bills and to inflate away debt. And as that temptation becomes obvious, interest rates will soar."

...A year and a half later [Krugman] was comparing the U.S. deficit with Argentina's (at a time when it was 4.5 percent of GDP). Has the economic situation really changed so drastically that now the same Krugman believes it was "deficits that saved us," and wants to see an even larger deficit next year? Perhaps...

...But it might just be that the party in power has changed.

Krugman is a laughingstock, with or without a Nobel Prize. Come to think of it, he fits in perfectly with fellow prize winners Al Gore and Yassar Arafat.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Boston Globe Climate Beclownment Spectacular

Oh, my heavens... my eyes are tearing up I'm laughing so hard. Hold on, I'm... gasping... for air. Stop... oh, damn, I can't breathe. Hold on a sec'.

Okay, I'm back. Take this headline from The Boston Globo Gym, please:

Boston faces deep risk from sea level rise

Brace yourself Boston: Sea level rise from climate change could jeopardize Hub assets worth $463 billion.

Pity these nearly bankrupt lard-asses can't bother to surf the inter-tubes like their readers. Some of the comments are priceless.

If this is based on Al Gore's "cooked" data, then there is nothing to worry about.

Get a clue Globo! The global warming thing's a hoax. Doesn't anyone at that rag read the papers?

Build Giant Sea walls like Denmark and London!

ClimateGate continues...let me guess, 50% tax on top of previously taxed income to help SAVE THE CITY FROM SINKING!!!

26 Inches in 20 years, uh-huh, ya right, based on what Empirical Data? I highly doubt the ocean has risen 26 Inches since the Pilgrims first landed in MA. More phoney-baloney Leftist Moondbat Pseudo-Science, another typical day for El Globo...

Yes! I'm getting waterfront property in Beacon Hill!

This would be interesting we didn't just learn that climate researchers have been engaged in massive fraud.

Wow- then all those overpriced condos really will be "underwater"!!!

Help us, Obama-wan Kenobi, you are our only hope!

We are not one with Planet.

Funny the Globe has not run a story about the global warming liars who have been caught trying to cover their rears.

When will the Globe do an article on ClimateGate? A report from the WWF is hardly newsworthy, if not a complete fabrication. The Maldives rising sealevels have turned out to be another hoax.

This just in: Boston also faces a huge threat from bigfoot. I would think that the massive fraud uncovered at the leading climate change think tank would be a higher news priority than this. Not that the news is slanted or anything....

So can someone explain to me what happened to the glacier that covered Boston 19,000 years ago? Was that global warming caused by man? It made a glacier retreat over most of New England and Canada. 26 inches huh? How thick was the ice that covered the same region?

I love it - funnier than the onion!!!!!! The World Wildlife Fund... oh man, too funny, really. Good stuff, guys!

Quick ! Somebody blame Bush !!

That's why we have boats right? Where is Dennis Quade when you need him?

We have choices to make:
A. We could all move inland.
B. We could build levies like New Orleans has now.
C. We could hire Moses to hold back the water.
D. We could all go back to the stone age, pre-fire.
E. We could forget that we read this article and go back to living normally.
Take your pick!

We need a topo map with the to-be-submerged areas marked for this to be useful information.

Does this mean we don't have to fund the Convention Center expansion?

This is horrible. I'm seeing scientific evidence of this already. I was at the coast in the morning, and by early afternoon the seas had risen quit a bit. But then later that night I saw they had receded. So I don't know what to think. Please Globe, or Al Gore, or some other neutral source of scientific data - tell me what to think.

It goes on and on and on. This really must be a parody. There's no other rational explanation.

Bombs and Dollars Ranks the Conservative Blogosphere

Mitchell at Bombs and Dollars has published his own ranking of the conservative blogosphere. Proud though it makes me, his methodology needs a bit of fine-tuning, as we turn up ahead of American Thinker, Campaign Spot, Dan Riehl, Gateway Pundit and a host of other big leaguers.

The picture at right is Mitch with the unsurpassed Michelle Malkin. I'd call her the current reigning Goddess of the Blogosphere, but the ACLU might take offense.

Biden's Motorcade Involved In (Another) Crash

The motorcade of Vice President "Slow" Joe Biden was involved in its second accident in recent weeks. A cab driver and two police officers assigned to Biden's security detail were hurt in the accident.

Little more than a week ago, Biden's motorcade killed a pedestrian in Washington, DC.

By my count, Biden has now killed or wounded four times the number of individuals that Dick Cheney hurt in his shotgun mishap.

In related news, The Daily Show, Late Night with David Letterman, Dana Milbank, Andrew Sullivan, Drink Progress, TPM Bloatwire, 528.com and TFatt were busy writing material mocking Sarah Palin.

Media Complicit in Hawking Health Reform Propaganda That Will 'Result in the Loss of Lives'

Yesterday the 'U.S. Preventative Services Task Force' issued new guidelines regarding the age at which women should begin having mammograms.

The task force claimed that most women in their forties don't need mammograms and should therefore start the exams beginnng at age 50.

The American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, however, both reject these new guidelines.

At the Brown Cancer Center, Dr. Lane Roland said if the recommendations are adopted by the public and physicians, it will result in the loss of lives... The government task force making the recommendations consisted of 16 government-funded physicians and scientists. None was an expert on breast cancer detection and prevention.

Linda Douglass, White House Health Reform communications director, decried objections to the task force guidelines. She stated, “This is a typical scare tactic designed to protect the health care status quo of rising costs, unaffordable coverage and unfair insurance company practices,” she said.

Yet, despite the rampant opposition to the new recommendations by admitted non-experts, more than 1,000 news outlets picked up the story.

If this were the only case of the media reporting pro-rationing tripe, it could be forgiven as an aberration. Put simply, this is only the latest in a long line of similar public relations efforts.

Drugs as good as stents for many heart patients: last year, MSNBC and other news outlets reported that angioplasties were likely overrated, claiming "there's more evidence drugs should be tried first and often are just as effective."

The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other groups.

Study: Pill as good as chemo for some patients, in December of last year, a new study claimed that a "cancer treatment that comes in a pill is as effective as the standard chemotherapy for some lung patients."

Generic hearts drugs are equivalent to brand-name counterparts: late last year, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that generic cardiac drugs were as effective as brand-name heart medications. The study closely followed the release of another study that demonstrated similar practices could be ineffective and unsafe.

Surgical masks are nearly as effective as high-end respirators: last month, a study claimed that surgical masks were nearly as effective as (high-end) N95 respirators in preventing the spread of flu among health care workers.

All coincidences? I think not.

Consider this the media's covering fire for ObamaCare's inevitable rationing protocols.

Exclusive Sneak Peak: CNN Poll Results on Palin's Prez Chances

Breaking news on a surprising CNN poll.

Apparently, CNN's poll of almost all Democrats believe Governor Sarah Palin is not qualified to save or create non-existent jobs; fail to make important military decisions; destroy the value of the dollar; spike unemployment; create massive new entitlement programs and enact oppressive new taxes on Americans.

Go figure.

Gun-Ho, Twilf, Bad News: Media's Long Knives Unsheathed on Palin

The long knives of the media have truly been unsheathed for Sarah Palin of late.

Exhibit A: demonstrating all the class and balance of its owner Al Gore, the failing "Current TV" network slimed the erstwhile Vice Presidential candidate with some genuinely nasty references.

Days after announcing another huge layoff, Al Gore's Current TV referred to former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as a "Gun-Ho" and a "TWILF."

These disgraceful, sexually-charged epithets were part of an attack on prominent conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, and came in the form of a cartoon ironically titled "The Stupid Virus"...

In the end, this was just a lot of conservative bashing in very bad taste, especially the shot of Palin's Twitter page and her astonishingly offensive screen name "Gun-Ho".

Given that Current TV's Nielsen ratings fall somewhere between airport radar and sonograms, this sort of attack is as feeble as it is distasteful.

And I'll patiently await the cries of protest from the National Organization of Women and other groups that claim to protect the fair treatment of women.

Exhibit B: The dying periodical Newsweek offered its own form of attack, helpfully informing the Republican Party that Palin is "bad news".

As for "bad news for everybody else," Palin is obviously "bad news" that people are hungry for. Palin’s book is going bonkers on the bestseller list and is proving to be one of the best stimulus programs the book industry has had in a good while — and Newsweek’s subscription rate is falling and they’re laying off employees by the dozen.

The only immediate “bad news” is for Newsweek — and when they do gratuitiously negative pieces on a figure who is looked up to by a demographic that spends a fortune on books… not to mention magazines, Newsweek’s death spiral makes all the more sense. This is why the mainstream newspaper business is dying too — you simply can’t dismiss a huge slice of the news consuming public with your bias without ultimately suffering economically.

Never mind that a woman -- who fought corruption both inside and outside her own party, managed a multi-billion-dollar oil deal, ran an entire state government and was suddenly thrust into the national spotlight -- became an overnight political sensation. Never mind that she attracts immense crowds wherever she goes.

She is despised by the Left for two reasons named Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric, who sandbagged Palin with interviews that were shocking in their naked attempts to humiliate the Governor.

Simply compare and contrast Gibson's interview questions for Barack Obama and those for Sarah Palin.

Gibson's Interview Questions for Obama:

• How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
• How does it feel to “win”?
• How does your family feel about your “winning”, breaking a glass ceiling?
• Who will be your VP?
• Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?
• Will you accept public finance?
• What issues is your campaign about?
• Will you visit Iraq?
• Will you debate McCain at a town hall?
• What did you think of your competitor’s [Clinton's] speech?
Gibson's Interview Questions for Palin:

• Do you have enough qualifications for the job you’re seeking?
• Specifically have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?
• Aren’t you conceited to be seeking this high level job?
• Questions on foreign policy...
• ...territorial integrity of Georgia
• ...allowing Georgia and Ukraine to be members of NATO
• ...NATO treaty
• ...Iranian nuclear threat
• ...what to do if Israel attacks Iran
• ...Al Qaeda motivations
• ...the Bush Doctrine
• ...attacking terrorists harbored by Pakistan
• ...Is America fighting a holy war? [misquoted Palin]

Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric both intentionally attacked Palin with questions designed to embarrass. Had Obama been queried with the same devious intentions, he'd have been reduced to the blubbering teleprompter-less soul we saw yesterday in Japan.

When confronted with the question of whether the U.S. did the right thing in bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, his response was "stumbling and ill-prepared." One need only watch the video to appreciate how pathetic his performance was, not to mention the fact that he -- once again -- refused to stick up for his own country.

It is clear that had Gibson and Couric attacked Obama with similar vigor, the Presidential candidate would have been reduced to the "Homina, homina, homina" filibuster he employs when his teleprompter takes its occasional cigarette break.

And here's something else to consider:

The fear and anxiety that Sarah Palin generates among the elitist snobs of the Left is truly something to behold. It reminds me of the insecurity and animosity they once reserved for the former Hollywood actor, Ronald Reagan.

Evidence Mounts Fort Hood Shooter Is Ordinary Mass Murderer

Dan from New York:

FBI: Religion, ideology furthest thing from the guy's mind.

FORT HOOD, Texas - As authorities dig deeper into the possible motives behind the Ft. Hood massacre, a picture is emerging of a garden-variety US soldier who found the conflict between his desire to serve his country and the natural fear of combat just too hard to reconcile, causing him to snap. Investigators are now discounting earlier, unconfirmed, reports of 85 eyewitnesses who said they heard Major Nidal Malik Hasan cry "Allahu Akbar!" before going on his shooting rampage, killing thirteen and wounding 30 more. They now believe Hasan, an atheist of Iranian-Jewish descent, was actually shouting "Oy Vey Halvah," and amid the ensuing panic and confusion the phrase was misinterpreted by scores of combat-ready soldiers. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow quotes the FBI agent in charge of the inquiry, Ahmed Faisal, as saying, "we are now confident that Hasan's faith played absolutely no ole in his state of mind leading up to this tragedy. End of subject." Off camera, Maddow, not realizing her mic was on, was heard telling colleague Chris Mathews, "see, what [the] hell did I tell you?"

Asked for his comments on the FBI's findings, President - wait for it - Barack Hussein Obama told reporters, "see, what [the] hell did I tell you?"

Someway, somehow, Karl Rove is to blame.

Correction: Massacre may be America's fault.

Photographic Proof that Dana Milbank Is, as Mark Levin Describes Him, "A Punk, a Liar and a Coward."

Constitutional attorney, bestselling author and hit radio show host Mark Levin certainly doesn't mince words. Alerted to Milbank's latest hit piece in The Washington Post, Levin called Milbank out as a propagandist of the first order.

The reason: out of literally tens of thousands of patriotic signs and shirts at Thursday's Capitol Hill protest, Milbank picked out a handful as supposedly representative of a crowd he described as "hateful and gruesome." An outraged Levin called Milbank a "punk, a liar and a coward" while challenging him to a debate on his show.

In the front of the protest, a sign showed President Obama in white coat, his face painted to look like the Joker. The sign, visible to the lawmakers as they looked into the cameras, carried a plea to "Stop Obamunism." A few steps farther was the guy holding a sign announcing "Obama takes his orders from the Rothchilds" [sic], accusing Obama of being part of a Jewish plot to introduce the antichrist.

But the best of Bachmann's recruits were a few rows into the crowd, holding aloft a pair of 5-by-8-foot banners proclaiming "National Socialist Healthcare, Dachau, Germany, 1945." Both banners showed close-up photographs of Holocaust victims, many of them children....

"Who knew a casual comment on TV could generate this?" Rep. Jeb Hensarling (Tex.) exulted as he stood in front of the Dachau banner.

Now, objecting to the health-care bill is one thing. But doesn't it send the wrong message for House Republicans to hold an event on the Capitol grounds full of hateful and gruesome words and images?

Here's a Nazi reference that Milbank might appreciate: I think of him as the Josef Goebbels of his age. He writes patent propaganda in service of the State. And I can prove it.

Bubba visited DC for the rally and wandered through the crowd for hours taking scores of photos. I created a montage -- click to zoom if you'd like read the dozens of visible messages -- from his collection. And I didn't spot a single "hateful" or "gruesome" message. Just highly p***ed off.

And Milbank's selective memory is appalling.

As has been copiously documented by ZombieTime and many others, the Leftist protests during the Bush administration were more than hateful and gruesome. They were just plain sick (and frequently pornographic). I created a similar montage using just a couple of Zombie's photo albums (click to zoom).

Dana Milbank, cowardly lying punk that he is, must have missed the hundreds of anti-Bush rallies and the thousands of truly despicable, pornographic and violent messages presented at those events.

Little wonder that the Washington Post's circulation is dropping faster than a hot dog into Michael Moore's gullet.

To make up for shortfall of viewers by avoiding Fox News, White House adds appearances on 'non-traditional' cable channels

Despite the fact that Fox News draws more viewers than CNN, MSNBC and Headlne News combined, the White House has announced its intent to boycott Fox for the next several months.

In order to make up for the viewer shortfall, the White House will vary its appearance schedule to include "non-traditional" cable outlets. Look for cameo appearances by the President on the following shows:

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW

AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL

CARTOON NETWORK

ANIMAL PLANET

JUDGE JUDY

BARACK AND KATE PLUS EIGHT

According to White House insiders, appearances on these channels should help make up for the viewer shortfall.

Nude Breast Exam Aired on DC TV News: Must Be Ratings Week

From all appearances, Tim has waaay too much time on his hands; he instantly alerted us to this breaking news story:

DC station airs demo of bare breast self-exams

WASHINGTON – The ABC affiliate here is airing a two-part [Tim: two-part -- get it??] series that takes a close — and unobscured — look at breast self-exams. The series is airing during the fall "sweeps" period critical for a TV station's ad revenue, prompting concern by a parental watchdog group. But WJLA insists it's not just a naked attempt to boost the ratings.

The two segments include clinical demonstrations of self-exams, and the breasts of the two volunteers are not blurred. They were to air during the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts Thursday and Friday.

WJLA officials said the segments are providing an important service because many women don't know how to properly check their breasts...

In the interest of decorum, I won't relay Tim's advice for females in his neighborhood.

What to do when they're expecting (a decision on the troops)

Complain to The New York Times about all the attention and criticism paid to your "date night" on Broadway.

Collect a Nobel Peace Prize for actions and accomplishments unknown.

Fly to Copenhagen to lobby for the Olympics which, by the way, worked as well as the Stimulus package.

Play 24 rounds of golf; by comparison President George W. Bush, mocked mercilessly by the media for the same 'offense', played a third as much golf as 0.

Attend 23 fundraisers in nine months; by comparison, W. attended 6 fundraisers during his first year in office.

Given thirty-plus speeches pressing for socialized medicine... and I think that's understating things.

Name disgraceful moonbat Alan 'K Street Whore' Grayson "an outstanding member of Congress".

Very, very important things to do. Much more important than making a decision regarding our men and women in combat.

The Bust Out

A scene in Martin Scorsese's classic film Goodfellas offers a classic definition of a "bust out". The set up: mobsters Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Peschi) have acquired a share in a nightclub through their loansharking operation.

Their gang uses the joint as a clearinghouse for its black-market operations: cigarettes, liquor, food and clothing are acquired on credit -- ostensibly for the bar -- and then sold at 100% profit margins. Hill describes the scene:

As soon as the deliveries are made in the front door, you move the stuff out the back and sell it at a discount. You take a two hundred dollar case of booze and sell it for a hundred. It doesn't matter. It's all profit.

Sonny, the club's titular owner, is legally on the hook for all of the purchases.

Unable to make payments, the gang executes the traditional "bust out".

And, finally, when there's nothing left, when you can't borrow another buck from the bank or buy another case of booze, you bust the joint out.

Which means: set the place on fire and file a claim for the insurance money that covers the hollowed-out shell.

The twin pillars of the bust out: The legal owner of the business has all of the criminal responsibility while the vendors who offered goods on credit are stuck paying the tab.

There are many laws that explicitly prohibit this sort of activity: racketeering laws; laws against fraud; bankruptcy fraud; concealment of theft using bankruptcy; etc.

Yet this is precisely what has happened to the entire U.S. economy.

AIG was the infamous insurance conglomerate that sold every type of insurance product imaginable, most notably insurance on financial instruments. These included the ill-fated credit default swaps (CDS), the unregulated insurance contracts that nuked AIG last year.

Years before, Warren Buffett had called CDS products "weapons of mass financial destruction." Buffett presumably envisioned a scenario that AIG's modelers never did: a severe downturn in the market.

Yet AIG kept producing CDS contract after CDS contract, carefully greasing palms to ensure that the insurance products would never be categorized as such to ensure a complete lack of regulatory oversight.

When the S.S. AIG-cum-Titanic went down, with its toxic swaps polluting every sector of the financial system, the U.S. government was forced to step in. While the investment bankers at Goldman and other well-connected institutions were made whole, the U.S. taxpayer remains on the hook. Or rather, the taxpayers' children and grandchildren. Consider it a form of economic indentured servitude for subsequent generations.

Maurice "Ace" Greenberg ran AIG before it imploded. Ace led AIG's dramatic expansion of its CDS business. Ace left a handful of months before the calamitous collapse having made hundreds of millions of dollars.

Ace is in no legal jeopardy whatsoever.

As the head of AIG, wouldn't Ace be able to assess how risky its products were? Of course he would. By late 2005, AIG began to brag that it had started to extricate itself from the CDS business. Too late, it turned out. And too siloed, as other AIG business units never got the memo.

Did Ace successfully execute a bust out? It sure looks that way.

Now Ace is setting up a new shop, reportedly cherry-picking all of AIG's best people, starting up with a clean balance sheet, unencumbered by those pesky taxpayer IOUs and looking to create a brand new company.

By setting up a new shop, Mr. Greenberg is basically cloning AIG, while leaving behind the empty bankrupt shell of AIG to the hands of the suckers who bailed it out — namely, the government, and ultimately, the people. In other words, Mr. Greenberg will wind up with a new AIG sans the insolvency, sans the government oversight (minimal though it is), sans the "bad reputation" of AIG, and on top of that, he will keep all the money he made off the CDS that AIG underwrote.

It could even happen that, if and when this new Cloned-AIG goes broke again on credit default swaps or some other clever bit of financial engineering, Mr. Greenberg will again leave it to its fate just before it bankrupts. After all, life is a wheel, endlessly repeating...

Why isn't the government going after these banksters? Where are the prosecutions? Why isn't the media screaming bloody murder?

What's preventing the next bust out?
