Ted Cruz needs an issue if he wants to win – and this is it

By Craig Shirley

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) would be wise to avoid the mistake Ronald Reagan made early in his 1976 insurgent campaign to supplant President Gerald Ford as the Republican presidential nominee. Cruz needs a crystallizing justification — a signature issue.

Reagan only found one mid-way through his 1976 race, but he was able to use it to carry him to victory in 1980. Reagan’s populist call to hold on to the Panama Canal — “We built it! We paid for it! It’s ours! And we’re gonna keep it!” — resounded with voters in 1976. Cruz has an equally populist issue that could prove as successful: campaigning against the U.S. Supreme Court’s eminent-domain ruling.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: The Donald Trump Word Search!

Now that Donald Trump has pulled out of tomorrow's Fox News debate, the pundits are speculating non-stop as to what it means.

There's a camp asserting that it's a slap in the face to Iowa's voters. Another group says it demonstrates Mr. Trump's odd and erratic behavior.

Others say it's a canny move designed to avoid getting schooled by Ted Cruz again in a debate.

Given all of that, summer intern Biff Spackle created a helpful word search puzzle using some of Mr. Trump's key traits:

WE GOT A BLEEDER! Donald Trump Bails out of GOP Debate, Fearing Questions From... Megyn Kelly

I find it somewhat odd that a man who fancies himself a master negotiator ready to face the world's toughest dictators is so fearful of questions posed by Fox anchor Megyn Kelly that he has bailed out of the final Republican debate.

...Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said on Tuesday night that he is backing out of Thursday's primary debate in Des Moines, Iowa, which will be broadcast by Fox News Channel.

Trump had been publicly mulling the move for a few days, complaining that Fox News host Megyn Kelly, one of three moderators for the event, is biased against him...

PRO-LIFE WOMEN SOUND THE ALARM: Donald Trump is Unacceptable

Pro-life women leaders from Iowa as well as the heads of national pro-life organizations are speaking out and urging Republican caucus-goers and voters to support anyone but Donald Trump. The following letter will be sent out to pro-life Iowans today.

Dear Iowans,

As pro-life women leaders from Iowa and across the nation, we urge Republican caucus-goers and voters to support anyone but Donald Trump. On the issue of defending unborn children and protecting women from the violence of abortion, Mr. Trump cannot be trusted and there is, thankfully, an abundance of alternative candidates with proven records of pro-life leadership whom pro-life voters can support. We have come to this conclusion after having listened patiently to numerous debates and news reports, but most importantly to Donald Trump’s own words.

The next president will be responsible for as many as four nominations to the Supreme Court.

"I'M GOING TO DO A LOT OF THINGS": Trump Vows to Use Obama-Style Executive Actions to Bypass Congress

By Fred Lucas

Some conservatives are concerned over Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump’s vow to take the same path of bypassing Congress as President Barack Obama – even though the billionaire said his actions would be “much better” than Obama’s and done for “the right things.”

“Does Mr. Trump enjoy power? Is he more likely to prefer limited and constitutional or unlimited and unconstitutional power? Where is he likely to fall on that scale? I tend to think it’s with the maximum possible exercise of power,” Colin Hanna, president of the conservative public policy group Let Freedom Ring USA, told TheBlaze.

Trump, as president, might well use the executive powers to advance conservative causes, Hanna added, but he said there is more at stake.

TRUMP: "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters"

By Sara Noble

There is nothing Trump can say or do to lose this momentum in the GOP primary. Anyone who attacks Trump gets pummeled.

Donald Trump said Saturday that he could shoot someone and wouldn’t lose voters.

“I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters,” Trump said at a campaign rally.

FLASHBACK AUGUST 2015: "Sarah Palin Endorses Donald Trump After He Promises To Give Her Power, Relevancy"

Today's report that Sarah Palin has endorsed Donald Trump appears to be somewhat dated.

On August 14th of last year, Kit O'Connell reported that Palin had endorsed Trump "[after he] recently promised to give ... Palin a Cabinet-level position in his administration."

HONEST DON: "Trump Lies About 2000 Call for Assault Weapons Ban" --Robert Farago

The, eh, more passionate Trump supporters are alive and well and living in the comments section of this blog, buzzing with conspiracy theories and stories of Cruz's changes in policy positions. That's fine. As I've said countless times before, I would support Donald Trump in the general against a Democrat, because I'd support Dennis Rodman or Porky Pig against a Democrat.

With that said, any policy position Ted Cruz has ever altered pales in comparison with Mr. Trump's earlier support of assault weapons bans, extended waiting periods to purchase firearms, partial-birth abortions, and gay marriage. Trump's acolytes insist that the year 2000 was a very long time ago. So let's ignore the fact that Trump endorsed an open Communist -- Bill DeBlasio -- for mayor of New York in 2013, stating that he's a "smart guy" who will be "a good mayor". No, let's skip that point for the moment.

Instead, let's reflect upon Mr. Trump's more recent willingness to openly lie to the firearms media about his past support for restrictions on the Second Amendment. As The Truth About Guns' Robert Farago noted a few months ago:

GRAVITAS: Can Mr. Trump’s Supporters Help Me Understand His 24-hour, 180˚ Turnabout Over the Weekend?

After months of complimenting his rival for the GOP nomination, Senator Ted Cruz, Donald Trump engaged in a weekend of diatribes, insults and name-calling that was truly and spectacularly bizarre:

If you are like most ordinary Americans, you probably spent the weekend watching the NFL playoffs, or spending time with your family, or trying to avoid the freezing cold that gripped most of the country. You know, anything other than watching the Democrats “debate” or the political nonsense on Twitter and the cable shows.

Which is regrettable, because people who were paying attention finally got to see what The Donald is like...

Return to Dachau

By Baron Bodissey

After seventy years, a camp has been opened again at Dachau.

But it’s not the kind of camp that was there in 1943. No, not at all.

Now the German staff wait on the Untermenschen who have been welcomed into Germany. They cater to their every need and never punish them, no matter the seriousness of the crime. Now the residents of the camp can spend their time watching TV, and may eat as many meals as they want. Now the guards at the camp are required to act as the servants of the “refugees”.

THE ULTIMATE BIRTHER BIBLE: Because Trump "is unable to engage Cruz on matters of actual substance"

Who are the Constitutional scholars and legal experts that assert, in no uncertain terms, that Ted Cruz (the son of an American citizen) is eligible to run for President?

I mean, besides the legal experts Donald Trump consulted months ago before the polls tightened and he changed his tune.

For starters:

CRUZ TAKES THE HIGH ROAD: Trump Booed in South Carolina After Caustic Insults of Texas Senator

By Terresa Monroe-Hamilton

Donald Trump had a literal meltdown on Twitter issuing a bizarre series of personal insults, screeds, and disjointed attacks on Ted Cruz. I guess the honeymoon is over. Too bad, they would have gone well together. Ted Cruz mocked him for it. His retort was epic:

UNEXPECTEDLY: GOPe Elites Sucking Up to Donald Trump In Last-Ditch Effort to Stop Ted Cruz

I like Donald Trump and would support him for president if he were the nominee. Even with another northeastern liberal Republican -- Scott Brown, who Trump has floated as a VP candidate -- on the ticket.

But my clear favorite is Ted Cruz, because he's the one Constitutional conservative who actually goes to war for what he believes. In 2013, he single handedly shut down the government in an effort to defund Obamacare (a promise that Mitch McConnell made to voters in Kentucky that he quickly abandoned). He called out his own party's leader on the Senate floor for lying to conservatives. He's meant what he's said and he's said what he meant, something precious few politicians ever do.

What does Donald Trump actually stand for? What do we call the Trump movement? Does it have successors as Cruz appears to be to Reagan?

Given a choice between Cruz and Trump, it would appear the GOP establishment has figured it can work with the Donald. So says the Washington Post and many others:

LEVIN: Friendly advice, Donald, and I do mean friendly...

Earlier today, Mark Levin posted a collegial bit of guidance for Donald Trump, who has ratcheted up an increasingly hysterical grab-bag of attacks on his only real competitor for the GOP nomination, Ted Cruz. And said attacks are simply smears like "birtherism", not policy-based differences.

Attorney, author, and radio host Mark R. Levin
Either cut the crap - your accusations this morning that Cruz is Canadian, a criminal, owned by big banks, etc. ("Trump Tees Off: Cruz A ‘Canadian’ Who Goldman Sachs, Citi Bank ‘Owns’") - or you will lose lots and lots of conservatives.

Save the liberal New York City bully tactics for the New York City liberals. Put down your computer keyboard for a few hours, think before you tweet, and collect yourself. You're not politically invincible, regardless of the polls and media.

I am already hearing more and more people getting fed up with the low road you're taking against Cruz, which has obviously intensified this morning.

You don't need to attack his honor or attempt to smear his reputation. You can leave that to Mitch McConnell and the New York Times.

Engage on real and substantive issues that matter to the country. Like I said, my friendly advice.

Trump's increasingly anxious rhetoric is ironic given his troubling shifts in position as the race nears its conclusion.

Remember when Donald Trump supported an assault weapons ban and then lied to AmmoLand about it?

WE MUST GIVE PROPS TO DONALD TRUMP: But We Must Also Discount Double-Check His Record

By the Editors of the Conservative Review

It is hard not to feel protective over Donald Trump while the political classes are seething and scornful.

They are unacquainted with such powerlessness. Control was never supposed to stray this far from their grasp. And their rage, manifested in every hapless attack on Trump and his supporters, actually seems to be improving the likelihood of that outcome they fear most of all.

KA-FREAKING-BOOM: Simply Outstanding Interview With Ted Cruz

I cherry-picked some snippets from Hugh Hewitt's great interview with Ted Cruz on Barack Obama's foreign policy, the Trumpster, and the 9/11 Truther-Birthers:

HH: On the night of the State of the Union, drama developing today as two Navy boats have ten American sailors in the custody of, you got it, the Iranians... What do you think the President should say about these Iranians and these sailors tonight?

TRUMP MOVES TO THE CENTER: I Support Amnesty

By Marc A. Thiessen

Trump’s supporters loved his promise this week to create a “deportation force” to remove all 11 million illegal immigrants living in America, and his repeated declaration that everyone here illegally will “have to go.”

But his supporters tend to overlook is his other promise — repeated in a recent debate — that under his immigration plan “they will come back.”

That’s right. Under Trump’s immigration plan almost all of 11 million illegal aliens (save for a small minority with criminal records) will get to return and get permanent legal status to stay here in America.

Trump supports amnesty.

THE GAMBLE: Obama, Trump and Executive Power

By Colin A. Hanna

There he goes again. President Obama is shamelessly, cynically and hypocritically exploiting a mass shooting to advance his gun control agenda. The executive actions he proposed recently would have had no preventive impact whatsoever on the San Bernardino incident had they been in place a month ago, yet he is skillfully exploiting that tragedy to reframe the debate. He is trying to shift our national focus away from a rigorous examination of what motivates mass shooters, which is where it should be, to support for a new set of restrictions on gun ownership and expansions of background checks, under the banner of “common sense.”

WHAT THEY’RE HIDING FROM YOU: Trump 'Silent Protester' Is a Supporter Of Islamic Terrorism

By Mac Slavo

There have been widespread calls for Presidential front runner Donald Trump to issue an apology to Rose Hamid. You’ll recall that Hamid was the woman who silently protested a Trump campaign stop before being ejected from the event by security.

But as has often been the case with political plants at Republican events, the public was only given part of the story.
