Re: Will the next 'Underwear Bomber' succeed?
Dear Professor Dershowitz:
Great post this week on your JPost blog, big guy. I counted four "we must," two "there must," one "we should" and zero "Obama." Darn, Al, you're a f***ing Harvard law professor and you still don't know who Janet Napolitano works for!
This caught my eye too: "Imagine what the reaction would have been if hundreds of Detroit-bound passengers had been murdered!" Not that hard to do, Al. A Republican Congress in 2011 and a one-way ticket to Chicago for BHO in 2013.
Then you wrote, "That is what the reaction should now be to this near-catastrophe."
Finally, Dersh, something we agree on.

RED ALERT: WaPo Op-Ed Columnist Paid to Promote ObamaCare
On 28 December 2009, The Washington Post published a staunch defense of government-run health care written by an MIT economics professor named Jonathan Gruber. The gist of Gruber's op-ed: the tax on 'Cadillac' health care plan isn't really a tax -- it's simply "a plan to finance real health reform":...The Senate assessment on high-cost insurance plans doesn't walk like a tax or talk like a tax -- because it is not a tax. It is an innovative way of financing the health reform we so desperately need.
What the WaPo failed to disclose is that Gruber was awarded a 'sole source' contract by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The contract is called "Technical Assistance in Evaluating Options for National Healthcare Reform", which would explain Gruber's strenuous language.
Today Ben Smith of Politico engaged Gruber in the following Q&A:
"[D]on’t you think it’s rather, um, dubious that the guy evaluating the heath care reform–for $300,000–is also the package’s single biggest champion? And no one has been transparent about this contract?"......at no time have I publicly advocated a position that I did not firmly believe - indeed, I have been completely consistent with my academic track record... Every position I have advocated on this topic is completely consistent with these reports.
In short, Gruber was battling critics of Obamacare in friendly media outlets like The Washington Post without any disclosure of his conflicts-of-interest.
...while he was being paid to provide his services to HHS, he was also fending off health care reform critics in the media. Gruber was one of the prominent analysts to rebut an insurance industry report from PricewaterhouseCoopers in October saying premiums would shoot up if a health care bill passes. And he has recently written columns defending specific provisions in the House and Senate bills, particularly the "Cadillac tax" on high-cost insurance plans...But a column in The Washington Post on the Cadillac tax just a few days later did not disclose his relationship with the administration. Gruber was listed merely as a "professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology."
Government documents explaining the terms of his contract say that he was "uniquely positioned" for providing analysis for the health department's assistant secretary for planning and evaluation, describing him as a "recognized expert in health policy in economics."
That's what we call an infomercial, kids.
These are the depths to which "mainstream newspapers" like WaPo have been reduced.
While you're reading, can I interest you in some ShamWow™?
By their own calculations, Democrats risking 25 million American lives
Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-Lame Duck) and President Barack Obama like to claim that 14,000 U.S. citizens lose their health care insurance each and every day.
On a rare Saturday session of the Senate in November of 2009, Senator Judd Gregg (R-NV) called out the fraud inherent to the Democrat health care bill.
Bernard Madoff would be proud.
The question any rational person would ask is this: if health care reform is so urgent that 14,000 people a day are risking death for lack of health insurance, why would Democrats wait five years to begin the program, thereby putting 25 million Americans at risk?
Oh -- I can answer that question. Because they lie. Incessantly, continually and habitually. They lie about everyone and everything. Because if they told the truth, they could no more win public office than Michael Moore could endorse SlimFast.
On a rare Saturday session of the Senate in November of 2009, Senator Judd Gregg (R-NV) called out the fraud inherent to the Democrat health care bill.[Democrats] continue to claim this bill costs about $800 billion... [but] that is a totally dishonest number... The way that number was arrived at was that they don’t start spending money on this bill until the fourth or the fifth year. They couldn’t get the score they wanted from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), so they changed the starting point. They moved back another year in the ten-year cycle. They went from four years to five years as to the starting point of most of the spending in this bill...What they don’t tell the American people is they’re not spending anything in the first four or five years of the bill... They do cut Medicare throughout the ten-year period. But they don’t spend the money. They don’t start the spending programs until the year 2014, when this bill is fully phased in, when all these new programs, these massive expansion of entitlements are created, these brand-new entitlements. When all this new spending occurs, this bill will cost $2.5 trillion over that ten-year period.
Bernard Madoff would be proud.

Maybe I'll watch the State of the Union address on C-SPAN
Candidate Barack Obama promised complete transparency into the health care debates at least eight times and made it a centerpiece of his campaign. In recent days, C-SPAN management vocally endorsed the concept of televised negotiations... to no avail.
In reality, a mini-Politburo consisting of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Rahm Emanuel are redesigning one-sixth of the United States economy in secret and behind locked doors.
Given Barack Obama's egregious lies during the campaign, I'd encourage you to forego the State of the Union address. Or, if determined to watch it, just remember that every statement he utters possesses all the accuracy of his C-SPAN promises.
A live polygraph feed during the State of the Union would be entertaining indeed.
"The C-SPAN networks will commit the necessary resources to covering all of these sessions LIVE and in their entirety," Lamb wrote. "We will also, as we willingly do each day, provide C-SPAN’s multi-camera coverage to any interested member of the Capitol Hill broadcast pool."Lamb reminded the leaders that "President Obama, Senate and House leaders, many of your rank-and-file members, and the nation’s editorial pages have all talked about the value of transparent discussions on reforming the nation’s health care system. Now that the process moves to the critical stage of reconciliation between the Chambers, we respectfully request that you allow the public full access, through television, to legislation that will affect the lives of every single American."
Specifically, then-Sen. Obama said on the campaign trail that "we'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so the people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents and who is making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies."

QOTD by Mark Steyn: "An Irish reader writes:
Re your post in The Corner, "Who Needs Terrorists?" about the explosives put in the bag of a traveller from Poprad-Tatry to Dublin, you might be amused to note that the Slovak airport informed Dublin airport about it by TELEX. Who still uses telexes? No wonder the message sat there unread and unloved, not doubt in some dusty broom cupboard, for three long days before anyone read it.
I believe Telex is reserved for Code Orange alerts. If it had been merely a Code Yellow alert, it would have been sent by steam packet via the Cape of Good Hope.
Elsewhere in travel news, relax. Homeland-security officials were right on top of that Pantybomber situation:
U.S. border security officials learned of the alleged extremist links of the suspect in the Christmas Day jetliner bombing attempt as he was airborne from Amsterdam to Detroit and had decided to question him when he landed, officials disclosed Wednesday.
Given that he was planning to land in 4 million pieces over the greater Detroit metropolitan area, that's a lot of manpower. I wonder if the Obama administration understands quite how stupid they sound to the rest of the world."

The Federal Reserve's missive to banks (Advisory on Interest Rate Risk Management, PDF, hat tip: Tyler Durden) is a tad ominous:
Regulators warn that interest rate changes could be sudden and violent.
Coincidentally, the 4 percent hike theme echoes this week's statement by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City's President Thomas M. Hoenig:
The era of hundred billion-dollar wealth transfers -- stealing from taxpayers to hand to Wall Street's crony capitalists -- is rapidly drawing to a close. And with it, the pump priming the equity markets is poised to run dry.
The financial regulators are issuing this advisory to remind institutions of supervisory expectations regarding sound practices for managing interest rate risk (IRR). In the current environment of historically low short-term interest rates, it is important for institutions to have robust processes for measuring and, where necessary, mitigating their exposure to potential increases in interest rates.
Regulators warn that interest rate changes could be sudden and violent.
Lower rates helped lead to record quarterly profits at large banks such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co.“This is a reminder that that source of profits isn’t permanently locked in,” said Vincent Reinhart, a former Fed monetary-affairs director who is now a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. “Large changes in rates are possible, and it isn’t just what the Fed does, it’s how markets react to what the Fed starts doing.”
The regulators told banks to run stress tests with scenarios including “instantaneous and significant changes” in rates and “substantial changes in rates over time,” including shifts of as much as 4 percentage points.
Coincidentally, the 4 percent hike theme echoes this week's statement by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City's President Thomas M. Hoenig:
The Federal Reserve must curtail its emergency credit and financial market support programs, raise the federal funds rate target from zero back to a more normal level, probably between 3.5 and 4.5 percent, and restore its balance sheet to pre-crisis size and configuration...
...Maintaining excessively low interest rates for a lengthy period runs the risk of creating new kinds of asset misallocations, more volatile and higher long-run inflation, and more unemployment -- not today, perhaps, but in the medium and longer run.
The era of hundred billion-dollar wealth transfers -- stealing from taxpayers to hand to Wall Street's crony capitalists -- is rapidly drawing to a close. And with it, the pump priming the equity markets is poised to run dry.

Janet Napolitano rivals Janet Reno for sheer, unmitigated incompetence. In today's press conference, our crack Director of Homeland Security teleprompted her way through missives like:I think, following up on that, not just the determination of Al Qaida and Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, but the tactic of using an individual to foment an attack, as opposed to a large conspiracy or a multi-person conspiracy, such as we saw on 9/11, that is something that affects intelligence.
And:
...In [Holland], his name did not appear on any terrorist screening watch list, and so nothing pinged to keep him off of the plane.
While in the air, customs in Detroit has access to the entire TIDE database. And as we all now all know, that's the -- the large mega-database. It has 500,000-plus names in it, and they knew he had a ping there, and so they were ready when he landed in Detroit to question him about that -- that ping against the TIDE database...
...But the terrorist watch list -- but the terrorist watch list -- the terrorist screening watch list did not have his name on it.
Al Qaeda must be trembling in fear having realized that the vast intellects of Janet Napolitano and Barack Obama stand arrayed between them and martyrdom.

Tampa Bay Online relays an AP report regarding an aborted flight to Detroit.
I suspect Militant Quakers are behind this incident. And possibly Dick Cheney.
An airline passenger who yelled "I want to kill all the Jews" on a Detroit-bound plane was arrested on disorderly conduct and other charges, but authorities said Thursday the incident didn't appear terrorism-related.Mansor Mohammad Asad, 43, of Toledo, Ohio, was arrested Wednesday night after a taxiing Northwest Airlines flight returned to a gate at Miami International Airport, Miami-Dade police said. After a confrontation with officers, Asad was charged with threats against a public servant, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer without violence.
...The disturbance came the same day as military jets escorted a commercial jetliner bound for Hawaii back to the Portland, Ore., airport because of a disruptive passenger...
...Witnesses told investigators who boarded the plane that Asad was loud, disruptive and claimed to be Palestinian. His son said he was an American citizen of Palestinian descent.
Officers didn't find any weapons or explosives on Asad, who police said was agitated and aggressive at times, according to an arrest affidavit. Authorities used a stun gun to subdue Asad on the jet bridge after he charged at an officer with fists clenched. He also chanted in a foreign language and threatened officers during a search.
I suspect Militant Quakers are behind this incident. And possibly Dick Cheney.

A Public Service Message From Governor Jerkinator
Despite owah twenty billion dollah budget deficit, I am pwoud to be a Cally For Neyan.
Because we can't lay off owah hundreds of thousands of public sectah union employees, I must ask President Obama for help.
I call for the federal government to give us twenty billion moah dollahs.
You people in Texas and Nebraska and Floreeda, I'm sure you'll understand...
Give us your f*****g money.Undermining the Electoral Process, Chapter 8,622 : 9th Circuit Rules Voting Ban for Felons Racially Biased
Democrats defend and implicitly support ACORN's massive voter registration fraud. They fail to deter voter intimidation by the New Black Panther Party. They push incessantly for universal voter registration and amnesty for illegal aliens. And now -- felons are on the cusp of gaining the right to vote in Washington thanks to activist Democrat judges.
The modern Democrat Party is a disgrace -- and it must be stopped in 2010, before it's too late.
Hat tip: Steven G.
The New York Times reports that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday held that a Washington state law barring incarcerated felons from voting violates the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965 because it disproportionately affects minorities...The three-judge panel split in overturning the district judge’s 2000 ruling dismissing a lawsuit filed by a former prison inmate, and found that disparities in the state’s justice system “cannot be explained in race-neutral ways.” Of the 18,000 felons currently incarcerated by the state, over 37 percent are minorities; of that group, African-Americans make up the largest subsection at nearly 20 percent. The plaintiffs claimed that the Washington felon disenfranchisement law is illegal because it dilutes the minorities’ electoral strength due to their larger percentage among the prison population...
Dissenting 9th Circuit Judge Margaret McKeown wrote that the 1st, 2nd, and 11th Circuit courts have rejected VRA challenges to felon disenfranchisement laws, which many states have enacted in various iterations nationwide. The state Attorney General’s office hasn’t said whether they will seek a ruling by the full circuit court or appeal directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The modern Democrat Party is a disgrace -- and it must be stopped in 2010, before it's too late.

Hunch.com: Proof that even MIT students can be imbeciles
I enjoy checking out new web applications, especially ones that purport to save time for visitors. Such was my mindset I when I surfed to Hunch.com (no link, for reasons that will soon become obvious). A text ad led me to the site with an offer along the lines of "Find the blogs that match your preferences". And the clean, friendly interface promised just that, listing a series of blogs and asking me to offer a thumbs up or thumbs down on each.
Some of the blogs also had "insider" advice to help guide my selections -- nonsensical, it would seem, if Hunch were really trying to simply gather my unbiased opinions and then render a judgment.
I think I detected a subtle pattern with respect to the insider advice. See if you pick it up:

Oxymoronic: a "preferences" site that railroads its views into your consciousness. That would be Hunch.com. I gotta hunch it ain't gonna be too successful.
Oh, and if you Hunch guys happen to stop by, my response to your Statist views is briefly stated here. Put down the Python manual for a few hours and pick up a copy of the Constitution.

Dan from New York:
Dan, look on the bright side: it's only $100 to $150 million per terrorist.
And President Obama insists this effort will greatly improve our image with the Arab street. That's why Iran has given up its quest for nuclear warheads, Hamas has stopped rocketing Israel, Syria has quit its pursuit of WMDs, and Al Qaeda has completely ceased its efforts to destroy airliners mid-flight.
