And Saul Alinsky laughed: Economy still in freefall

Democrats were relieved to finally locate accurate 'hockey-stick' graphs -- until they discovered that the charts represented mortgage defaults.

Freddie Mac reported that the rate of serious delinquencies - at least 90 days behind - for conventional loans in its single-family guarantee business increased to 3.87% in December 2009, up from 3.72% in November - and up from 1.72% in December 2008...

But maybe Fannie Mae is okay...

Or not.

Fannie Mae reported today that the rate of serious delinquencies - at least 90 days behind - for conventional loans in its single-family guarantee business increased to 5.29% in November, up from 4.98% in October - and up from 2.13% in November 2008 ... it is important to note these stats do include Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) loans in trial modifications.

Gee, Mr. Lenin, isn't central planning great?

Suddenly I feel like Neo from The Matrix.

Well, this is certainly different [BMW]

BMW's new supercar appears destined for production:

...BMW is reportedly planning for a model run of between 5,000 and 10,000 units in 2013... [and] ...BMW has no plans to ditch the radical plug-in hybrid powertrain, which put out 356 horsepower and a stonkin' 590 pound-feet of torque in the concept. That means we'll get something similar to the turbocharged three-cylinder diesel range extender and twin electric motors powered by a lithium polymer battery pack that was featured in Frankfurt. Sounds great so far, and BMW claims the performance will be even better than the 4.8-second 0 to 60 run quoted for the concept.

Naturally, some of the Vision's more outlandish exterior bits will go the way of the Dodo, but IL reports BMW's target of weight is still under 3,000 pounds, meaning that high-tech composites and construction techniques are a veritable lock. Price for this next-gen eco-friendly supercar? Nothing announced – but if you have to ask... well, you know the rest.

Another hybrid supercar: this is getting almost passe.

One of the best marksmen in the FBI was passing through a small town.

Everywhere he saw evidence of the most amazing shooting. On trees, on walls, and on fences there were numerous bull's-eyes with the bullet hole in dead center.

The FBI agent asked one of the townspeople if he could meet the person responsible for this wonderful marksmanship. No problem. The marksman turned out to also be the town drunk.

"This is the best marksmanship I have ever seen," said the agent to the man. "How in the world do you do it?"

"Nothing to it," said the wobbling man. "I shoot first and draw the circles afterward."

The Obama Recovery Continues: More Than a Dozen Banks Seized by the FDIC in January Alone

140 banks were shuttered by the FDIC in 2009. Thanks to the Obamaconomy, the U.S. is on track for a double-digit increase in failed institutions. Based upon January's results, at least 156 banks will fail in 2010.

Regulators have shut down two banks in Georgia, and one each in Florida and Minnesota, boosting to 13 the number of bank failures so far in 2010, following 140 closures last year in the punishing economic climate.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. on Friday took over the four: First National Bank of Georgia... Community Bank and Trust of Cornelia, Ga.... Florida Community Bank of Immokalee, Fla.... and Marshall Bank of Hallock, Minn.

It would seem these banks never received the memo that President Obama has saved or created over four hundred quadrillion jobs since his historic election.

Remember the Limbo song that asks "how low can you go?" Prediction you can take to the bank: by 2012 we're going to find out.

Obama v. the Supremes

Alito wins the oral, and factual, argument.

In the case of Barack Obama v. Supreme Court of the United States, that was some oral argument on Wednesday night. With the Justices arrayed a few feet in front of him in the House chamber, President Obama blistered their recent decision defending free political speech for corporations and unions. As Democrats in Congress and Cabinet members rose and applauded around them, the Justices sat stern-faced, save for Samuel Alito, who was seen shaking his head and mouthing the words "Not true."

Bravo, Justice Alito.

We're not among those who think the Supreme Court is above criticism. Especially in recent decades as the judiciary has become more political, and has encroached on the powers of Congress and the executive, politicians in the other branches have an obligation to defend their powers. Mr. Obama may have exhibited bad manners in sandbagging the Justices without warning on national TV, but he has every right to disagree with their rulings.

But could a graduate of Harvard Law School at least get his facts right? "Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections," Mr. Obama averred. "Well, I don't think American elections should be bankrolled by America's most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities."

Let's unpack the falsehoods. The Court didn't reverse "a century of law," but merely two more recent precedents, one from 1990 and part of another from 2003. Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce in 1990 had set the Court in a markedly new direction in limiting independent corporate campaign expenditures. This is the outlier case that needed to be overturned.

Mr. Obama is also a sudden convert to stare decisis. Does he now believe that all Court precedents of a certain duration are sacrosanct, such as Plessy v. Ferguson (separate but equal, 1896), which was overturned by Brown v. Board (1954)? Or Bowers v. Hardwick (a ban on sodomy, 1986), which was overturned by Lawrence v. Texas (2003)?

The President's claim about "foreign entities" bankrolling U.S. political campaigns is also false, since the Court did not overrule laws limiting such contributions. His use of "foreign" was a conscious attempt to inflame public and Congressional opinion against the Court. Coming from a President who fancies himself a citizen of the world, and who has gone so far as foreswear American exceptionalism, this leap into talk-show nativism is certainly illuminating. What will they think of that one in the cafes of Berlin?

Desperate Presidents do desperate things, and Mr. Obama's riff against the Supremes reveals a President who — let us try to follow Mr. Obama's admonition about changing the "tone" of our politics — lacks grace under pressure.

Was it just my imagination or did the President appear angry and upset during the State of the Union? As if he wanted to use a cattle-prod on the American citizenry to help them understand? That what he's trying to do is good for them... and that he knows best?

Problem is -- the American form of government is not well-suited for a Chavez wannabe.

SOTU Aftershock: Dems Caught Between Obama and Deep Blue Sea

Dan from New York:

Obama urges nervous Dems to fight for his agenda

Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Caught between disgruntled voters and a president urging them to press ahead on divisive issues such as health care, Democratic lawmakers must soon decide whether Barack Obama is leading them toward statesmanlike courage or political folly.

Tolerance: Saudi woman gets 300 lashes, prison for 'false complaints'

The Saudi Gazette:

JEDDAH – A court in Ras sentenced a Saudi woman Wednesday to one-and-a half years in prison and 300 lashes of the whip for filing false complaints against government officials and further threatened to “strip her of her Saudi nationality” if she repeated the offence.

The woman was also charged with making visits to government offices over a case against her husband without the company of a legal male guardian.

The woman, who intends to appeal the ruling, has received an official copy of the verdict’s details and now has ten days to appeal... If upheld, the ruling will not be subject to pardon - according to the court - and the lashes will be administered at intervals during her prison term.

According to her husband, the convicted woman is currently being held in prison with their baby girl.

I'm trying to add some snark here, but coming up empty.

You know, I forgot Chris Matthews was an alcoholic tonight for an hour

Until reminded by NewsBusters that Matthews had beclowned himself for the umpteenth time.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: You know, I was trying to think about who he was tonight, and it's interesting: He is post-racial by all appearances. You know, I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. You know, he's gone a long way to become a leader of this country and passed so much history in just a year or two. I mean, it's something we don't even think about. I was watching, I said, "Wait a minute. He's an African-American guy in front of a bunch of other white people, and there he is, President of the United States, and we've completely forgotten that tonight. Completely forgotten it."

Like most Americans, I'd also forgotten Matthews was even on TV, since his show gets lower ratings than the laundromat's tumble-dry setting.

Obama's one true SOTU statement: "We face a deficit of trust." He forgot, "We also face a surplus of talk -- and of government."

President Obama's performance last night was historic: for all the wrong reasons. No State of the Union address was as petty, venal and fraudulent as this one. The reaction from the legal community and even the mainstream media was almost universally negative:

Michael Gerson of The Washington Post, not exactly a mouthpiece for the Tea Party movement, was disgusted: "After a series of political humiliations, Obama called on Republicans to change their course. Facing a general revolt against Washington, he proudly took credit for posting the names of White House visitors online. Promising to change the tone in Washington, he managed to be petty, backward looking, defiant and self-justifying... [he] has lost his promise. He has lost his momentum. He has lost his touch. He has lost his filibuster-proof Senate majority. He has lost his first year in office. ...Tonight, he lost his grip on reality."

Randy Barnett -- a Professor of Law at Georgetown, writing at Politico -- blistered the President's speech: "In the history of the State of the Union has any President ever called out the Supreme Court by name, and egged on the Congress to jeer a Supreme Court decision, while the Justices were seated politely before him surrounded by hundreds Congressmen? To call upon the Congress to countermand (somehow) by statute a constitutional decision, indeed a decision applying the First Amendment? ...this was a truly shocking lack of decorum and disrespect towards the Supreme Court for which an apology is in order. A new tone indeed."

Bradley Smith, a Professor of Law at Capital University, leveled withering criticism at the President's behavior: "...[his] statement is false. The Court held that [McCain-Feingold], which prohibits all corporate political spending, is unconstitutional. Foreign nationals, [including] corporations, are prohibit[ed] from making [contributions,] which was not at issue in the case... This is either blithering ignorance of the law or demagoguery of the worst kind."

Bernie Becker of The New York Times mildly chastised Obama: "There may not have been a “You Lie” at this address, but it does seem like there was a 'Not True.' ...Those looked to be the words mouthed by Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. after Mr. Obama criticized the high court’s recent Citizens United decision. And, according to both The Times’s David D. Kirkpatrick and Linda Greenhouse, Mr. Obama’s take on the case was not quite spot on."

David Lat, writing at Above the Law, "...I agree that it was a bit — well, tacky — for Obama to call out the Court like that, and to make them sit there like chastened schoolchildren while everyone around them stood and applauded."

Politifact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning political assessment website, said Obama was exaggerating: "Based on our reading of the court's opinion and interviews with campaign law experts, we find that Obama has overstated the ruling's immediate impact on foreign companies' ability to spend unlimited money in U.S. political campaigns. While such an outcome may be possible, the majority opinion specifically said it wasn't addressing that point, and only further litigation would settle the matter once and for all. So we find Obama's claim to be Barely True."

Joel Achenbach of The Washington Post believes this was not a wise fight for Obama to pick: "[His] decision to take on the Supreme Court's recent campaign-finance ruling, and to do right in the face of the justices in the front row, has certainly succeeded in making a splash... I'm just not sure that's the pool that Obama wanted to jump in... Strategic error, says here."

Jazz Shaw of "The Moderate Voice" was somewhat shocked: "This was a rather stunning conclusion coming from a President who was supposed to have taught constitutional law. I’m not sure which is worse… the idea that Obama is intentionally lying about the court decision to score political points or that neither he nor any of his advisers and speech writers understand the court ruling. In any event, when you wake up today and see a number of left leaning writers running around with their hair on fire over Alito’s reaction, just keep the above facts in mind. Alito silently remarked that Obama was 'wrong' on the facts. And he was. Totally wrong, as it turns out."

* * *

Coming from the party that openly attempts to grant amnesty to illegal aliens and continually reaches for "one world" government treaties, the "foreign influence" straw-man raised by Obama is laughable.

Not to mention classless.

Mark Levin Goes Off

If you've never heard a Mark Levin rant before, let me be the first to welcome you to the jungle.

This one here's a classic (MP3 format).

Listen and distribute -- far and wide.

Update: Levin's quick reaction to the SOTU.

James O'Keefe Abdulmutallab

Anyone else wondering how the Obama Justice Department could so badly flub the detainment of underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (hereafter referred to as Yabba Dabba Doo)? After a few minutes of confession, someone apparently read Miranda Rights to the would-be mass murderer after which Yabba clammed and lawyered up.

Yet let investigative journalist James O'Keefe meander into Mary Landrieu's office and sit down in a guest chair, and he's instantly arrested by up-armored federal authorities and charged with a felony?

I wonder whether this sort of thing is related to the type of 'selective justice' that our beloved Attorney General is so famous for?

Send John McCain into retirement: Support J. D. Hayworth for United States Senate

John McCain was a terrible -- terrible -- candidate for president in 2008. He advocated cap-and-trade to deal with the non-existent warmal colding scam; he tried to shove amnesty for illegal immigrants down our throats; he tried to destroy freedom of speech with McCain-Feingold; he was one of the "Gang of 14" that let Democrats illegally filibuster conservative judicial nominees; and he couldn't articulate a coherent sentence during the campaign ("Heh, heh... my friends"). And he certainly doesn't understand the Constitution and the principles of our founding.

And if all of those factors don't gall you, his disgusting dirty tricks campaign against GOP primary contender J. D. Hayworth will.

One year after seeing his presidential ambitions extinguished in an overwhelming defeat, Arizona Sen. John McCain is launching a scorched-earth campaign aimed at incinerating a reelection challenge from J.D. Hayworth, the conservative former Arizona congressman and radio talk show host.

McCain is attempting, with a series of hardball tactics, to cut Hayworth down before his campaign even gets off the ground...

...He’s mounted a concerted effort during the past month to push Hayworth off the airwaves, run an ad targeting Hayworth on his own radio station and warned him through emissaries that going through with a bid to unseat McCain would be a serious mistake.

...Hayworth spokesman Jason Rose said Hayworth’s announcement Friday that he was canceling his show — which came just hours before he declared that he was launching a campaign — was owed in no small part to the pressure the McCain forces brought to bear on the station.

“John McCain is a powerful and influential figure and served on the Commerce Committee,” said Rose, who went on to argue that radio executives feared the Arizona senator’s “wrath.”

...One source familiar with the McCain campaign said the offensive was only a preview of things to come, adding, “I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of this.”

[McCain's surrogates] filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission... and [the] effort to shoot down Hayworth has also taken place behind the scenes, according to several sources, with McCain allies warning Hayworth against a campaign...

McCain has reconvened his team of seasoned operatives from his 2008 White House run to meet the Hayworth challenge. Heading up the effort are Rick Davis, McCain’s 2008 campaign manager; Charlie Black, a senior adviser on the campaign; Christian Ferry, McCain’s deputy campaign manager; and Fred Davis, the veteran longtime GOP media consultant who oversaw McCain’s ad effort...

These are the same operatives and the same candidate who wouldn't even mention Barack Obama's Marxist, anti-American preacher of 20 years during the campaign! Who wouldn't raise Obama's dozens of other radical connections, any one of which would have disqualified him from the office of the presidency in the eyes of most Americans.

To put it bluntly: he played patty-cake with Obama while acting like Donald Segretti against fellow Republicans.

If you've had enough of mush-mouthed Republicans who don't read or can't understand the Constitution, I urge you to support J. D. Hayworth for United States Senate.

Earthquake Preparedness

Papa B writes:

For folks who live in the Midwest and have seen the effects of the earthquake in Haiti, it's worth acquainting yourself with the New Madrid Fault.

Charleston, SC had one of the worst earthquakes in 1888, which I think was related to New Madrid.

I always carry a "to go" bag in my trunk.

Knowing Papa B as I do, I would guess this is a duffel bag packed with -- at minimum -- a Beretta 92FS, a carbine, twenty or more loaded mags, some gold and silver bullion, a week's worth of MREs and a Katadyn water filter.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
