Gee, it's a shame that PDF software is so complicated: Redaction boo-boo reveals Blago's secret dealings with President Obama

NBC Chicago reports that someone made a serious boo-boo in the trial of former Illinois Governor Rod "Blago" Blagojevich.

One of the key elements of the Blago trial revolves around the negotiations between the disgraced ex-Gov and the White House over the empty Obama Senate seat.*. In fact, Blago's attorneys have asked for a trial subpoena to compel President Obama's testimony.

That motion was supposed to be mostly redacted, but someone flubbed PDF 101. In fact, the complete document was fully visible if the text was selected, copied and then pasted into a fresh document. The error was first discovered by Capitol Fax.

1. Obama may have lied about conversations with convicted fraudster Tony Rezko

Blagojevich's lawyers allege that Rezko admitted breaking the law by contributing "a large sum of cash" to a public official. Blagojevich's attorneys say that public official is Obama. Obama said that Rezko never relayed a request from a lobbyist to hold a fundraiser in favor of favorable legislative action. But the point may be moot: regardless of Obama talking/not talking to Rezko, Blagojevich's attorneys say that Obama refused the request regardless.

Redacted portion: However, the defense has a good faith belief that Mr. Rezko, President Obama’s former friend, fund-raiser, and neighbor told the FBI and the United States Attorneys a different story about President Obama. In a recent in camera proceeding, the government tendered a three paragraph letter indicating that Rezko “has stated in interviews with the government that he engaged in election law violations by personally contributing a large sum of cash to the campaign of a public official who is not Rod Blagojevich. … Further, the public official denies being aware of cash contributions to his campaign by Rezko or others and denies having conversations with Rezko related to cash contributions. … Rezko has also stated in interviews with the government that he believed he transmitted a quid pro quo offer from a lobbyist to the public official, whereby the lobbyist would hold a fundraiser for the official in exchange for favorable official action, but that the public official rejected the offer. The public official denies any such conversation. In addition, Rezko has stated to the government that he and the public official had certain conversations about gaming legislation and administration, which the public official denies having had.

Redacted footnote: The defense has a good faith belief that this public official is Barack Obama.

2. Obama may have overtly recommended Valerie Jarret for his Senate seat

Blagojevich's defense team basically alleges that Obama told a certain labor union official that he (Obama) would support Valerie Jarrett's candidacy for the Senate seat. Jarrett, referred to as "Senate Candidate B", is now a senior advisor to the president.

Redacted portion: Yet, despite President Obama stating that no representatives of his had any part of any deals, labor union president told the FBI and the United States Attorneys that he spoke to labor union official on November 3, 2008 who received a phone message from Obama that evening. After labor union official listened to the message labor union official told labor union president “I’m the one”. Labor union president took that to mean that labor union official was to be the one to deliver the message on behalf of Obama that Senate Candidate B was his pick. (Labor union president 302, February 2, 2009, p. 7).

Labor union official told the FBI and the United States Attorneys “Obama expressed his belief that [Senate Candidate B] would be a good Senator for the people of Illinois and would be a candidate who could win re-election. [Labor union official] advised Obama that [labor union official] would reach out to Governor Blagojevich and advocate for [Senate Candidate B].. . . [Labor union official] called [labor union president] and told [labor union president] that Obama was aware that [labor union official] would be reaching out to Blagojevich.” (Labor union official 302, February 3, 2009 p. 3).

3. A supporter of President Obama may have offered quid pro quo on a Jarrett senate appointment

Redacted portion: Supporter of Presidential Candidate Obama is mentioned in a phone call on November 3, 2008, having offered “fundraising” in exchange for Senate Candidate B for senator (Blagojevich Home Phone Call # 149).

4. Obama maintained a list of good Senate candidates

Redacted portion: President-elect Obama also suggested Senate Candidate A to Governor Blagojevich. John Harris told the FBI and the United States Attorneys that he spoke to President’s Chief of Staff on November 12, 2008. Harris took notes of the conversation and wrote that President’s Chief had previously worked as Blagojevich's press secretary. Obama agreed of Staff told Harris that Senate Candidate A was acceptable to Obama as a senate pick. (Harris handwritten notes, OOG1004463) President’s Chief of Staff told the FBI that “he could not say where but somewhere it was communicated to him that” Senate Candidate A was a suggested candidate viewed as one of the four “right” candidates “by the Obama transition team.”

5. Rahm Emanuel allegedly floated Cheryl Jackson's name for the Senate seat

Redacted portion: President’s Chief of Staff told the FBI that he had a conversation discussing the Senate seat with Obama on December 7, 2008 in Obama’s car. President’s Chief of Staff told the FBI “Obama expressed concern about Senate Candidate D being appointed as Senator.

[President’s Chief of Staff] suggested they might need an expanded list to possibly include names of African Americans that came out of the business world. [President’s Chief of Staff] thought he suggested Senate Candidate E who was the head of the Urban League and with President’s Chief of Staff’s suggestion.

6. Obama had a secret phone call with Blagojevich

Redacted portion: President-elect Obama also spoke to Governor Blagojevich on December 1, 2008 in Philadelphia. On Harris Cell Phone Call # 139, John Harris and Governor’s legal counsel discuss a conversation Blagojevich had with President-elect Obama. The government claims a conspiracy existed from October 22, 2008 continuing through December 9, 2008.6 That conversation is relevant to the defense of the government’s theory of an ongoing conspiracy. Only Rod Blagojevich and President Obama can testify to the contents of that conversation. The defense is allowed to present evidence that corroborates the defendant’s testimony.

Of course, virtually all of these assertions contradict the White House accounts. Remember this New York Times headline, which was published December 11, 2008?

I'll echo what the libs said during the Nixon era: it's not the crime, baby, it's the cover-up!

As an aside, the "union president" described herein is almost certainly SEIU president Andy Stern. Which may explain why Stern resigned in a hurry only days ago and blew the joint.

Don't let the door hit you on your ass on the way out, Andy.

'Have you seen this spitter? Report immediately to Beulah Balbricker. Do not attempt to apprehend this spitter, as it is armed and dangerous'

Jack Cashill is searching for a spitter. That would be the man accused of 'spitting' on Rep. 'Ward' Cleaver (D-Somewhere) during the curious events of March 20, 2010 near the Capitol Building. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus walked through a Tea Party rally challenging their takeover of the health care system.

Although "Spittlegate" has largely passed from the national news, it still has resonance in the Kansas City congressional district of Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, the "spittee" at the center of the Capitol Hill protest on March 20. Cleaver has milked the issue locally for a month, and his minions have been busily spreading the word that Cleaver's Republican opponent, Jacob Turk, is a friend of the Tea Party and thus a barely closeted Ku Kluxer. I wish I were exaggerating.

To put the issue to rest I would love to speak in all confidence to the stocky middle-aged man in black shirt and white hat clearly seen shouting at Cleaver in this video.

I've taken some stop-action shots of the man, who appears at the left side of the screen.

If you do recognize the man, please fire me an email, and I'll be sure and keep you anonymous if you prefer.

Balbricker: [Balbricker has a strong grip on Tommy Turner through the shower room wall]
Balbricker: I've got you *NOW*, TOMMY TURNER! And I'm taking you to the principal! Somebody get me the principal! Mr. Carter! Somebody get me the principal!
Balbricker: [Tommy is struggling to get free] You disgusting, little, filthy, *pervert*!
[Tommy finally gets free and gets out of there]
Balbricker: [through the wall] You *freak*! You filthy little pervert. I know you're in there.

Very cool: track home energy usage by plugging in a single sensor into an AC outlet

Home electronics firm Belkin just announced that it acquired a 27-year old professor's technology for monitoring home power usage. The idea sounds boring - but, rest assured, it's not.

The company, Zensi, specializes in technology for monitoring home-energy usage by plugging a sensor into an outlet. It was developed at the UW and Georgia Tech, where Patel was previously a graduate student.

The idea is to dramatically simplify a process that can otherwise require working with an electrician, accessing a breaker panel, or other complicated approaches, explained Patel, 27, an assistant professor in the UW Department of Computer Science & Engineering. After it's plugged into the wall, the device infers energy consumption by sensing a variety of signals that appliances, electronics and other machines inadvertently send over power lines in the home.

Powerline Event Detection (PED) uses a single plug-in sensor that monitors the noise on power lines. It can identify and classify various events (e.g., a washing machine turning on and off) through their unique signatures.

A 2007 academic paper described the approach (PDF).

By observing actuation of certain electrical devices, the location and activity of people in the space can be inferred and used for applications that rely on this contextual information. For example, detecting that a light switch was turned on can be an indication that someone entered a room, and thus an application could adjust the thermostat to make that room more comfortable. We can also detect other human-initiated kitchen events, such as a light turning on inside a refrigerator or microwave when its door is opened. The combination of these events may indicate meal preparation. Our approach also has implications for providing a low-cost solution for monitoring energy usage...

An application could log when particular electrical loads are active, revealing how and when electrical energy is consumed in the household, leading to suggestions on how to maintain a more energy-efficient household. In addition, because our approach is capable of differentiating between the on and off events of a particular device in real time, those events can be “linked” to other actuators for a variety of home automation scenarios. One can imagine a home automation system that maps the actuation of a stereo system to an existing light switch without having to install additional wiring.

Very cool.

Michael Steele and leftist race-baiters agree: let's keep fomenting division as deficits soar and the country teeters on the brink

The bloggers on the left finally found a way to encourage Michael Steele: they really loved his remarks concerning racial divisiveness.

Michael Steele Says Something Sensible (For Once)

Why should an African-American vote Republican? ...“You really don’t have a reason to, to be honest — we haven’t done a very good job of really giving you one. True? True,” Republican National Chairman Michael Steele told 200 DePaul University students Tuesday night.

But to keep a job in the GOP — well, it apparently requires checking your good sense and your compassion at the door. Here’s hoping we see more of this Steele with a spine rather than the typical soft-minded reactionary Party of No talking points he’s usually spewing

So the party of Martin Luther King, Jr., the party that created the Civil Rights movement, the party that was formed to eradicate the scourge of slavery -- the Rebublican Party -- has to pander to each race, religion and creed? Bulls***!

We conservatives love Lt. Col. Alan West, author Lloyd Marcus, NBRA founder Frances Rice and pundit Alfonzo Rachel not because they are Black, but because they are conservatives.

These men and women are heroes to the conservative movement because they believe in our founding document and our highest law.

These men and women don't represent a "Party of No", they lead the "Party of 'No, You Will Not Violate Our Beloved Constitution!'"

The ultimate big tent is the Consitution. It provides the fabric that supports freedom, opportunity and helped create the most magnificent society ever seen on Earth. The Constitution undergirds the free market; the very same free market that this rogue Democrat Congress and this President are destroying. They are trying to replace our amazing system of government with a failed version of Statism that can't succeed and has, in fact, never succeeded. They are violating every tenet of our founding and contravening the Constitution.

Did America's founders break away from an authoritarian, centralized government for this? Hell, no!

The free market is the most color-blind system of all. The truck driver does not know the racial backgrounds of the manufacturer of the goods he conveys. The airline pilot does not know the color of the people who produced the jet fuel his aircraft consumes. The baker doesn't know the religion of those who end up eating his cakes.

Nor do they care!

Today in America, Blacks prosper at every level of American life from the Presidency on down. In every facet of society, Blacks and other minorities have thrived: in politics, on Wall Street, in Hollywood, in athletics, in academia; anywhere that they have endeavored to succeed, they've done so.

Because the only color the free market cares about is green.

If a Black person, an Asian, a Mexican, a Native American, a Catholic, a Jew, a Baptist, a Buddhist, or anyone encounters prejudice in our society, I will stand shoulder to shoulder with that person to fight it. As would almost every American. Because that behavior is antithetical to our founding.

This leftist race-baiting is destructive. How's that Great Society working out, yo?

How's this for racism: did you know that if you control for single-parent families, there's no difference between the races when it comes to the prison population?

The Democrats' destructive policies give with one hand while enslaving with the other. Endless welfare programs promote single-parent families. Single-parent families lead to violent crime. Violent crime leads to more poverty, more single-parent families, more dependency.

The cycle continues on and on, supported and promoted by the race-baiters in the Democrat Party. And, through it all, our economy grows weaker, deficits grow higher, and the private sector gets smaller.

Our tent is the biggest of all tents. Because we're in the freedom camp, while the radical leftists push ever closer to tyranny and enslavement.

Update: Michael Steele, Wrong Again.

'Here Is How Your New, Soon To Be Worthless Money, Will Look Like'

Tyler Durden:

Judging by Ben Bernanke's recent abnormal behavior, we are quite confident the Fed forgot to add at least three zeroes to the latest version of the Benjamins.

Here is how the government is spending money to recreate old money, just so it can print even more money.

Maybe we can call 'em Weimar Bucks. Better get your wheelbarrows ready.

Iranian Missile May Be Able to Hit U.S. by 2015

"With sufficient foreign assistance, Iran could probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States by 2015," says a new 12 page unclassified report prepared by the Department of Defense on the Iran Military Threat.

The report says Iran's military strategy is designed to defend against external or "hard" threats from the United States and Israel. "Iran's nuclear program and its willingness to keep open the possibility to develop nuclear weapons is a central part of its deterrent strategy," according to the report.

...The report outlines Iran's nuclear weapons capabilities and developments saying it is "keeping open the option to develop nuclear weapons," which is consistent with what we've heard from a wide range of U.S. officials. It says the Iranians have gone to great lengths to protect its nuclear infrastructure from physical destruction including using buried and hardened facilities... The final aspects of the report review the regime's efforts to improve ballistic and cruise missile capabilities.

If your house was built before 1970, you may want to see if there's a forgotten bomb-shelter in your backyard. Because in our backyard, Iran is sending Qods Shock Troops to help solidify its hellish alliance with Hugo Chavez. Gee, isn't it great how respected America is now that Bush is gone?

Iran is increasing its paramilitary Qods force operatives in Venezuela while covertly continuing supplies of weapons and explosives to Taliban and other insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to the Pentagon's first report to Congress on Tehran's military.

The report on Iranian military power provides new details on the group known formally as the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), the Islamist shock troops deployed around the world to advance Iranian interests. The unit is aligned with terrorists in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, North Africa and Latin America, and the report warns that U.S. forces are likely to battle the Iranian paramilitaries in the future.

[It] highlights links between Iran and the anti-U.S. government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has been accused of backing Marxist terrorists in Colombia.

The report also states that Iran could conduct a test of a long-range missile by 2015 and now has missiles that can strike all of Israel.

"Iran continues to develop a ballistic missile that can (reach) regional adversaries, Israel and central Europe, including Iranian claims of an extended range variant of the [620-mile-range] Shahab-3 and a [1,242-mile] medium-range ballistic missile, the Ashura," the report says.

The report notes that Iran has the largest missile force in the Middle East, with about 1,000 missiles with ranges of between 90 miles and 1,200 miles. The missile program was developed and expanded with extensive help from North Korea and China, the report says.

The missiles have grown in sophistication with increased accuracy, warhead lethality and advanced technology that includes solid propellent for quick launches and anti-missile-defense capabilities for warheads.

The report says Iran is developing its military forces with some asymmetric weapons, including armed unmanned aircraft and coastal anti-ship missiles that can hit targets throughout the Strait of Hormuz, where up to 40 percent of the world's crude oil passes.

Every President before this one enforced something called The Monroe Doctrine, which plainly stated that any foreign interference in our hemisphere would lead to dire consequences.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was just such a situation, instigated by the Russians and repelled by a Democratic President named John F. Kennedy.

Instead we have a President who canceled missile defense programs, slashed our nuclear arsenal, promised not to respond with nukes if our country was attacked with chem- or bio-weapons and de-funded NASA.

Yet we continue to saddle our children with debt, finding trillions for "stimulus" programs, earmarks, "tax cuts" that are really welfare programs, endless unemployment checks and a new, unfunded entitlement program that nationalizes one-sixth of the economy.

The President's first duty is to protect this country. But apparently it's not this president's first duty.

The Obama Budget for 2011: A Deficit Volcano is About to Blow

The Heritage Foundation examined the President's 2011 budget proposal and, in a nutshell, what they found is truly shocking (PDF).

While legacy media publishes administration press releases and scapegoats Goldman Sachs, there can be no doubt that Barack Obama's agenda is the destruction of the American economy, which will be facilitated by a default on the public debt.

No president has proposed more reckless spending in the history of this country:

President Obama’s Budget

• Would permanently expand the federal government by 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) [Ed: app. $500 billion in 2011] over 2007 pre-recession levels;

• Would raise taxes on all Americans by nearly $3 trillion over the next decade;

• Would raise taxes for 3.2 million small businesses and upper-income taxpayers by an average of $300,000 over the next decade;

• Would borrow 42 cents for each dollar spent in 2010;

• Would run a $1.6 trillion deficit in 2010 — $143 billion higher than the recession-driven 2009 deficit;

• Would leave permanent deficits that top $1 trillion as late as 2020;

• Would dump an additional $74,000 per household of debt into the laps of our children and grandchildren;

• Would double the publicly held national debt to over $18 trillion.

Source: Heritage Foundation calculations based on U.S. Office of Management and Budget, Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2011 (Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government Printing Office, 2010), pp. 146–179, Tables S-1 through S-14. Also includes the cost of House-passed cap-and-trade bill, which President Obama endorsed yet excluded from his budget tables.

These projected deficits reach a level that simply cannot be repaid, especially when combined with unfunded entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare and an imminent tidal wave of retiring baby boomers.

Goldman Sachs isn't destroying the full faith and credit of the dollar. The bankers aren't destroying the economy.

The health insurers aren't to blame.

The Democrats' next target -- the oil, gas, coal and refinery companies -- aren't the culprits.

All of those industries produce real jobs, pay their taxes, are regulated by every level of government, and generate the revenue that allows government to exist.

Yet they are vilified by the National Socialist Democrat Party. And no matter how much damage they do, they can never equal this administration and the radical Leftists in Congress. November is our last chance, folks. We must crush these Democrats politically or I'm afraid it's going to be too late.
