Exactly one year before the 2012 election, Obama FCC schedules first-ever nationwide test of emergency broadcast system

Nothing to see here, please go about your business

Last night, just before midnight, C&S commenter "Ten Mile Island" described the FCC's bizarre demands to enact the country's first-ever nationwide test of the emergency broadcasting system.

Tonight, broadcasters across the country found out about a new, federal requirement.

On November 9th, the broadcasters and cable operators of this nation, will be airing the first national test of the Emergency Activation System. The message will be aired as an "EAN," the code for an Emergency Activation Notification.

Tonight, within hours of this post, broadcasters and cable operators learned, for the first time, that the requirements for those federally licensed operators, are required to have a new "EAS Handbook" at their individual control points. So, for more than 15,000 operations, we will be required to have, on-hand, a new document, that none of us has ever heard of before tonight.

Additionally, unknown before this evening, all broadcasters and cable operators are required to list information about their operations;

None of this was known to any of us before this evening. There was no process.

I've gone through the registration process. But there are literally thousands upon thousands of broadcasters and cable operators who will learn of this tomorrow. There will be thousands of broadcasters and cable operators who will never see this requirement pass their desks before the test, November 9th.

Why?

Because the process was entirely avoided. Is it legal? As a broadcaster, duh, yes. We live on the string pulled by Uncle Sam. Broadcasters have no rights. Only responsibilities. Is it fair? Who said anything in life is fair. Is it gentlemanly?

Are you kidding? Democrats and their stooges gentlemanly? Are you taking drugs?

Not to worry: it's just coincidental that this date is almost precisely one year to the day before the 2012 presidential election.

As an aside, can you imagine the hue and cry had Bush 43 tried this sort of thing?

If you're not just a wee bit concerned with the timing of this test, you're not paying attention.

The Free Officers Movement took over Egypt and there followed more than a half-century of war, anti-Western hysteria, terrorism, repression, social stagnation, and the basic Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse type stuff in the Middle East. That was the Era of Arab Nationalism.

On February 11, or October 23, or November 28, 2011, the Middle East entered a new era. Perfect: Obama DOJ wants to respond to Freedom of Information requests as if certain records "do not exist"

Say, this sounds a bit -- how you say? -- Orwellian? But don't trust me. I'm just a run-of-the-mill centrist blogger. Let's pop on over to London's Telegraph:

Barack Obama accused of breaking transparency pledge

President Barack Obama has been accused of breaking his promise to make the US government transparent, after it emerged public bodies may soon be allowed to lie about what records they hold.

Mr Obama's justice department has proposed that if documents requested by the public are exempt from freedom of information laws, federal agencies should be able to "respond to the request as if the excluded records did not exist."

Transparency campaigners described the move as a "stunning" reversal of Mr Obama's pledge to run "the most transparent administration in history" during his campaign for the presidency.

In a joint statement, the American Civil Liberties Union, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, and OpenTheGovernment.org said the plan threatens to "destroy integrity in government".

"It is very problematic," said Patrice McDermott, the director of OpenTheGovernment.org. "There are options open to them other than this nuclear option of lying to requesters".

The plan is the latest in a string of controversial moves by Mr Obama, who earlier this year even insisted on collecting an award for his commitment to transparency behind closed doors at the White House...

...Mr Obama also promised to release logs of visitors to the White House. Yet only one per cent of meetings have been listed and officials reportedly hold meetings in nearby coffee shops to deliberately avoid being subject to official logs.

"The administration has an official commitment to transparency, but it has been very disappointing," said Ms McDermott. "There is widespread distress among openness and civil liberties campaigners."

Gee. This is as surprising as the fact that unemployment didn't drop after the Stimulus package passed. Or that health care premiums didn't go down by an average of $2,500 a year after Obamacare was rammed through.

And all of the other failed promises/predictions made by the charismatic demagogue that the drones voted into office in 2008.

The Real Wealth Gap

Joan:

And then the fight started [Papa B]

Papa B:

My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, 'What's on TV?'

I said, 'Dust.'

And then the fight started.

My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, 'I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds..'

I bought her a scale.

And then the fight started.

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive.

So, I took her to a gas station.

And then the fight started.

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home.

I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.

The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.

She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.

She said, 'you should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too.'

And then the fight started.

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'

'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'

'My God!' says my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'

And then the fight started.

I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny?

Yeah, well I couldn't believe it... he was a DWARF!!!

He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY!'

So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?'

And then the fight started.

Welcome to the New Middle East, or What I Like to Call "The Obama Caliphate"

Perhaps some Democrat foreign policy expert -- if there is such a thing -- can explain "The Obama Doctrine" to me. Let's review, shall we?

Tunisia - democratic elections in this once-peaceful Mediterranean state have installed an Islamist party. Curiously, the aptly named State Department blog ("DipNote") congratulated the country's new extremist overlords.

Libya - a NATO-supported rebel force helped defeat the terrorist dictator Muammar Gaddafi, but also left the country in control of one Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, who has declared his government's "fealty to Shariah, Islam's brutally repressive, totalitarian political-military-legal doctrine."

Egypt - once the peaceful ally of both Israel and the United States, the overthrow of President Mubarak was quickly and publicly supported by President Obama. In Mubarak's place, a hard-core Islamist leadership has arisen under the direction of the feared Muslim Brotherhood. The country's downtrodden Coptic Christian community is also being systematically eliminated, the hallmark of religous governments in majority Islamic countries.

Syria - a similar anti-government rebellion in Syria was curiously ignored by the administration, leading to the slaughter of at least 3,000 civilians by Iran's puppet dictator Bashar al-Assad.

Iran - Likewise, a liberal, democratic revolt in Iran against the country's extremist leaders -- the so-called "Green Revolution" -- was brutally repressed with nary a word from President Obama. The country's thinly veiled pursuit of nuclear warheads therefore continues apace.

Iraq - is slated for abandonment by the end of the year to the tender mercies of Iran's Mullahs (coincidentally, just in time for the 2012 campaign)

Israel - our most steadfast ally in the entire world was told in no uncertain terms by President Obama to unilaterally withdraw to its 1967 borders, otherwise known as the "Holocaust lines".

We are witnessing something historic. But not-in-a-good-way historic. The die has been cast for a new and even more hyper-violent Middle East.

Natural Born Citizens [Papa B]

Papa B:

This just might make your day a little brighter! You, who worry about Democrats versus Republicans - relax, here is our real problem:

In a Purdue University classroom, students were discussing qualifications to be President of the United States. It was pretty simple. The candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age. However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair the requirement was to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president. The class was taking it in and letting her rant, and not many jaws hit the floor until she wrapped up her argument by stating: "What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?"

Yep, these are the same kinds of people that are now voting in our elections!

*They breed and walk among us…*

Odd Coincidence: Same Democrats Supporting #OccupyWallStreet Have Also Received the Most Contributions From... Wall Street

Stinky, street-defecating, Marxist hippies hardest hit:

Despite their support of the Occupy Wall Street movement, (who, unlike the Tea Party, believe government is the answer to our economic problems), Democrats have enjoyed large paychecks from the industry.

...the President’s funds are much higher. He’s actually raised $3.9 million just this year so far. But, he has raised nearly $12 million in Wall Street donations for the DNC. In total, that’s more than all the Republican Presidential candidates combined have received from Wall Street...

Damn Democrats: they broke my Hypocrisy-Meter again.

Obama's Iraq Pullout: Motivated by Reelection Fundraising Concerns, Not American National Security Interests

And you'd expect anything different from this president?

Yesterday, I had the feeling that... Obama's announced withdrawal of our troops from Iraq was purely political, timed for the 2012 election as a way of rallying his far-Left, anti-military, Code Pinko base.

This e-mail from Obama's campaign today proves it...

Friend --

I'm James Kvaal, the new policy director for President Obama's 2012 campaign... Yesterday, we accomplished one major change when President Obama announced that all American troops in Iraq will be home before the holidays.

With that action, the Iraq war will end. And one of the President's central promises will have been kept... Now, thanks to the actions of this President, we can say that conflict is coming to a close. [Ed: not the military, mind you... "this President"]

...These outcomes are an example of what happens when a leader sets a plan and sees it through. In the last campaign, the President committed to getting American troops home while leaving behind a stable and secure Iraq. You rallied around that vision, and now that promise has been fulfilled.

"And we accept Visa, Mastercard and PayPal!"

Of course, back in the little land we like to call reality, the decision will have significant consequences for our allies in the Middle East.

Up until Friday, the Obama Administration had insisted that negotiations were on track for extending the presence of a small residual force that U.S. and Iraqi military leaders agreed were necessary to support Iraqi operations in key areas such as counterterrorism, air support, intelligence gathering, logistics, and training. But Friday, in a hard-hitting article posted on The Cable blog, Josh Rogin reported that the Administration had bungled the negotiations...

...In the wake of its decision, the Obama Administration is already anticipating the consequences of the power vacuum it has created. In a series of interviews on Sunday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Iran that even though troops will be withdrawn, the U.S. will still maintain a presence in the region. “Iran would be badly miscalculating if they did not look at the entire region and all of our presence in many countries in the region, both in bases, in training, with NATO allies, like Turkey.”

The reality, though, is that the United States has weakened its presence at a time when the region can least afford it.

We may soon find out what happens in a power vacuum when Iran's religious fanatics -- bent on "martyrdom" -- acquire nuclear weapons.

Terrifying Chart o' the Day: It Was the Plan All Along

...yesterday, in Denver, I signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will create or save -- (applause.) The act will create or save 3.5 million jobs over the next two years -- including 70,000 right here in Arizona, right here -- (applause) -- doing the work America needs done. And we're also going to work to stabilize, repair and reform our financial system to get credit flowing again to families and businesses.

And we will pursue the housing plan I'm outlining today. And through this plan, we will help between 7 and 9 million families restructure or refinance their mortgages so they can afford -- avoid foreclosure. And we're not just helping homeowners at risk of falling over the edge; we're preventing their neighbors from being pulled over that edge, too -- as defaults and foreclosures contribute to sinking home values, and failing local businesses, and lost jobs. --President Barack Obama, 18 February 2009

Interesting how the media -- not to mention Democrats, but I repeat myself -- never go back and examine the results of their policy prescriptions. Perhaps that's because their consistent track record of failure is demoralizing, humiliating and revealing. In any event, here are the actual results of President Obama's two-and-a-half years of centrally managing the mortgage market.

One word: catastrophic. Despite all of the Soviet-style exercises in central planning, all of the endless tax credits, incentives, and authoritarian lever-pulling of the Left, they've actually made things worse, not better.

Here are some of the programs listed under the government's MakingHomeAffordable.com site (888-995-HOPE):

Not to mention the billions wasted on housing in the "Stimulus" package including the Tax Credit Exchange Program (“TCEP”), the HUD Tax Credit Assistance Program (“TCAP”, and the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

Tens of billions of dollars wasted on useless programs that are more payoffs and wealth transfers to political cronies than legitimate functions of a constitutional federal government.

And the President is now proposing yet another foreclosure fix -- opening up the HARP program to everyone. What could possibly go wrong?

Everything this president has touched appears to have turned to fecal matter. Which, if Professors Cloward and Piven can be believed, was the plan all along.

Funniest Global Warming Headline o' the Day, No--Week, No--Month, Ah, F- It... of the Year

Someone named "Fred Grimm", if that is his real name, penned the funniest climate fraud headline of 2012 (via Soylent Green):

Sea levels will rise, washing away climate deniers

The rising sea will wash across great swaths of South Florida. Salt water will contaminate the well fields. Roads and farmland and low-lying neighborhoods will be inundated. The soil will no longer absorb the kind of heavy rainfalls that drenched South Florida last weekend. Septic tanks will fail. Drainage canals won’t drain. Sewers will back up. Intense storms will pummel the beachfront. Mighty rainfalls, in between droughts, will bring more floods.

The economic losses and the mitigation costs associated with the effects of global warming over the next few decades will be overwhelming. It will cost a medium-sized town like Pompano Beach hundreds of millions just to salvage its water and sewage systems...

Grimm cites a Florida Atlantic study as the source for his dire predictions. Of course, whether the FAU study was funded by the billions the federal government has wasted invested in the global warming grift is -- apparently -- too daunting a task for Mr. Grimm to research.

For those unfamiliar with how the United Nations touched off the global warming climate change scam as a purely money-making ruse, please see "This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow...."

Libya's interim leader outlined more radical plans to introduce Islamic law than expected as he declared the official liberation of the country.

Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the chairman of the National Transitional Council and de facto president, had already declared that Libyan laws in future would have Sharia, the Islamic code, as its "basic source".

Bulletin: French President Sarkozy Finds Gaddafi's Will -- Says It Pledged His Entire $200 Billion Fortune to "Save the EU"

Okay, I made that up. The European Union is toast and the only question is when the dominoes fall. If the bond markets are any indication, it won't be long.

I have summarized the fundamentals in this one graphic: the European dominoes of debt. Simply put, there is no way the EU authorities can stop the first domino--Greek default or equivalent writedown of its impossible debt load--from toppling the over-leveraged banks which will be rendered insolvent when forced to recognize their losses...

...That leaves each nation with the politically unsavory option of bailing out its premier banks with taxpayer money, and squeezing the money out of its citizenry via higher taxes and austerity. That assumption of bank debt will in turn trigger downgrades of heavily indebted sovereign nations such as France, moves that will raise rates and make the bailout even more costly to taxpayers, who will also be suffering from reductions of income due to global recession.

Once the banks and bondholders accept a 50%-75% writedown in Greek debt, then the other debtor nations will be justified in demanding the same writedown in their crushing debts. This dynamic leads to estimates that 3 trillion euros will be needed to bail all the players out. Alternatively, total losses will equal 3 trillion euros, wiping out banks and bondholders of sovereign debt.

The German economy is simply not big enough to fund a 3 trillion-euro bailout... ...It has recently come to light that in the worst-case scenario (i.e. reality), "solving" Greece's debt crisis would absorb the entire EFSF Rescue Fund's 400 billion euros. By all accounts, every estimate of Greek tax revenue is overstated, and every estimate of its expenses understated; Greek GDP is collapsing. In all probability, the reality is worse than anyone is willing to confess...

I have an ominous feeling in the pit of my stomach that the European debt debacle will make Lehman's failure look like a frolic in the park.

The Genius of Chicago Politics: Top Aide to Rahm Emanuel Enacts Rule to Award Herself a $65K/Year Pension

Isn't a massive, unchecked, Democrat-controlled bureaucracy awesome?

Mayoral Chief of Staff Theresa Mintle helped enact a special early-retirement plan at her former employer—the Chicago Transit Authority—that entitled her to a $65,000 annual pension she wouldn't have qualified for otherwise.

...Ordinarily, Ms. Mintle, 47, would have needed 11 years of service to qualify for a pension at the CTA, a milestone she wouldn't have reached until 2014. But in 2008, she was involved in the approval and possibly the design of an early-retirement sweetener for agency executives containing two separate clauses that, together, allowed her to buy extra service credits and lock in her pension in exchange for leaving her job by mid-2011.

After days of avoiding questions from Crain's and the BGA, Mr. Emanuel's office said late Friday that Ms. Mintle has decided to forgo the CTA pension... News of Ms. Mintle's role in the pension deal comes at an awkward time for both Mr. Emanuel, who has been calling for big cuts in benefits owed to rank-and-file city workers, and for the CTA, where President Forrest Claypool last week proposed balancing his 2012 budget with tens of millions of dollars in concessions from CTA employee unions. In Chicago and across the state, pressure is building for cuts in public- employee retirement plans that have left governments with pension-funding shortfalls in the tens of billions of dollars.

...According to the CTA, Ms. Mintle joined the agency's government relations unit in 2003 at a salary of $105,000. A cousin of former Mayor Richard M. Daley, she rose quickly in pay and status, becoming chief of staff to Ms. Brown in 2007. Among the duties she picked up was serving on the boards of both the CTA's regular pension plan and its supplemental pension plan for top agency managers... CTA sources are sharply divided on exactly who came up with the idea for the plan and who wrote its terms. The agency refuses to release internal papers and memos detailing those matters.

...CTA officials say the early- retirement program was meant to replace more expensive veterans with lower-paid newcomers. But it didn't turn out that way in Ms. Mintle's case. Joan Coogan, her successor as chief of staff, gets the same annual salary Ms. Mintle got: $175,000.

Now you know a little bit more about the city where President Obama cut his teeth: the capital of government corruption and taxpayer abuse.

QOTD: "An employer or management can make operational decisions, such as where to locate, where to relocate, where to transfer work, whether to outsource. It can take into account the economic consequences of unionization. This is a core managerial right.” --Peter Schaumber, former member of National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)
