JANUARY 19TH IS GUN APPRECIATION DAY: Celebrate at a Range, Gun Show or Gun Store Near You

Tell everyone you know. Except for the irregular Americans.

If all goes according to plan, gun lovers will come out in droves on January 19 to support gun stores, gun ranges, and gun shows.

The national "Gun Appreciation Day," which is being launched by a coalition of conservative and gun rights groups, will take place the day before California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein is expected to introduce legislation for an assault weapon ban, and two days before President Barack Obama is inaugurated for his second term.

"We felt that there needed to be a swift, strong statement, Chick-fil-A style, to show that we're not only here but we're vocal," Gun Appreciation Day chairman and president of Republican new media consulting firm Political Media, Inc., Larry Ward tells Whispers.

Go ahead and retweet the news.

You know you want to.

I BELIEVE IRAN HAS A CLANDESTINE AGENT-OF-INFLUENCE BURROWED IN ACADEMIA: And His Name is Alan Dershowitz

Oh, now he tells us, just weeks after a pivotal election in which he backed the most virulently anti-Israel president in U.S. history.

President's Nomination of Hagel May Encourage Iran's Nuclear Ambitions

by Alan M. Dershowitz - January 7, 2013 at 1:30 pm

President Obama's nomination of Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense risks increasing the likelihood that Iran will develop nuclear weapons. It poses that risk because Hagel is well known for his opposition both to sanctions against Iran and to employing the military option if necessary.

These views are inconsistent with the very different views expressed by President Obama. The President has emphasized on numerous occasions that he will never allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons and will use military force if necessary to prevent that "game changer."

The nomination of Hagel thus sends a mixed message to the mullahs in Tehran, who will likely interpret it as a change from a red light to a yellow or green one when it comes to their desire to develop nuclear weapons... This is the wrong time to send mixed messages by nominating a man who has, at best, a mixed record with regard to sanctions and the military option against Iran and with regard to having Israel's back.

I can come to no other conclusion that Dershowitz is a clandestine agent for Iran, with op-eds like these serving as cover.

Well, it's either that or he's a delusional, progressive hack.

GUN CONTROL: Three completely unrelated news stories that vintage media somehow forgot to report

Please consider the following three news stories curiously missed by antique media:

•1• Why does Homeland Security need 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition?:

The Department of Homeland Security has purchased 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition- that is not a typo -- during the last six months. This includes 450 million rounds of .40 hollow point, 200 million rounds of .223 rifle ammunition, and 176,000 rounds of .308 168-grain hollow point boat tail (HPBT) that is used almost exclusively as ammo for sniper rifles.

•2• Dianne Feinstein's true stated goal is the unconstitutional confiscation of all firearms from civilians:

Astonishingly, there are gun owners who vote for Democrats. They must not understand the party’s objectives. Here Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) — author of the firearms legislation quickly brought forward to exploit Sandy Hook — makes those objectives crystal clear:

“If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States, for an outright ban, picking up [every gun]… Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ‘em all in.”

Note she doesn’t mention the Constitution as an obstacle; only the vote tally. As Obama’s economic policies make ever more Americans dependent on government largesse, vote tallies will soon cease to be a problem for authoritarian statists like Feinstein.

•3• President Obama has twice called for a 'Civilian National Security Force' just as strong, just as well-armed as the U.S. military.

In March of 2009, at the dedication ceremony of the National Defense University's Abraham Lincoln Hall, President Obama expressed his need for a civilian national security force (MP3, 74:00 mark; DOD press release, transcript):

America must balance and integrate all elements of our national power. We can not continue to push the burden onto our military alone, or leave dormant any aspect of the arsenal of American capability. That's why my administration is committed to renewing diplomacy as a tool of American power and developing our civilian national security capabilities.

"Our civilian national security capabilities?"

In July of 2008, Jim Lindren noted a couple of peculiar sentences in a Barack Obama speech.

In Barack Obama’s July 2, 2008 speech calling America to national service, Obama proposed “a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as our military... This has prompted some in the blogosphere to raise the specter of a huge new domestic paramilitary organization...

[Obama said] "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Curiously, the official transcript of the speech omitted those last two sentences.

QOTD: "Barack Obama benefits from a largely deferential liberal press in the United States which rarely questions his opulence in office. It would be unthinkable for the British prime minister to act in the same manner. If David Cameron flew off to Hawaii and billed the British public £5 million for his Christmas vacation, he would be out of a job.

President Obama frequently calls on the American people to make sacrifices, but he is simply unwilling to lead by example and do so himself...

...The president is elected to serve his country, rather than lord over it, a message which appears to be completely lost on the present White House. The federal government is simply running out of money, and America faces economic ruin unless spending is cut dramatically and the vast entitlements system is reformed. Barack Obama’s Hawaii vacation is merely a symbol of his wider presidency – a culture of impunity and extraordinary arrogance, reckless spending, a striking lack of accountability, and a shameless let them eat cake mentality. America’s middle class deserves to be treated better than this from a president who fails to practice what he preaches." --Nile Gardiner

HELPFUL POSTER: Low Information Voter Thoughts

The relentlessly awesome People's Cube offers us a glimpse inside the mind of the typical progressive:

Because if any of these jamokes had even the slightest interest in history, they'd be running as fast as they could from the Democrat Party.

NICE JOB, BLOOMBERG: NYC welfare funds being spent in strip clubs, porn joints, liquor stores...

...to name but a few. And I refer, of course, to the sanctimonious schmuck of a mayor and not the news service.

A database of 200 million Electronic Benefit Transfer records from January 2011 to July 2012, obtained by The Post through a Freedom of Information request, showed welfare recipients using their EBT cards to make dozens of cash withdrawals at ATMs inside Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn; the Blue Door Video porn shop in the East Village; The Anchor, a sleek SoHo lounge; the Patriot Saloon in TriBeCa; and Drinks Galore, a liquor distributor in The Bronx...
...One EBT machine is stationed inside Club Eleven, an infamous Hunts Point jiggle joint known as much for its violent history as its girls in pink thongs.

...Club Heat, another Bronx strip club that dispenses EBT cash, is also no stranger to violence. A 33-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head outside the club in December 2011.

Critics blasted the government for turning a blind eye to welfare’s sleazy money.

Yes, Mayor Bloomberg wants to regulate the size of soda cups, the use of salt and -- of course -- the ability of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves by carrying concealed weapons.

In the mean time, his city and state treasuries -- not exactly overflowing with cash at the moment -- are being looted while Bloomberg dreams up more failed, totalitarian plans.

CROOKED FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES: The Top 10 Crony Tax Breaks in the "Fiscal Cliff" Deal

I know that regular readers require no additional proof that Washington is irreparably broken. But if you want to see just how filthy and disgusting the Beltway really is, just peel the onion on the "Fiscal Cliff" tax deal: doing so reveals roughly $40 billion in payoffs to every special interest with a connected lobbyist.

The top 10 crony tax breaks in the package:

10. “An accelerated tax write-off for owners of NASCAR tracks (cost: $78 million).”

9. “A tax credit for companies operating in American Samoa ($62 million), including a StarKist factory.”

8. “A $222 million rum tax rebate.”

7. For “businesses located on Indian reservations . . . $222 million in accelerated depreciation.”

6. A $12 billion “wind production tax credit.”

5. A $59 million “algae-based fuel” tax credit.

4. A $7 million “plug-in motorcycle” tax credit.

3. A $154 million tax credit for “builders of energy-efficient homes.”

2. A $650 million tax credit for "manufacturers of energy-efficient appliances."

And your winner is:

1. A $430 million giveaway to Hollywood and its “film and television producers"

As The Objective Standard observes.

Congress avoided the so-called “fiscal cliff” only by passing tax hikes and leaving out-of-control federal spending practically untouched. But, to those with friends in political places, Congress rewarded special tax breaks.

Disgraced ex-Senator Chris "Sweetheart Loan" Dodd, a man so crooked you can open wine bottles with him, deserves special dishonor: he was responsible for the payoffs to Hollywood.

We are headed for economic collapse and the politicians -- Democrats and establishment Republicans -- are more interested in preserving their power and doling out favors than saving the country.

JUST PERFECT: New "Eco-friendly" AC Coolant Said to Catch Fire, Poison Humans, Melt Windshields

Chalk this up as yet another epic failure by the ecotards (which is the term they prefer, I hear).

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed... [After testing, the EU declared] that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.

Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test[s] was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine... Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.

Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

...At least two other German and Austrian testing agencies have cautioned against the new chemical, a German firefighters organization has lobbied to have it banned while a rival German firefighters organization has cleared it for use, some German authorities are asking that automakers be given more time by the EU to conduct more tests, and it's reported that 13 carmakers have begun their own testing based on Daimler's initial findings.

A report in Bloomberg says that Volkswagen has joined Daimler in refusing to use R-1234yf in its cars. There aren't any 2013 VW models that fall under the EU mandate for use this year, so the fact that VW is speaking up means it wishes to lodge a vocal protest. Other automakers are still committed to the new chemical; Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC are still switching over in 2013, and Toyota in the EU has gone on record saying it hasn't found any safety issue with R-1234yf. The EU says it will enforce its decree [and] a Honeywell manager say[s], "The key element for the EU government is forcing the implementation of their rule."

Ain't central planning grand?

Hopefully this "green initiative" doesn't cost as many lives as the eco-Statists' last big propaganda campaign.

VIDEO: Watch the world's oldest dashcam footage, circa 1926

Absolutely amazing:

The archives of the Fire Department of New York has released footage of a borough department responding to a fire in 1926. In the first of two silent videos, the camera is mounted on the car transporting Fire Chief John Kenlon from the Brooklyn Fire Department to a storage warehouse fire on East 123rd Street. Kenlon's name comes up frequently in the rise of the FDNY during the early part of the 20th century. The date of the video is given as April 24, 1926, and it was not only a remarkably snowy spring day, it could be the first dashcam video ever.

...The low-res screencap above shows the hood of Kenlon's vehicle, with a clanging bell at the front, driving on the sidewalk among pedestrians to get to the fire. As you'll see in the videos below, the situation on the actual roads was just as chaotic as the driving. So is the footage playback itself, which repeats and plays upside down and backwards at times, but we think is worth every second.

The video is arguably more exciting than the iconic chase scene from Bullit. And suitable justification for some bare minimum of traffic laws.

QOTD: "[CAIR’s communications director] Hooper’s demand that “Islamist” be removed from the lexicon is ironic, since his bosses seemed more than comfortable placing themselves firmly in the world of “Islamists” back in 1993. CAIR founders Omar Ahmad and Nihad Awad joined two dozen Hamas supporters in Philadelphia for a fall weekend in an urgent meeting called to discuss ways to “derail” the U.S.-brokered Oslo Accords.

The FBI bugged the meeting room. Transcripts entered into evidence during a 2008 Hamas-financing trial show the participants referred to “Islamists” dozens of times. Ahmad helped lead the meeting, helping determine who might attend and calling it to order.

The FBI described the group as Hamas members and supporters. “Hamas’ agenda was not only to eliminate Israel,” prosecutors wrote, “but also to sabotage the Oslo Accords and to replace the secular PA regime with an Islamist government that would control all of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.”" --Steven Emerson, IPT

100 years of malevolent skulduggery by the progressive movement -- influencing education, culture and morals -- appear to have succeeded. How else to explain this headline?

PAGANI HUAYRA: Daddy Like

If you're into cars and don't visit BadBlue.com/Cars every 12 minutes, you're missing out on stories like TopGear's Hypercar of the Year:

The Hypercar of the Year is not going to revolutionise personal transport, reinvent motorsport or solve the looming energy crisis. Far from it, in fact. Unlikely to squeeze very much to the gallon, it will be made in tiny numbers and, at around £800,000 – more than three times the price of a Lamborghini Aventador – it will be bought by just a very few, very rich characters who will enjoy the exquisite qualities of a machine so unlikely ever to be a real, material presence in most of our lives that it may as well be a unicorn. And there it is: the Pagani Huayra, perhaps unicorn is the best way to think of it.

Even the ignition key is tasty.

Oh, and then there's the front view.

Associated Press Seems As Ungrammatical, Angry As Ever

Some rent-a-writer named Steve Peoples -- if that is his real name -- pens agitprop for the Democrat public relations agency known as the Associated Press. An op-ed under Peoples' byline -- labeled in the AP's traditional fashion as "news" (hold the guffaw) -- appeared in papers today. The unintentionally hilarious press release is emblematic of vintage media's vaunted "layers and layers of fact-checking".

Republican Party seems as divided, angry as ever

By STEVE PEOPLES
Associated Press

The Republican Party seems as divided and angry as ever.

Infighting has penetrated the highest levels of the House GOP leadership. Long-standing geographic tensions have increased, pitting endangered Northeastern Republicans against their colleagues from other parts of the country. Enraged tea party leaders are threatening to knock off dozens of Republicans who supported a measure that raised taxes on the nation's highest earners.

...one of the GOP's most popular voices [Ed: Heh], New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, blasted his party's "toxic internal politics" after House Republicans initially declined to approve [a $20 billion] disaster relief for victims of Superstorm Sandy [that was loaded with $40 billion of extraneous pork]. He said it was "disgusting to watch" their actions and he faulted the GOP's most powerful elected official, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

...To a greater degree than the Democrats, the Republican Party has struggled with internal divisions for the past few years. But these latest clashes have seemed especially public and vicious.

...Republicans haven't had a consistent standard-bearer since President George W. Bush left office in 2008 with the nation on the edge of a financial collapse. His departure, along with widespread economic concerns, gave rise to a tea party [sic] movement that infused the GOP's conservative base with energy. The tea party [sic] is credited with broad Republican gains in the 2010 congressional elections, but it's also blamed for the rising tension between the pragmatic and ideological wings of the party [only the ideological wing consists of the RINO neo-Statists and the pragmatists are the Constitutional Conservatives] - discord that festers still.

...Those on the GOP's deep bench of potential 2016 presidential contenders, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, have begun staking out their own, sometimes conflicting ideas for the party.

...Obama has outlined a second-term agenda focused on immigration and gun control; those are issues that would test Republican solidarity even in good times ["gun control... would test Republican solidary"? Uhm, right.]. Deep splits already exist between Republican pragmatists and the conservative base, who oppose any restrictions on guns or allowances for illegal immigrants. [How about Democrats and gun control?]

...Fiscal issues aren't going away, with lawmakers were agree [sic] on a broad deficit-reduction package. The federal government reached its borrowing limit last week, so Congress has about two months or three months [sic] to raise the debt ceiling or risk a default on federal debt [sic]. Massive defense and domestic spending cuts are set to take effect in late February. By late March, the current spending plan will end, raising the possibility of a government shutdown [which has happened many times in the past].

...Weary Republican strategists are trying to be hopeful about the GOP's path ahead, and liken the current situation to party's struggles after Obama's 2008 election. At the time, some pundits questioned the viability of the Republican Party. But it came roaring back two years later, thanks largely to the tea party [sic]...

Eh, Einstein: running into the debt ceiling does not mean a default on the debt. More than enough revenue comes into the federal coffers each month to pay principal and interest on the debt as well as fund the military, pensions, and additional services.

No, genius, what will be cut when we run into the ceiling is the bloated federal leviathan that is headed for certain collapse if something isn't done pronto to cut spending. Schmuck.

QUESTIONS: I've got questions

• What was the exact date that Democrats changed their minds and started loving the Bush Tax Cuts?

• Anyone ever look up Paul Krugman's credit score? Because if he runs his own finances the way he wants to run the federal budget, he couldn't buy a pack of Lucky Strikes on credit.

• Why doesn't the Equal Protection Clause prevent Congress from enacting all sorts of rules and regulations that apply to us, but not them (e.g., Obamacare, Social Security, etc.)?

• What's wrong with Harry Reid? I mean, what's clinically wrong with him? And, for that matter, what medical afflictions plague Joe "Spread Your Legs" Biden? And what does this mentally crimped pair tell us about the Democrat Party?

• What would you say to Bill Maher if you happened to get on an elevator with him?

• Is there no Republican leader who will call Barack Obama a Marxist? Because that's what he is -- and he has proudly said so in so many words (tax the rich, spread the wealth, punish big companies, ...).

• And are there no Democrats with virtue left? Are there no Democrats who will decry the fiscal abyss facing us, who would condemn their children and grandchildren to lives far more miserable then their own?

WE NEED MORE ROLL-FREE ZONES: GM Recalls More than 69,000 SUVs and Trucks Because They May Roll Away

A brake is a terrible thing to waste

General Motors... says more than 69,000 full-size pickup trucks and SUVs distributed globally may be affected by a problem that could cause them to roll away after being parked.

According to safety regulators, certain 2013 model Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles including the Escalade, Sierra and Silverado, may have been built with a cracked park lock cable or a malformed steering column lock actuator gear in the lock module assembly.

In this case, said vehicles may shift from Park with the ignition key removed or in the OFF position, as well as without the application of the brake pedal while the key is off... "Either of these scenarios may cause the vehicle to roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible vehicle crash and/or injury," GM said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In related good news, the U.S. taxpayer will get hosed for about $20 billion when it sells its GM stock, even though GM has reported roughly $16 billion in profits since President Obama "saved" the company -- using our money.

UNITED VAN LINES: Workers Fleeing Forced-Unionization States for Right-to-Work States

Dick Trumka hardest hit.

...According to an annual study conducted by the moving company United Van Lines, the top ten states that Americans are fleeing from continue to be those states that do not have Right-to-Work laws...
...In fact, according to UVL’s study, the Top Ten states with the highest outbound traffic are forced-unionism states:

MOVING OUT

The top-five outbound states for 2012 were:

  • New Jersey
  • Illinois
  • West Virginia
  • New York
  • New Mexico

New Jersey (62 percent) displaced the outbound leader from last year, Illinois (60 percent) reclaiming the top spot for high-outbound migration that it held in 2010.

The Northeast is the most well-represented region on the high-outbound traffic list. In addition to New Jersey, New York (58 percent), Maine (56 percent) and Connecticut (56 percent) are also included.

Michigan (58 percent) and Wisconsin (55 percent) along with Illinois represented the Great Lakes region. Michigan fell to the No. 6 from the No. 4 spot it held in 2011. Previously, it had claimed the top outbound spot every year from 2006-2009.

Kentucky (55 percent) joined West Virginia (58 percent) as the only Southern states to appear on the high outbound list. New Mexico (58 percent) was the only Western state to appear on the list. [Emphasis added.]

The fact that forced-union states have been losing taxpayers shouldn’t come as a surprise... where there are laws giving union bosses the power to force workers to pay unions or be fired, union bosses also have the power to get politicians elected that will raise taxes and enact legislation that make the state unattractive to running a business.

As a result, when businesses find a state hostile to business, they either close or move–leaving fewer jobs in the state.

All of this information will come as no surprise to real Americans, but will stun and shock the typical low-information Democrat voter.

HILARITY: Obama Voters Stunned to Find Their Paychecks Smaller

When it comes to the federal leviathan devouring larger and larger chunks of our economy, ignorance ain't bliss:

A friend forwarded this memo from his HR department:

Subject: 2013 Payroll Taxes
To: All Employees
Hello,

We have received a number of inquiries regarding changes to 2013 payroll taxes. As a company we must deduct payroll taxes as directed by the government. Our payroll provider has provided detailed information that you may use as you review your first paycheck of 2013. You can find this at the following link: http://www.adp.com/tools-and-resources/legislative-updates.aspx

Apparently a lot of people were complaining about their paychecks being unexpectedly smaller.

Here's the explanation from ADP:

The reduced 4.2% rate for employee Social Security taxes that was in effect for 2011 and 2012 has expired. The employee Social Security tax rate will return to 6.2% for 2013 wages up to the taxable wage limit of $113,700. Consequently, employees' net pay under the taxable wage limit will decrease accordingly. The maximum Social Security tax that an employee would pay will be $7,049.40 for 2013.

And as it turns out, workers making $30,000 will take a bigger hit on their pay than those earning $500,000!

But the funniest message of the day came from one of the kooks at Democratic Underground (since deleted from sheer embarrassment), to which Jim Treacher responded:

The term "useful idiots" was invented to describe these schmucks who continually vote for their own destruction.

COOLEST. TAXI. EVER.

Granted, it's a promotional stunt, but still...

For an advertisement by New York-based fashion brand Nooka, designer Mike Lubrano imagined converting a DeLorean into an iconic New York City yellow taxi cab. He says that the automobiles have ‘come to symbolize the future’ and communicate the brand’s ‘futuristic philosophy.’

Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever.

I still wanna ride in it.
