PITY THE FLY: Introducing the Bug-A-Salt Weapon

Hush, child: no one tell Dianne Feinstein about this glorious weapon, which the inventor calls "The World’s Very First Insect Eradication Gun".

The BUG-A-SALT rifle is the masterpiece of a working artist and surfer named Lorenzo Maggiore. After years of work to develop a prototype for the fly-killing salt gun, Lorenzo used his close and extended network to learn how he could introduce this product to the world.

After he knew the BUG-A-SALT was all he wanted it to be, the idea came about to conduct a pre-sale on a crowd-funding website called Indiegogo. Years in the making, and only one week online caused a global impression— a carefully crafted video that illustrated the goal of Lorenzo’s pre-sale campaign went viral, and a wave of internet-based consumers flooded in...

66 days later, having reached over 10,000 people in 70 different countries, the campaign ended and 21,000 BUG-A-SALTs (three containers) were spoken for. Lorenzo raised a total of $577,491, which initially made the BUG-A-SALT campaign the 3rd most funded project in the history of Indiegogo’s website. The BUG-A-SALT continues to thrive and currently holds a spot among the top 10 highest funded projects.

Non-toxic (except to flies), requiring no batteries, and using only a pinch of salt per round, Bug-A-Salt seems to be an entertaining way to rid your house of insects.

The Harbingers of Tyranny

Please consider the following news reports:

1. The Department of Homeland Security recently acquired 2 billion rounds of ammunition, which represents thousands of rounds per DHS employee.

2. Newly released drone records have revealed extensive military flights inside the U.S.; police departments and federal agencies plan to have as many as 30,000 drones monitoring Americans within the next seven years.

3. When Can the U.S. Kill Americans? The White House Won't Say -- and Won't Even Tell Congress; President Obama's successful efforts to renew and strengthen The Patriot Act under the NDAA means, according to the ACLU, American citizens may be subject to "indefinite military detention without charge or trial... for the first time in American history."

4. The FBI director said in March he'd have to check whether the president can assassinate citizens inside the U.S.. When questioned by Congress regarding a speech by Attorney General Holder, who offered his "legal justification for assassination", FBI Director Mueller was unable to say whether the president could unilaterally decide to assassinate U.S. citizens inside the borders of this country.

5. The DHS has specifically listed Americans who believe in "individual liberty" as potential terrorists. These "right-wing extremists" who insist in fidelity to the Constitution are, according to multiple studies funded by DHS, among the country's most dire terrorist threats. Not Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Ansar al-Islam, Hamas, or Iran's Revolutionary Guards -- together responsible for tens of thousands of murders -- but "violent right-wing extremists" who believe in the principles of the nation's founding.

6. The military recently deployed gunships over Miami, executing training exercises with local police departments. A few days later, similar exercises were conducted in Houston. Last year the military deployed ground forces, armored personnel carriers and tanks on the streets of St. Louis for "training exercises". Military exercises in domestic urban environments of this scale are "unprecedented".

7. Police departments throughout the country are receiving tanks, humvees and drones from the Department of Defense, according to a WLS-TV (Chicago) I-Team investigation. "Short of a weapon of mass destruction, you can get any kind of military gear that's out there," the police chief of Benedectine University told WLS. "We chose firearms and a vehicle." WLS also reported rampant theft of military equipment, including body armor and night-vision goggles issued to the Chicago Police Department.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Do these data points offer any context into President Obama's promise to create "a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded as our military?"

Conversely, do these news reports offer any insights into the president's efforts to disarm American citizens, a clear violation of the Bill of Rights?

The sources of these news items include such right-wing extremist groups as the ACLU, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and National Journal. Suffice it to say that even "progressives" appear to be getting antsy with the erosion of individual liberties and the militarization of police forces under this president.

All Americans, regardless of political persuasion, should be extremely concerned with these developments.

And the winner of the Superbowl was... Twitter!

Data assembled by the Altimeter Group indicates that Twitter was the dominant branding mechanism during the Superbowl, blasting Facebook in terms of volume.

Overall, we saw brands still hold onto corporate websites, although a big jump in hashtag usage, and decline in Facebook integration...

75% of Brands integrate second screen experience, up 7%. Overall, 75% of brand ads integrated social, mobile, hashtags, or apps in their $4m, 30 second spot (that’s $133k per second), this is up from 68% integration in 2012. This second screen promotion extends engagement to their websites and social sites, fostering a further integrated experience. Of note, Oreo was able to quickly create ads on social channels that tapped into the unexpected blackout, showing their advertising and marketing prowess, cross-screen. Expect this growth rate to only continue in 2014, as ads should cross the 80-90% integration rate.

Hashtags, presumably aimed for Twitter, dominate over Facebook. Hashtag integration in ads dominated the airtime, with 38% of ads including Hashtags in visual display on ads, up 31% out of a total of 64 ads. Twitter, a media-centric, network serves better for real time interactions of live events, rather than Facebook, which may spur deeper engagement through interactive media, social interactions, and applications...

And if you're not following me on Twitter, you're missing out on a veritable avalanche of borderline useful information.

A simple chart explains why things are going to have to get a whole lot worse before they get better

America's plethora of low-information voters say that the country is headed down the toilet. Yet, because many (or most) seem to get their news from The View, The Daily Show, Honey Boo-Boo, or NBC, they have largely disconnected the president's abysmal performance from the country's direction.

My contention, therefore, is that things will have to get much, much worse before the president's excuses, straw-men, and enemies lists finally begin to stink like the overripe corpses they are.

QOTD: "...the legitimate question is: How much time does money/credit have left and what are the investment consequences between now and then? Well, first I will admit that my supernova metaphor is more instructive than literal. The end of the global monetary system is not nigh. But the entropic characterization is most illustrative. Credit is now funneled increasingly into market speculation as opposed to productive innovation. Asset price appreciation as opposed to simple yield or “carry” is now critical to maintain the system’s momentum and longevity. Investment banking, which only a decade ago promoted small business development and transition to public markets, now is dominated by leveraged speculation and the Ponzi finance Minsky once warned against.

So our credit-based financial markets and the economy it supports are levered, fragile and increasingly entropic – it is running out of energy and time. When does money run out of time? The countdown begins when investable assets pose too much risk for too little return; when lenders desert credit markets for other alternatives such as cash or real assets." --Jeffrey Carter

Why does the "Top 150" list have 200 entries? Why does the Big Ten have, like, 48 teams?

Update: LibertyNews.com was inadvertently omitted; it would be #77 at a popularity ranking of 114,237. Biff Spackle's annual review will be modified to reflect this egregious error.

Update II: HopenChange Cartoons was also accidentally omitted. It would be #140 at a popularity ranking of 380,906.

GEE, WHO COULDA PREDICTED IT? Sales of Electric Vehicles Collapse in January

Never mind that the United States sits on hundreds or thousands of years of fossil fuel supplies. Never mind that. The federal government wants you to drive electric cars. The problem is, you ain't buyin' em.

EV sales had shown minor signs of life in the last quarter of 2012, only to collapse sharply in January. “Sales of the Chevrolet Volt, the Toyota Prius Plug-In and Nissan Leaf each had deep dropoffs in January from December,” Reuters says.

“Even after accounting for the fact that January is one of the slowest months of the year for auto sales, the dropoff for plug-in electric cars was considerable,” Michelle Krebs of Edmunds told the wire. According to Krebs, consumers are opting instead for less-expensive standard hybrids, rather than plug-in electric cars. OEMS blame other factors, such as limited supply, model year changeovers, or changeovers from Japanese to U.S. production, as it is the case for the Nissan LEAF. GM says January sales were down for the Volt because people bought before the end of the year to gain the 2012 tax credit. Which may have been the power behind the last quarter rise of the still tiny segment...

Ain't central planning grand?

I mean, how many billions of dollars did this administration waste on electric cars and batteries when the technology just isn't ready? When the full history of the Obama green energy program is written (starting with Solyndra, Fisker, A123 Systems, Tesla, etc.), it will make the Teapot Dome Scandal look like a shoplifting incident.

Thanks to Chief Justice John Roberts' outrageous Obamacare decision, though, it would seem the federal government has the legal right to command you to buy electric vehicles. So we got that goin' for us.

UNBELIEVABLE: Bloomberg secretly distributed abortifacients to teens without telling parents: "population control on blacks and Latinos"

When it comes to Mayor Bloomberg, salt and 16-ounce sodas are out -- but abortifacients are in.

Plan B has become Plan A in the Bloomberg administration’s stealth war on teen pregnancy.

Handouts of the “morning-after pill” to sexually active students have skyrocketed under an unpublicized project in which health centers in public schools offer girls a full menu of free birth-control drugs and devices, records obtained by The Post show.

Last September, the city revealed it had started giving out Plan B and other birth control in the nurses’ offices of 13 high schools. At the time, officials said 567 girls had gotten Plan B... But the birth-control blitz was much bigger than the city had acknowledged. About 40 separate “school-based health centers” doled out 12,721 doses of Plan B in 2011-12, up from 10,720 in 2010-11 and 5,039 in 2009-10, according to the newly released data.

...The revelations stunned Mona Davids, president of the NYC Parents Union, whose 14-year-old attends a Manhattan high school... “I’m in shock,” she said. “What gives the mayor the right to decide, without adequate notice, to give our children drugs that will impact their bodies and their psyches? He has purposely kept the public and parents in the dark with his agenda... “This was population control on blacks and Latinos without our knowledge,” she said.

Plan B, which can block pregnancy if taken up to 72 hours after sex, is just one weapon in the city Department of Health’s arsenal for its Reproductive Health Project, an internal report reveals... Besides “emergency contraception,” about 40 school-based clinics have dispensed prescriptions for birth-control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), hormone-delivering injections and Patch and NuvaRing — covering a total 93,569 monthly cycles through June 2012, the report says.

This pint-sized, would-be dictator must have some deadly serious psychological issues.

QOTD: ""I don't understand Iranian politics," he announced in perhaps his least-misspoken statement of the day. But the Iranians understand ours, which is why, in an amusing touch, the Foreign Ministry in Tehran has enthusiastically endorsed Hagel.

Fortunately, Iran is entirely peripheral to global affairs – it's not like Chad or the Solomon Islands or the other burning questions the great powers are currently wrestling with – so it would be entirely unreasonable to expect Hagel to understand anything much about what's going on over there. So what of his other, non-Iranian interests?

"There are a lot of things I don't know about," said Hagel. "If confirmed, I intend to know a lot more than I do."

He then denied that "I will be running anything." Don't let the fact that the Secretary of Defense presides over 40 percent of the entire planet's military spending confuse you. He's not really "running" a thing – or, as he was anxious to assure us, "I won't be in a policy-making position."

Really? So what's the job for, then? Just showing up at the office and the occasional black-tie NATO banquet? Most misspeakers loose off one round and then have to re-load, but Chuck Hagel is a big scary "military-style assault weapon" of a misspeaker, effortlessly peppering the Senate wainscoting for hours on end. Late in the day, after five o'clock, he pronounced definitively: "It doesn't matter what I think."" --Mark Steyn

HAHAHAHAHA: White House actually commanded people not to photoshop the Obama gun picture with predictable results

How can people not Photoshop the hilarious image of President Obama "doing skeet-shooting"?

That's what @FlyFidelity asks, posting this classic from FreakingNews.

Oh, and can you believe it? The White House really did command you peons not to Photoshop the image. With predictable results.

Oh, here's a classic from SooperMexican:

President Obama's Busy Day

Brad emailed us this graphic:

And notes, "Here is a picture from the AP of Obama on Aug 4th - look at the watch."

"Look at the watch he is wearing in the shooting pic... how many people change watches during the day from a golfing watch to a shooting watch?"

Verrry interesting.

DADDY LIKE: Mercedes to unveil Porsche 911-fighter, the SLC

Schwing!

...Car Magazine is reporting that the Porsche 911-fighting "Baby SLS" coupe could be on sale by 2015. Riding on a modified SLS AMG chassis, the smaller and lighter SLC could be priced in the sub-$100,000 price bracket.

We'd already heard that the new car would feature conventional doors (instead of SLS-like gullwing doors), but this report focuses on some of the possible powertrains Mercedes-Benz is likely to use. At launch, the SLC could offer a pair of V8-powered models – a 485-horsepower SLC and a 585-hp SLC S – both being powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. About a year after launch, a new V6 model could emerge giving the SLC an estimated 333 horsepower and its lowest price point.

It also sounds like the car's name hasn't been completely finalized as some people within Mercedes are favoring a return of the SLR name.

One can dream, can't one?

FOR REAL: White House Releases Photo of President Obama Doing "Skeet-Shooting All the Time"

Oh, my.

WHITE HOUSE RELEASES PHOTO OF OBAMA FIRING GUN

The White House has released a photo of President Barack Obama firing a gun, two days before he heads to Minnesota to discuss gun control.

...In a recent interview with The New Republic magazine, Obama said "yes" when asked if he has ever fired a gun. He said "we do skeet shooting all the time," except for his daughters, at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland...

Thanks to cub reporter Biff Spackle, this august journal had already published photographs proving President Obama's shooting prowess.

QOTD: "If you look at mass murders where suicidal people try to end their lives in the most infamous way possible–in Tucson, Virginia Tech, Newtown, Aurora–you have a very strong thread of mental illness running through that.

…So the long term solution is not just about background checks. It’s about why these people are on the streets in the first place. All of these killers could have been civilly committed under the civil commitment we had several decades ago. Those laws were changed, but… we [need to] move back to a more sensible position that strongly protects the due process rights of people against involuntary commitment, but also gets dangerous people off the streets." --David Kopel
