SOUNDING THE ALARM: Obama doing to the U.S. military what no enemy on Earth could do

Guest post by Alan Caruba

I began March with a look at the way President Obama is undermining the U.S. military and did not think I would have to return to this topic for a while. I was wrong.

A March 25 article in The Washington Times was titled “Obama to Kill Navy’s Tomahawk, Hellfire Missile Programs in Budget Decimation” and on March 21, The Wall Street Journal published a commentary, “America’s Incredible Shrinking Navy.” When you add those to The New York Times February 23 article, “Pentagon Plans to Shrink Army to Pre-World War II Level”, you’ve got sufficient reason to begin to realize something very ominous is occurring.

This concern is heightened by the way dozens of high ranking officers are, in the view of some observers, being purged. A number of retired generals are speaking out about it. One of them, retired Army Major General Paul Vallely has charged that Obama is “intentionally weakening and gutting our military and reducing us as a superpower, and anyone in the ranks who disagrees or speaks out is being purged.” Retired Army Major General Patrick Brady agrees saying, “There is no doubt he is intent on emasculating the military and will fire anyone who disagrees with him.”

The world, over the course of human civilization, has always been a dangerous place. Much of the history of mankind is a history of wars, large and small. In the last century the U.S. military was involved in two world wars, a Korean conflict, a war in Vietnam, and the Gulf War to drive out Hussein’s Iraqi forces after he invaded Kuwait.

The Russian seizure of Crimea in the wake of the protests that has left Ukraine in disarray has put all of Europe on edge and raised questions about the readiness of NATO. A look around the world sees China increasing its military strength, particularly at sea.

The Middle East to include much of northern Africa is a hotbed of turmoil. And, of course, Iran continues to contribute to it, aiding Syria’s regime along with the Russians, supporting Palestinian terror organizations that threaten Israel, while pursuing its own nuclear weapon capabilities.

QOTD: "Whatever the origins of the events in Ukraine, the United States is now engaged in a confrontation with Russia. The Russians believe that the United States was the prime mover behind regime change in Ukraine. At the very least, the Russians intend to reverse events in Ukraine. At most, the Russians have reached the conclusion that the United States intends to undermine Russia's power. They will resist. The United States has the option of declining confrontation, engaging in meaningless sanctions against individuals and allowing events to take their course. Alternatively, the United States can choose to engage and confront the Russians.

A failure to engage at this point would cause countries around Russia's periphery, from Estonia to Azerbaijan, to conclude that with the United States withdrawn and Europe fragmented, they must reach an accommodation with Russia. This will expand Russian power and open the door to Russian influence spreading on the European Peninsula itself. The United States has fought three wars (World War I, World War II and the Cold War) to prevent hegemonic domination of the region. Failure to engage would be a reversal of a century-old strategy." --George Friedman

SICK, DELUSIONAL OLD FOOL: Harry Reid Blames Russia's Invasion of Ukraine on... Republicans

Guest post by Investor's Business Daily

Politics: Harry Reid blames Russia's annexation of Crimea on Republicans who didn't act fast enough on a sanctions package. But he ignores Obama's appeasement as president and push when a senator to disarm Ukraine.

The Senate Majority Leader's latest claim is consistent with other utterances out of his parallel universe, including calling Stage IV cancer patients liars about Obamacare's collateral damage and asking why we'd want to save one child with cancer.

"Since a few Republicans blocked these important sanctions, Russian lawmakers voted to annex Crimea, and Russian forces have taken over Ukrainian military bases," Harry Reid said Monday as the Senate began debate on a package of sanctions and aid.

"It's impossible to know whether events would have unfolded differently if the United States had responded to Russian aggression with a strong, unified voice."

The man who makes Vice President Joe Biden look competent by comparison ignores the fact that since the House and Senate passed different versions, quick action on sanctions would have been impossible and that it was Reid and the Democrats who refused to bring up the House version as is.

The Senate version wasn't a clean bill, having attached provisions that would increase the power of emerging countries in the International Monetary Fund and shift some $63 billion from a crisis fund to a general account that Republicans feared would leave U.S. taxpayers on the hook for more foreign bailouts.

BUMMER FOR VOTE FRAUD DENIERS: 4 of 5 Americans Favor Requiring Proof of Citizenship to Vote

You can't get four of five Americans to agree what color the sky is, so this is strong evidence that the vast majority of citizens still love and respect the franchise.

A federal judge last week upheld the right of states to require proof of citizenship before allowing someone to register to vote. Voters continue to overwhelmingly support such a requirement.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 78% of Likely U.S. Voters believe everyone should be required to prove his or her citizenship before being allowed to register to vote. That’s up from 71% a year ago. Just 19% oppose that requirement. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Twenty-nine percent (29%) believe laws that require proof of citizenship before allowing voter registration discriminate against such voters. But more than twice as many (61%) say such laws do not discriminate, up three points from 58% who felt that way in March of last year. Ten percent (10%) are undecided.

I guess the one of the five who favored vote fraud was Al "Not So" Sharpton.

Political Smutmonger David Brock Decries Political Smutmongers

Guest post by D-Day

I have a new favorite word – smutmonger. After reading countless stories about the “recovered” Clinton smutmongerer David Brock today, I found it ironic that the one blasting smutmongers runs a super PAC with the sole mission of tracking candidates to smutmonger them. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised reporters have left that out of their reporting.

SHOT: Politico: David Brock blasts ‘political smutmongers’
Brock: “Call off the political smutmongers,” he said, according to a prepared copy of the speech released by his team. “…Give the American people the presidential campaign they deserve, one based on real issues and on the public record. Ask —‘is it relevant to someone’s performance in public office?’ —before attacking.”

CHASER: NYT: Trailing G.O.P. With Cameras, Seeking Gaffes

At 27, he is a full-time “tracker” for American Bridge 21st Century, a new Democratic organization that aims to record every handshake, every utterance by Republican candidates in 2011 and 2012, looking for gotcha moments that could derail political ambitions or provide fodder for television advertisements by liberal groups next year.

QOTD: "The issue on which Democrats are most vulnerable, and have the least room to maneuver, is school choice. Democrats are heavily in hock to the teachers’ unions, who see public schools as places to guarantee jobs for teachers, regardless of what that means for the education of students.

There are some charter schools and private schools that have low-income minority youngsters equaling or exceeding national norms, despite the many ghetto public schools where most students are nowhere close to meeting those norms. Because teachers’ unions oppose charter schools, most Democrats oppose them, including black Democrats up to and including President Barack Obama.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s recent cutback on funding for charter schools, and creating other obstacles for them, showed a calloused disregard for black youngsters, for whom a decent education is their one shot at a better life.

But did you hear any Republican say anything about it?" --Thomas Sowell

BECLOWNMENT COMPLETE: Matt Drudge Knows More About Obamacare Than White House, Leftist Media

Guest post by Investor's Business Daily

Health Reform: Despite White House claims no one has to pay ObamaCare's individual mandate tax until next year, a Web heavyweight points out that self-employed individuals file their estimated taxes this year for 2014.

In what could be the tweet heard around the world, Internet icon Matt Drudge tweeted at 11:09 a.m. Friday:

"Just paid the ObamaCare penalty for not 'getting covered' ... I'M CALLING IT A LIBERTY TAX!"

A mere 22 minutes later, White House spokesman Jesse Lee tweeted: "Flat lie, no fee for previous year."

Lee's tweet shows just how little the White House knows about business, particularly small business, and the self-employed individuals such as Matt Drudge who file as small businesses and who each year must not only settle up for the prior year by mid-April but must also pay their first-quarter estimated taxes for the current year.

The Obama administration's media sycophants were no better informed, with the Washington Post's Greg Sargent blogging by midafternoon:

A TIMELINE OF LAWLESSNESS IN PICTURES: Rewriting Obamacare, Over and Over Again

Guest post by Kelsey Harris and Amy Payne

Obamacare is now four years old. But unlike most 4-year-olds, it still can’t walk on its own. It’s been tripping and falling over itself for years.

Just in the last year, the Obama administration has delayed or changed so many parts of the law—not to mention the technical “glitches”—it’s tough to keep up. Bloomberg Businessweek looked at the law’s recent track record and inspired us to take a visual tour.

U.S. Tornado Map: 1950 to 2012

Now if I just had an overlay of mobile homes in the U.S. to compare this to...

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center website has historical data about tornadoes, and they've even plotted the data on a map...

...In addition to the tornado paths that have a beginning & ending coordinate, I also plot a single 'point' for the tornadoes that only have a beginning coordinate in the data (this fills-in a lot of points in Florida, for example).

I make the state borders gray, rather than black, to de-emphasize them -- the red tornado data is the most important thing, and should stand out the most.

Yet another reason to live in the Florida Keys.

It's hard to imagine receiving a worse text message than the one sent to the families of the 239 people aboard Malaysian Air flight 370.

Here's the text message that was sent to relatives (the Chinese translation you see here is generated by the user's phone)...

...The message came shortly before Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak told a packed press conference that data from Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch and the satellite company Inmarsat indicated that the airplane went down in a remote part of the Indian Ocean and that all aboard were presumed dead.

Even a postcard would have been more heartfelt than a text message, for heaven's sake.

LAWSUIT: Bill Clinton made multiple trips to fundraiser's private island where underage sex slaves were held

This appears to be part of a pattern. That is, a real "war on women" -- and girls -- waged by the impeached and disbarred William Jefferson Clinton.

A new lawsuit has revealed the extent of former President Clinton's friendship with a fundraiser who was later jailed for having sex with an underage prostitute.

Bill Clinton's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, who served time in 2008 for his illegal sexual partners, included up multiple trips to the onetime billionaire's private island in the Caribbean where underage girls were allegedly kept as sex slaves... the two men's friendship ... seems to have ended abruptly around the time of Epstein's arrest...

...Tales of orgies and young girls being shipped to the island, called Little St. James, have been revealed as part of an ongoing lawsuit between Epstein and his former lawyers Scott Rothstein and Bradley Edwards...

...Flight logs pinpoint Clinton's trips on Epstein's jet between the years 2002 and 2005, while he was working on his philanthropic post-presidential career and while his wife Hillary was a Senator for their adopted state of New York...

...[An] unidentified woman [said] how orgies were a regular occurrence and she recalled two young girls from New York who were always seen around the five-house compound but their personal backstories were never revealed.

At least one woman on the compound was there unwillingly, as the suit identifies a woman as Jane Doe 102. She 'was forced to live as one of Epstein's underage sex slaves for years and was forced to have sex with... politicians, businessmen, royalty, academicians, etc,' the lawsuit says...

Epstein's sexual exploits have been documented since 2005, when a woman in Palm Beach contacted police saying that her 14-year-old daughter had been paid $300 to massage him and then have sex... The claim prompted a nearly year-long investigation that led to the eventual charge of soliciting prostitution which came as part of a plea deal. He spent 13 months of a 18-month sentence in jail and remains a registered sex offender.

Maybe this news will push the execrable Woman's Day magazine to honor Clinton with another award. Perhaps a "Little Blue Dress" trophy?

DELUSIONAL NANCY PELOSI: Obamacare will be a "political winner" for Democrats in 2014

Guest post by Israel Ortega

Another day means another poll that is sure to give the President and some members of Congress heartburn. According to a new poll by the Pew Research Center, opposition to the President’s signature legislative achievement remains high. The survey, as reported by The Hill, found that 53 percent disapprove of Obamacare, compared with 41 percent who approve.

Given such opposition, one would think twice about describing the law as a “political winner,” but that’s exactly how House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) sees it. Her remarks after the jump are illustrative of the vast disconnect between the will of the people and Congress and may help explain why “one in three registered voters in the NBC-WSJ poll said that their vote for Congress this fall will be intended to signal opposition to President Obama.”

Unfortunately, for Pelosi, four years after Congress passed Obamacare to find out what’s in it, the American people are learning that many can’t really keep their health insurance or doctor—and that the promise that health insurance premiums would go down was also off the mark.

Pelosi, however, would rather us not worry about those side effects and instead concern ourselves with calling the law by her preferred name, “the Affordable Care Act,” and not Obamacare, as she was quick to correct an unsuspecting journalist.

And now... some censored news from the Democrat Utopia of Venezuela

I'm so confused: we're not seeing any of this on "mainstream" media.

Miami Herald: 3 more deaths in Venezuela as both sides march

Obama administration propagandist and WaPo "reporter" Juliet Eilperin chose... poorly

If you missed the kerfuffle that's erupted between Power Line's John Hinderaker and the execrable Washington Post's propaganda machine, well, check this out.

On Thursday, the Washington Post published an article by Steven Mufson and Juliet Eilperin titled “The biggest lease holder in Canada’s oil sands isn’t Exxon Mobil or Chevron. It’s the Koch brothers.” ... So Thursday evening, I wrote about the Post article here. I pointed out that Koch is not, in fact, the largest leaser of tar sands land; that Koch will not be a user of the pipeline if it is built; and that construction of the Keystone Pipeline would actually be harmful to Koch’s economic interests, which is why Koch has never taken a position on the pipeline’s construction. The Keystone Pipeline, in short, has nothing whatsoever to do with the Koch brothers.

My post garnered a great deal of attention, and Mufson and Eilperin undertook to respond to it here... [their] response attempted to explain “Why we wrote about the Koch Industries [sic] and its leases in Canada’s oil sands.” Good question! What’s the answer?

The Powerline article itself, and its tone, is strong evidence that issues surrounding the Koch brothers’ political and business interests will stir and inflame public debate in this election year. That’s why we wrote the piece.

So in the Post’s view, it is acceptable to publish articles that are both literally false (Koch is the largest tar sands leaseholder) and massively misleading (the Keystone Pipeline is all about Koch Industries), if by doing so the paper can “stir and inflame public debate in this election year?” I can’t top Jonah Goldberg’s comment on that howler:

By this logic any unfair attack posing as reporting is worthwhile when people try to correct the record. Why not just have at it and accuse the Kochs of killing JFK or hiding the Malaysian airplane? The resulting criticism would once again provide “strong evidence that issues surrounding the Koch brothers’ political and business interests will stir and inflame public debate in this election year.”

Let me offer an alternative explanation of why the Washington Post published their Keystone/Koch smear: 1) The Washington Post in general, and Mufson and Eilperin in particular, are agents of the Left, the environmental movement and the Democratic Party. 2) The Keystone Pipeline is a problem for the Democratic Party because 60% of voters want the pipeline built, while the party’s left-wing base insists that it not be approved. 3) The Keystone Pipeline is popular because it would broadly benefit the American people by creating large numbers of jobs, making gasoline more plentiful and bringing down the cost of energy. 4) Therefore, the Democratic Party tries to distract from the real issues surrounding the pipeline by claiming, falsely, that its proponents are merely tools of the billionaire Koch brothers–who, in fact, have nothing to do with Keystone one way or the other. 5) The Post published its article to assist the Democratic Party with its anti-Keystone talking points.

WELL, THAT MAKES SENSE: Nancy Pelosi to Accept Award Named After KKK Advocate and Race Eugenicist

Just when you think the Democrat Party has hit rock bottom, they break out the jackhammer and start digging a new sub-basement:

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PP) announced that House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, an alleged Roman Catholic, will be given “the Margaret Sanger Award, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of her leadership, excellence, and outstanding contributions to the reproductive health and rights movement over the course of her career,” according to a Planned Parenthood website posting...

Margaret Sanger was hardly the woman's rights hero that the modern Left markets. In fact, she was an advocate for the Ku Klux Klan and a zealot for culling out "inferior" races from the nation's gene pool.

Sanger wanted a new and improved race: ‘[We should] apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is tainted, or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.’

Then there was the April 1932 Birth Control Review, p. 108[, in which she stated]: Birth control must lead ultimately to a cleaner race.

QOTD: "Russia is preparing the announcement of the "Holy Grail" energy deal with none other than China, a move which would send geopolitical shockwaves around the world and bind the two nations in a commodity-backed axis...

...while the biggest geopolitical tectonic shift since the Cold War accelerates with the inevitable firming of the "Asian Axis", the West monetizes its debt, revels in the paper wealth created from an all time high manipulated stock market while at the same time trying to explain why 6.5% unemployment is really indicative of a weak economy, blames the weather for every disappointing economic data point, and every single person is transfixed with finding a missing airplane." --Tyler Durden
