NET NEUTRALITY: Which set of crony capitalists do YOU prefer?

Net neutrality is not the simple "government intervention versus laissez-faire" debate so depicted by both Republicans and Democrats. Net neutrality, once you peel the onion, is really a dog-eat-dog battle between the incumbent cable/telephone monopolies (often referred to as "the duopoly") and Internet application providers, ranging from Google to the smallest start-ups.

Put simply, net neutrality pits one set of crony capitalists against another.

The question Americans need to ask is: which crony capitalists benefit consumers more: a second-generation Ma Bell monopoly or the entire ecosystem of Internet start-ups, the list of which would require an Access database to track.

In fact, net neutrality really involves a couple of fairly simple questions that require a deeper analysis than the 12-second soundbite that today's consumers often demand.

Should the cable-telephone duopoly be permitted to speed up and slow down the Internet traffic of different application providers in order to extract more revenue? Or should they instead be required to ask consumers to pay for faster bandwidth in an application-agnostic way?

The crony capitalists on the cable-telephone side insist that the government let them do what they want to application providers. This would allow Comcast, for instance, to slow down Netflix delivery to consumers so that either the video provider pays extra fees... or else. Further, Comcast could launch its own competitive video service while degrading Netflix.

Conversely, the crony capitalists among the Internet application providers -- from Google to Lyft -- want the government to ensure a level playing field. They believe that the likes of Comcast should not be allowed to pick-and-choose winners and losers; consumers should.

This begs the question:

Is Internet service a utility, like energy, water or sewer lines?

Given heavy lobbying by the duopoly at the local level, most American consumers have only one choice when it comes to high-speed Internet access. A relatively small percentage of households, even those in heavily populated areas, have only two distinct choices for Internet access.

The duopoly asserts that cable and telephone companies are simple, private entities and should not be regulated in regards to Internet traffic.

Alternatively, the Internet application community contends that Internet pipes are indeed a utility and deserve similar treatment.

What is the duopoly really after?

High Crimes and Climate Grifters

By Alan Caruba

One of the lesser known attempts to prove that renewable energy, wind and solar power, can replace traditional energy sources--coal, oil, and natural gas--just went belly up. It occured in much the same way current wind and solar companies depend on tapping the taxpayer for government subsidies in order to stay in business. Google’s Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal initiative began in 2007 and shut down without fanfare just four years later.

Two members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Ross Koningstein and David Fork, worked on the project. Both men have excellent credentials in aerospace engineering and applied physics, respectively, but neither had a clue about climatology. Expertise in one field rarely translates to another unless it is closely allied.

At the start of the project "we shared the attitude of many stalwart environmentalists. We felt that with steady improvements to today's renewable energy technologies, our society could stave off catastrophic climate change. We now know that to be a false hope, but that doesn't mean the planet is doomed."

Environmentalists start off with several thoroughly incorrect beliefs that are not supported by science. The first is that climate change has anything to do with human activity such as carbon dioxide and other so-called “greenhouse gases.”

But the Earth is not a greenhouse. It is always in the process of absorbing and discharging heat via the atmosphere and the oceans. If it retained heat all life on Earth would die. Even after a hot summer’s day, the air will cool at night. Deserts, too, are often cooler at night. As for carbon dioxide, it is a trace gas in the atmosphere at barely 0.04%, but it is also the gas which all vegetation requires. In turn, vegetation gives off oxygen while we humans and other animals exhale carbon dioxide.

GRIM, UNPATRIOTIC MILESTONE: National Debt Hits $18 Trillion

Remember when then-Senator Obama said that adding $4 trillion to the national debt was "irresponsible" and "unpatriotic"?

Good times, good times.

That was when the national debt was $9.5 trillion.

It recently hit $18 trillion.

According to CBS News, Obama has presided over "the largest increase" in the national debt "to date under any U.S. president."

The U.S. Department of the Treasury reports that the debt under President Obama has grown nearly $7.5 trillion -- and counting.

In 2012, the then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, characterized the debt as "single biggest threat to America's national security."

SENATOR SESSIONS: Is the Republican Party Going to Keep Its Promise to Fight Amnesty or Not?

By Sara Noble

The following statement is from Sen. Jeff Sessions‘ website. Judging from his statement, it appears the new GOP draft on amnesty rejects pretty much nothing that Obama is demanding.

It’s all okay with the GOP – work permits, Social Security, Medicare, all of it is okay.

The fact that Congress rejected this five times and that Obama’s actions are illegal seems to be eluding the GOP. The fact that they were elected to stop Obama also seems to have eluded the GOP.

The GOP seem to think the worst thing in the world is to allow Obama to close the government down since he and the media will blame the GOP. It would be so terrible that they will let Obama do anything he wants to avoid it.

RANSOM FOR BOWE BERGDAHL? No Straight Answers Available From the Most Transparent Administration Ever

By Investor's Business Daily

Oversight: A House Armed Services Committee member asks for a probe into reports that money was paid in a failed attempt to ransom alleged deserter Bowe Bergdahl. And where's that Bergdahl investigation report, anyway?

Back on Oct. 16 we noted that the Pentagon had completed its investigation into Sgt. Bergdahl's abandonment of his Afghan post. But the report by Brig. Gen. Kenneth Dahl would not be released, according to an Army spokesman, until the end of a review process that was likely to be conveniently lengthy, lasting at least until after the midterm elections.

It has now been over six months since Bergdahl's May 14 release in exchange for five top Taliban commanders and a month since the administration's electoral thumping. Yet the report has still not been made public.

It presumably contains a conclusion on whether Bergdahl officially deserted and recommended punishment for any offense. It might also deal with reports of a botched cash ransom attempt.

As we noted in June, soon after his May release, Bergdahl was believed to have been held by the militant Haqqani network in the tribal area of Pakistan's northwest frontier on the Afghan border. He was picked up in eastern Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border, by a Navy SEAL team.

The Haqqani network, while designated a terrorist organization, has been described by best-selling author Brad Thor as "80% Tony Soprano and 20% al-Qaida" — a group more interested in cash than a swap of prisoners that would benefit the Taliban.

FASTER, PLEASE: Another City Forced to Obey the Bill of Rights

By Dean Weingarten

Park City, Utah, officials were the latest in a series of local governments that have been forced to respect the Constitution by the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF).   SAF has run up an impressive number of legal wins to protect second amendment rights.   It has become the ACLU of the gun culture.

In the Park City case, the city had adopted local laws in direct violation of the second amendment and Utah state preemption law.

The city law prohibited all use and possession of firearms; all carrying of concealed weapons; carrying of loaded guns inside a vehicle; showing a gun in an angry or threatening manner (no exceptions for justified use of force); and using a gun in a fight.

A city hall attorney, Tricia Lake, was clear about the illegality of the city's law.  From parkrecord.com:

IT'S COME TO THIS: "Surviving Mob Attacks on Your Vehicle"

Thanks, Obama!

Some helpful tips from Greg Ellifritz at Active Response Training, excerpted here:

2) You can’t just run people over if they are in the road. The safest thing to do in a situation like this is to keep moving, bumping people out of the way with your car. Unfortunately, that isn’t legal. It’s considered vehicular assault. Even if people are illegally blocking the road, you will likely go to jail if you run them down absent a legitimate threat to your life. See why awareness is so important? Getting away from the kill zone both keeps you safe and out of jail.

3) The situation changes, however, once the rioters attack you or your vehicle. With your vehicle surrounded in a manner that you can’t escape and your attackers being trying to burn your car, flip it over, or drag you out, it is reasonable to assume that you will suffer serious injury or death. That’s when you can start striking people with your car. Don’t get out and shoot. You will quickly be overwhelmed and your gun will be taken from you. Instead, accelerate steadily and forcefully, driving away from the surrounding rioters. Steady movement is the key. Hitting folks too hard can disable your vehicle. As John suggests, use your vehicle to push people out of the way rather than striking them...

As they say on the real blogs, read the whole thing.

2,500 "Lost" IRS Emails Point to Lawbreakers in the White House

By Investor's Business Daily

Scandal: Leaking taxpayer information to the White House isn't new, just as the email shell game in the IRS fiasco no longer shocks. But the discovery of data "lost" on backup tapes may expose the extent of administration guilt.

We recently noted how former White House senior economics adviser Austan Goolsbee had been identified as the official who had told reporters "on background" that the Koch brothers "do not pay corporate income tax" through their company, Koch Industries.

Goolsbee could not have made his claim without access to the Kochs' private tax data, something a White House official is not supposed to have.

We've also noted peculiarities in redacted emails provided by the IRS to Rep. Darrell Issa's House Oversight and Government Reform Committee between Sarah Hall Ingram, who served as commissioner of the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division from 2009 to 2012, and White House officials, including health policy adviser Ellen Montz and Jeanne Lambrew, deputy assistant to the president for health policy.

Some of the redactions were marked "6103," referring to private taxpayer information.

"So it was OK for (a) political White House to get the un-redacted version from the same entity that targeted groups who came into existence because they opposed the Affordable Care Act, but Congress can't get it?" Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, pointedly asked Ingram, who went on to run the IRS office responsible for enforcing ObamaCare. "That's unbelievable."

QOTD: "It is important to understand that neither the executive amnesty scam nor the bogus outrage over Ferguson actually had anything to with race per se. Obama and his gang are Marxists. This was always about class. The Obama coalition is not the traditional Democrat coalition. It is primarily a class coalition. It is the Democrat Party base and nothing more, made up of rich/academic upper class whites, the unionized government hack sub-class, and lower class welfare recipients. When it won in 2008 and 2012, the coalition added just enough others to push it over the top. But now, those others – primarily middle and working class people employed in the private sector – are fleeing to the GOP. And those were the people Hillary was counting on supply enough votes to win.

...Amnesty was never about Hispanics. It was about creating a permanent poor underclass to be mined for votes. Ferguson wasn’t about the nonexistent phenomena of white cops shooting unarmed black gentle giant college students for no particular reason. It was about keeping core constituents angry while distracting them from the five million job competitors The One just imported.

If sacrificing the life of some working stiff flatfoot from flyover country like Darren Wilson was the price, Obama and crew were happy to pay it. Like all those outside the base, he is expendable." --Kurt Schlichter

10 Signs That the Ferguson Protests Could Signal the Start of a Communist Revolution In America

By Michael Snyder

The far left is rising in America, and radical communists are being drawn to Ferguson protests all over the nation like moths to a flame. So could Ferguson be the spark that sets off a communist revolution in America? Certainly I am not saying that everyone involved in the Ferguson protests is a communist. That is not true at all. In fact, communists and other far left groups only make up a minority of the protesters. But they have repeatedly been at the forefront of the violence, and they are taking advantage of the anger and frustration caused by the death of Michael Brown to promote their far left radical ideologies. Sadly, they are finding a receptive audience – especially among young people in our poor and disadvantaged communities. Even though Republicans did very well in the last election, survey after survey has shown that our young adults continue to move to the left. For example, one survey taken a few years ago found that 49 percent of all Americans in the 18 to 29-year-old age range have a positive reaction to the word “socialism”. The same forces that fueled Occupy Wall Street are now finding fertile ground in these new protests. So what does all of this mean for the future of our nation? The following are 10 signs that Ferguson could be the start of a communist revolution in America…

#1 Communist protest banners have been prominently displayed at protests in Ferguson, in New York City and elsewhere around the nation.

#2 Flyers declaring that Darren Wilson is wanted “for racist murder” are being distributed by communist groups in Ferguson. In fact, the website address for the “Revolutionary Communist Progressive Labor Party” is right on the flyers.

#3 There were reports that violent communist activists from Chicago were brought into Ferguson by bus last August with the intention of stirring up as much trouble as possible…

KRUGMAN AND ROGOFF: America's Financial Terrorists Go on Tour

By David Stockman

Here are a couple of reasons why Keynesian economists are truly a menace in today’s bubble ridden and debt-impaled world. It seems that both Harvard’s Kenneth Rogoff and Princeton’s Paul Krugman are on the global advice circuit, peddling what amounts to sheer snake oil to desperate politicians and policy-makers who have already buried themselves—-so far to no avail—-in unprecedented waves of fiscal and monetary “stimulus”.

But never mind. The professors have a three part solution, and its more, more……and moar! To make room for more monetary stimulus after six-years at the zero bound, therefore, Professor Rogoff has a truly juvenile solution. Namely, to abolish cash. That’s right, this Harvard windbag proposes to confiscate your kids’ piggy bank and any green stuff that may be left in your wallet.

Meanwhile, Krugman has made a quick circuit through Tokyo, where he apparently was instrumental in convincing Japan’s prime minister to cancel the next installment of the consumption tax increase—a move that was utterly necessary in order to stem the nation’s massive flow of red ink. But why not spend a few more years adding to Japan’s staggering debt burden, which is already at 230% of GDP and rising inexorably in a nation that is fast becoming the world’s foremost retirement colony? After all, Professor Rogoff has now perfected a scheme which will allow central banks to monetize all the debt that even the most profligate government can possibly issue.

PRESIDENT JARRETT: "Senior Adviser" Reportedly Calling All the Shots, Including Those In Ferguson

For those wondering how Barack Obama -- a man seemingly engaged full-time campaigning, fundraising, and rabble-rousing -- could also have the bandwidth to weaken America both at home and abroad, the answer is really quite simple.

The leader of the free world is actually a woman named Valerie Jarrett, a longtime crony of Barack and Michelle Obama, who appears to call all of the shots in the Oval Office.

In the White House, Jarrett has been linked to a wide variety of scandals and other policy debacles.

There are credible reports that Jarrett blocked the attack on Osama Bin Laden's compound on three separate occasions.

Similar reports indicate that she gave the "stand down" order to would-be rescuers in Benghazi on 9/11/2012.

In 2012, she was reported to have led Obama's "secret negotiations" with Iran's Mullahs. Subsequent accounts depicted Jarrett as working with Iran's nuclear experts to ensure the Islamic Republic could continue on its march to build nuclear weapons.

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal's Kim Strassel summarized the ramifications of Jarrett's litany of policy failures in stark terms: everyone but her is expendable.

Among those thrown under Jarrett's bus: Christina Romer, Jim Jones, Bill Daley, Leon Panetta, Kathleen Sebelius, Rahm Emanuel, Austan Goolsbee, Larry Summers, Peter Orszag, Vivek Kundra, Eric Shinseki, Keith Alexander, James Clapper and, most recently, Chuck Hagel. Hagel's ostensible replacement, Michèle Flournoy, turned down the opportunity because she didn't "want to be a doormat".

As Strassel asks:

Who would want to work for a boss whose experiments in big government all but guarantee their reputation will be ruined in the aftermath of a bureaucratic collapse? ... And who wants to work for a boss who doesn’t have your back? ... Is it possible to haveany other experience working for Mr. Obama—a boss who doesn’t listen, views everything politically, always thinks he’s right, and whose policies are a recipe for a lost reputation?

Which brings us at last to the Democrats' latest haven for race-baiting, Ferguson.

Jarrett was in contact with Missouri's Governor Nixon in the run-up to the announcement of the Grand Jury's decision.

While Nixon denied the administration pressured him to resist activating the National Guard to put down the violent protests, the White House has admitted that Jarrett was in close contact with the governor during the first 24 hours of violent protests.

Nixon came under heavy criticism for failing to deploy the National Guard to quash the protests, which resulted in massive property damage. It now would seem that Jarrett had a hand in that decision as well.

And who is our crypto-president?

In 2008, The Boston Globe exposed Jarrett's background as the failed chief executive of The Habitat Company, which managed government-subsidized housing complexes in Chicago from 2001 until 2006. Her leadership, if you can call it that, resulted in violations so egregious that many units were deemed "uninhabitable" and eventually the federal government was forced to seize the properties.

That year, Judicial Watch named Jarrett to its "Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians" list for her ties to the failed housing complexes and "other shady real estate scandals".

Jarrett's family background is equally troubling. Her father-in-law was a card-carrying Communist who worked with Obama's mentor, Frank Marshall Davis.

Jarrett's grandfather Robert Taylor is reported to have served in a leadership role for the Soviet Union's American front group during World War II, when Stalin was still allied with the Third Reich. Taylor's "American Peace Mobilization" was a Soviet initiative designed to keep America out of the war so that Hitler and Stalin could divvy up Europe and Asia virtually unopposed.

So, in short, the first female President is a hard-core Leftist with an abysmal track record for decision-making, a horrifically failed tenure as a chief executive, a stunning inability to learn, and a steely refusal to take responsibilities for her many failures.

But she's the president and you're not.

Which explains why Jarrett -- against all historic precedent -- was given a Secret Service detail for protection.

QOTD: "“Doormat” has been the job description for pretty much every Obama employee. The president bragged in 2008 that he would assemble in his cabinet a “Team of Rivals.” What he failed to explain to any of the poor saps is that they’d be window dressing for a Team of Select Brilliant Political Types Who Already Had All the Answers: namely, himself and the Valerie Jarretts and David Axelrods of the White House.

...The experienced Bill Daley came in 2011 as the chief of staff tasked with repairing Mr. Obama’s relations with the business community. He left a year later, having been stripped of many duties and trashed by the White House to the press. The sage Leon Panetta stepped up as defense secretary in 2011; he too left after 20 months of getting his head patted. The folks who look smartest now are those who fled early, while the fleeing was still relatively good—Rahm Emanuel, Austan Goolsbee, Larry Summers, Peter Orszag, Vivek Kundra.

Who would want to work for a boss who micromanages everything but takes no responsibility when things don’t work out? This president’s playbook for controversy: Deny knowledge, blame subordinates." --Kimberley A. Strassel

No Longer a Nation of Laws

By Richard Larsen

“Congress will not act, so I will,” warned President Obama over the past few weeks as he projected the possibility of acting unilaterally on the issue of illegal immigration. And act, he did.

In an announcement Thursday evening, the President granted amnesty to millions of those who have entered the country illegally. Those granted amnesty, are those who have been in the country for at least five years, have children who are citizens or legal residents, who pass a criminal background check, and are willing to pay taxes and register with the government. The impact could include as many as 6 million people.

The elements of his plan have merit, but to be legal, the proposal must be enacted legislatively, which he could have done easily when his party controlled both chambers of congress during his first term. What he proposes to do is to rewrite U.S. immigration law without the Constitutional or statutory authority to do so.

His actions stand in stark contrast to what he has been saying over the past six years. On March 28, 2011 in a Univision appearance, he declared, “For me to simply through executive order ignore those congressional mandates, would not conform to my appropriate role as president.”

On July 25, 2011, he stated, “I know some people want me to bypass congress and change the laws on my own. But that’s not the way our system works.”

On November 25, 2013, he declared, “If in fact I could solve all these problems without passing laws in congress, then I would do so. But we’re also a nation of laws.”

FERGUSON'S NATALIE DUBOSE: A Victim of "Social Justice"

By Investor's Business Daily

Starting Over: A black woman who sold cake at flea markets to save enough money to open her own shop saw it vandalized and looted by those who claim white cops are the major problem facing black America.

Natalie Dubose's Ferguson, Mo., business, Cakes & More, barely survived the arson, rioting and looting that followed a grand jury's not indicting officer Darren Wilson in the shooting of Michael Brown. Her tears then turned to sweat as she struggled to fill Thanksgiving cake orders just as she labored to build her business from the ground up.

President Obama once famously told people such as Dubose that she "didn't build that," and that she was the mere beneficiary of a benevolent government and its social engineering.

Well, she did build that, and no one from the government helped her bake her cakes or rebuild her business after rioters smashed one of two large windows and damaged her baking equipment.

"If I can't open my doors in the morning, I can't feed my kids in the evening," Dubois told CNN over the weekend and before the Monday verdict and the subsequent rioting.

"Just don't burn my shop down, don't destroy it," she pleaded before looters decided to "protest" the grand jury's decision not to indict Wilson, who confronted Brown after a strong-armed robbery of Ferguson Market & Liquors.
