A Critique of the GOP's New 'Pledge to America': Dudes. It's, Like, 20 Pages Too Long. I've Got the One-Page Version Right Here.
I won't be quite as harsh on the GOP's magnum opus as RedState's Erick Erickson, who calls it "the worst thing to come out of Washington since George McClellan."
Erick must have blocked out DC's distinguished Mayor Marion Berry.
But his point -- that the GOP's effort is mostly "dreck" -- is valid. Washington's so freaking broken that the usual platitudes and rhetoric can't and won't suffice.
21 pages? How about starting with two words: THE CONSTITUTION?
To be sure, the Constitution is paid lip service in the GOP's pledge. And a few (unfortunately, too few) stats are powerful. For example: did you know that there are 2,050 federal assistance programs?
And consider this sentence, notwithstanding the "sic":
But there's also plenty of fluff, with anecdotes and quotes and lengthy paragraphs that morph into meaningless mush.
Consider the summary of the GOP pledge:
• We will fight to ensure transparency and accountability in Congress and throughout government. [Platitude]
• We will continue to fight the growth of government and oppose new stimulus spending that only puts our nation further in debt. [Platitude]
• We will fight efforts to fund the costly new health care law. [Feh]
• We will fight to increase access to domestic energy sources and oppose attempts to impose a national “cap and trade” energy tax. [Okay, barely]
• We will fight for the rights of workers and oppose “card check” schemes that put union bosses before individuals’ right to a secret ballot. [Okay, barely]
• We will fight efforts to use a national crisis for political gain. [I have no idea what this means]
Reps. Boehner, Cantor, Ryan and other members of the GOP: you could have come to me for the one-page pledge. It would read as follows:
It really is just that simple.
We are fighting to prevent the destruction of the American way -- and the remedy is simple. It's been right in front of our faces the whole time.
Somewhere, James Madison and John Adams are looking down on us with expectant gleams in their eyes.

The GOP Pledge to America
We pledge that every action we take will be gauged by the answer to a single question: Does it show fidelity to the Constitution, our highest law?
With that as our guide, we solemnly pledge the following as our first actions:
• We will repeal the Democrat health care bill and, if vetoed by the President, will de-fund every aspect of that bill until such time as the American people have input into a sensible health care reform process.
• We will slash the size of the federal government bureaucracies (Commerce, Education, Energy, the EPA, Labor, etc.) by 20% in 2011 with a goal of reducing each by 50% over the next three years, thereby saving hundreds of billions of dollars.
• We will secure the border with physical fencing suitable to repel drug smugglers, human smugglers, and terrorists, while encouraging legal immigration and enforcement of the law.
• We will confront the entitlement crisis -- Social Security and Medicare -- by preserving benefits for those who depend upon them and moving to privatized options for younger workers. Anything less condemns future generations to mountains of debt and economic catastrophe.
• We will strengthen our armed forces, space and missile defense programs to retain our unparalleled superpower status.
• We will begin the process of paying down our debts, spending within our means every year.
• We will ban public sector unions, which exist solely to wage war against the taxpayers who fund their operations.Put simply: we intend to adhere to a strict interpretation of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Faith, Family, and the Founding. That is our creed.
And for your support and with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.
It really is just that simple.
We are fighting to prevent the destruction of the American way -- and the remedy is simple. It's been right in front of our faces the whole time.
Somewhere, James Madison and John Adams are looking down on us with expectant gleams in their eyes.

Great Dabblers Throughout History
You say Christine O'Donnell dabbled into high school witchcraft? Really?

Oh, yes. The naysayers are right. She's unelectable.

I need some help: what's the best question to ask a leftist Democrat at a town hall meeting?
I've got an opportunity to infiltrate a town hall meeting next week. Although the meeting is supposed to be hush-hush -- to ensure that only drones attend -- I got a heads-up from a friend in city government.

So this hack, I mean, the incumbent Democrat representative, is a hard-core leftist. She's 100% supportive of the Pelosi-Obama-Reid agenda. To enter the meeting hall, I intend to disguise myself as a Democrat. In other words, I'll dress like a tenured professor, paint a goofy grin on my face, don a Che t-shirt, and wear an SEIU4Life hat.
Once I'm in, Doctor Jay will videotape my question to her. But here's where I need some help. I could use a piercing, intimidating question that can only get her in trouble with the voters.
Suggestions appreciated.

Would anyone in legacy media be upset if Christine O'Donnell admitted that, decades ago, she'd dabbled in Islamic Sharia law?
Seriously.Would Bill Maher utter a freaking word if Ms. O'Donnell admitted that once, in high school, she'd dabbled with an extremist form of Islam?
No. Because he's a punk. Yes, I said it. He's a punk.
Would the Washington Post raise a ruckus?
No, because they're punks too.
But there's no double standard.
And, last time I checked, there haven't been many stonings, floggings and suicide bombings by Wiccans.

We disclose academic ignorance
The Bad writes:
Leftists. If they weren't in power, they'd be employable only as comic relief. Like court jesters.
Hey Doug - I have attached a screenshot of a Facebook encounter with a left-of-Marx friend of mine. Names have been blocked in red for obvious reasons and his FB image has been replaced with my own design to protect his dumb ass. Nonetheless, I thought it was interesting and figured you might see what I see in terms of liberals and their ignorance to what their "leaders" are up to. Hugo is supposedly an intelligent liberal who is active politically and (gasp) works in academia.

December 2009 and a possible rationale for Karl Rove's vicious attack on Christine O'Donnell
Is there a rational explanation for Karl Rove's vicious, unmanly and -- frankly -- outrageous attack on Christine O'Donnell?
On Tuesday, the night of Rove's explosion, The Freedomist reported that he had earlier been heavily invested in Mike Castle's campaign.
While Rove's possible affiliation with Castle's campaign hasn't yet been disclosed, I did locate an article that may help shed some more light on the issue.
Mr. Peabody, set the wayback machine to December 2009 and fetch me a copy of the Wall Street Journal while you're at it:
In other words, Rove was shilling for some of the more egregious liberal Republicans last December, especially Castle. A primary challenge by more conservative GOP candidates hadn't even been contemplated by Rove.
Was he a paid operative? Or did he just back the wrong horse, calling his credentials as the all-knowing, all-seeing 'architect' in doubt? Was the attack simply about diminished stature -- whether as a paid consultant or as an oracle for Fox?
That mental exercise is best left to the reader, but suffice it to say that his behavior will only help enrage and energize the conservative base. It's not complicated, Karl: it's only the freaking Constitution, to which neither you, Castle nor the rest of the entrenched Republican establishment seem to give a moment's thought.
That is why we're out to take over the GOP and throw all of the bums out, no matter their party affiliation.
See, that's not too hard to understand, is it, Karl?
Update: Michelle Malkin Rips Karl Rove a New One for His 'Vicious' Attacks on Christine O’Donnell.
On Tuesday, the night of Rove's explosion, The Freedomist reported that he had earlier been heavily invested in Mike Castle's campaign.
Sources at the Christine O’Donnell victory party revealed to The Freedomist that in December of last year Karl Rove met with Tea Party leaders in Dover, Delaware trying to get them to cut a 'deal' in which they would leave Mike Castle alone and NOT support O’Donnell.
The Freedomist has also learned that Rove was allegedly acting as an operative, although in what capacity it is not known, even as he is playing the role of a political analyst on Fox New in a fair and balanced way...

Can Republicans Retake the Senate in 2010?
Probably not, but their candidate recruitment so far has been stellar.
By KARL ROVE
...One feature giving Republicans an edge is that several senate seats are up for grabs because the politicians who were elected to fill them are now serving in the Obama administration. This includes seats formerly held by Mr. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden... Rep. Mark Kirk is a strong candidate to pick up Mr. Obama's old seat in Illinois. Rep. Mike Castle, a popular former governor, could pick up Mr. Biden's former seat in Delaware...
In other words, Rove was shilling for some of the more egregious liberal Republicans last December, especially Castle. A primary challenge by more conservative GOP candidates hadn't even been contemplated by Rove.

GTFO?
Dan from New York:
Only overwhelming with our numbers will work.
Remember: "If it's not close, they can't cheat."
"... it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
-- Senator Barack Hussein Obama, San Francisco Fundraiser, 2008
"They say I'm dumb. Yes, I'm dumb. I'm so dumb I got two Lincoln Continentals, that's how damn dumb I am!"
-- Lenny Bruce send up of an Evangelical preacher in the brilliant Religions Inc. (1958)
It's a common trait of political elites to look down their noses at those who cling to their guns and religion and characterize it as a disorder. This year, though, it's proving to be a big mistake.
Signs continue to build that the state-run media's attempt to demonize the Tea Party movement has flopped on Main Street, if not Broadway. It was always about preaching to the perverted anyway and, thanks to Barack Hussein Obama, their numbers are dwindling rapidly. The Republicans' ugly knee-jerk reaction to the Tea Party challenge is fading too, now that the blue blazer conservatives have been mugged by the bumpkins and the party's operatives are beginning to see the light (of victory).
It's entirely possible the great wave of hysteria that brought the Obamatons to power will utterly recede only two years after it inundated the land. If it does, it will be an affirmation of the underlying health and restorative powers of America's instincts and common sense.
Yet, as nice as that sounds, don't take it for granted. Complacency is not an option. There's still almost two months to go and only an all-out effort from here to the finish line will bring success. Obama will not go without a fight, and men like him seldom fight fair.
Only overwhelming with our numbers will work.
Remember: "If it's not close, they can't cheat."

Pond Scum lobby worried that Harry Reid is giving it a bad name
Look up 'pond scum' in the dictionary and you may see the man who is attempting to tie amnesty for illegal aliens to a defense appropriations bill.
That's right: while we have men and women on the battlefield, a Democrat is once again playing politics with bullets, body armor and MREs.
This Democrat is trying to attach stealth amnesty -- that will encourage illegal immigration -- to a defense appropriations bill.
This Democrat is, for lack of a better term, pond scum.
What is "The DREAM Act"? You'll love this:
At what point can we stop questioning the Democrat leadership's patriotism and simply declare them enemies of the state?
Or is that too 'right wing'?

[Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid has announced he’ll attach a DREAM Act amendment to the defense appropriations bill:This work period, the Senate will consider the Defense Authorization bill. Along with critical support for our national security forces around the world, this legislation will address two other important issues that are long overdue.
Passage of this bill would overturn the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ rule for our armed forces. We will finally send a loud and clear message that everyone who steps up to serve our country should and will be welcomed regardless of sexual orientation.
We are also offering an amendment to pass the DREAM Act. This amendment will ensure that millions of children who grow up as Americans will be able to get the education they need to contribute to our economy. Students who come to America before age 16 and who have been here for five years should be able get their green card...
What is "The DREAM Act"? You'll love this:
S. 2075, the DREAM Act of 2005: Need a reward for sneaking into the country and then evading the police for five years? Well, how does amnesty and in-state tuition sound?
If my kids sneak out of the country and then back in, can they get the in-state tuition deal?S. 2075 would grant in-state tuition and amnesty to illegal aliens under the age of 21 who had been physically present in the country for five years and are in 7th grade or above. Such a reward for illegal immigration serves as an incentive for more illegal immigration.
At what point can we stop questioning the Democrat leadership's patriotism and simply declare them enemies of the state?
Or is that too 'right wing'?
Could someone check the water inside the Beltway? Krauthammer and Rove teeter on the irrelevancy cliff as they brutalize Reagan's 11th Commandment
Charles Krauthammer and Karl Rove both have storied histories backing the conservative movement and, by extension, the Republican Party. But it would appear that they've become far too cloistered, or at least far too invested in the establishment, to truly understand the mood of the country.
Delaware voters turned out in record number to reject the ridiculous 'progressive Republican' Mike Castle in favor of a real conservative named Christine O'Donnell.
Nevada voters rejected two Republican candidates for a clear Constitutional conservative, Sharron Angle.
Rove and Krauthammer have now expressly attacked both. And for what? Because their predictions were wrong? Because they had a stake in the losing camps? I don't know and, frankly, I don't care.
It would seem that both analysts think the American people are too stupid to judge these things for themselves. I just hope they had a bad fish dinner a couple of nights ago and come to their senses shortly.
Gentlemen, there's a very simple playbook we're operating by. It's called the Constitution. Mike Castle and his ilk operate unmoored, picking and choosing policy positions like they're throwing darts.
We've had enough of that bulls***. The stakes are too high and the situation too dire to play that game.
Furthermore, as Jim Hoft reminds us, Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment was straightforward:
"Thou Shalt Not Speak Ill of Another Republican"
Dear Messrs. Rove and Krauthammer: learn it, love it, and live it.
Otherwise, prepare to be flushed down the irrelevancy hole. It's not a tough choice. James Madison or Karl Rove? Thomas Jefferson or Charles Krauthammer?
Gee, what a dilemma.
Update: Creepy Harry Reid hands O’Donnell her first general election ad on a silver platter

Sen. Jim DeMint obliterates Mike Castle: 'I was there when we had the numbers, but didn’t have the principles'
In an interview yesterday on The Mark Levin Show, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) vaporized the arguments made by Mike Castle's supporters with a single sentence:
"I was there when we had the numbers, but didn’t have the principles"
There should be no confusion about Constitutional conservatives' support of Castle's nemesis, Christine O'Donnell.
• Mike Castle is a staunch supporter of unions -- especially the SEIU -- and said support only began after copious amounts of union money began flowing into his campaign coffers.
• Mike Castle supported one of the most outrageous violations of the First Amendment -- the DISCLOSE Act -- ever seen in Washington. Its intent -- to baldly suppress conservative speech -- was so obvious that Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) stated that without the DISCLOSE Act, "we'll see more Republicans getting elected -- both local, state and federal [sic]."
• Mike Castle does not agree with the Second Amendment, having earned an 'F' from the NRA for his 'lifetime achievements'.
• Mike Castle doesn't believe in free enterprise, having earned a pathetic 43% from the Club for Growth.
• Just like Charlie Crist, Arlen Specter, and other unprincipled candidates, Castle won't rule out a third-party run if he loses the primary. And, like Crist, you can be certain he will shape-shift faster than a character from a Star Wars' cantina.
The times are too perilous to tolerate this kind of behavior when there are alternatives who will support that archaic document called "the Constitution". The squeamish Beltway Republicans may have heard of it.
BootMikeCastle.com's Frank puts a bow on the matter when he states, "Mike Castle is so far left, that if he were to win the GOP primary, his Democrat opponent in the general election would be able to run to the right of Mike Castle."
And that, my friends, is why we support the Constitutional alternative: Christine O'Donnell. And, yes. My prediction is that she can and will win the general election. And it won't be close.

10 Amazing Photographs From the Civil War
Dennis points us to a large collection of amazing photographs at Mike Lynaugh's site. He writes, "Most probably a million wet plate photos were made during the Civil War... These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 150 years ago."

What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Barack Obama To Send $60B in Advanced Weaponry to Saudi Arabia, the Largest Single Arms Deal in History
Well, this certainly seems like a foolproof plan.
It's fortunate that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is such a tolerant society; much more accepting of different religions and cultures than, say, those Militant Quakers.
I suppose, though, that after the Clintons equipped Red China with guided missile technology in exchange for a measly $50,000 or so in campaign donations, President Obama couldn't stand being one-upped again by Bubba. This deal makes the PRC's technology acquisitions look like child's play.
In the largest US arms deal ever, the administration of US President Barack Obama is ready to notify Congress of plans to offer advanced aircraft to Saudi Arabia worth up to 60 billion dollars...
...the administration was also in talks with the kingdom about potential naval and missile-defense upgrades that could be worth tens of billions of dollars more.
...The 60 billion dollars in fighter jets and helicopters is the top-line amount requested by the Saudis...
...the administration will authorize the Saudis to buy as many as 84 new F-15 fighters, upgrade 70 more, and purchase three types of helicopters -- 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and 36 Little Birds, The Journal noted, citing unnamed officials.
Earlier media reports said that to assuage Israel's concerns, the Obama administration has decided not to offer Saudi Arabia so-called standoff systems, which are advanced long-range weapons that can be attached to F-15s for use in offensive operations against land- and sea-based targets.

Helpful Progressive Pundits Nate Silver and HuffMo's Bill Scher Quite Concerned About 'Insurgents' Who Could Cost the GOP a Senate Majority
Gee, they've been right about so very much. They backed TARP. Barack Obama for President. The Stimulus Package (or, as I like to call it, "Lotto for Unions"). The Omnibus Spending Bill. Deficit spending from here to eternity. Oh, and lookie here: Gitmo's still open; troops are still in Iraq; and MINC actually approved a Bush-style surge in Afghanistan.Yes, these are real genius prognosticators at work.
2 Insurgents Could Hurt G.O.P. Chances for Senate Takeover
The first race in Delaware, where Christine O’Donnell, a political activist and commentator, is running against Michael N. Castle, who has held elected office in Delaware for 30 years as its governor, lieutenant governor and lone United States representative. The contest originally appeared to be a mismatch...
...Mr. Castle – a moderate who is unambiguously a member of the establishment – was next on their target list. And so Ms. O’Donnell, who already had the support of the Tea Party, last week received endorsements from Republican thought-leaders like Ms. Palin, the National Rifle Association and Senator James DeMint of South Carolina.
In contrast to Alaska, however, where Mr. Miller is the favorite to be elected unless Ms. Murkowski finds her way onto the ballot as a Libertarian or write-in candidate, Delaware is a blue state, and the electoral prospects of Mr. Castle and Ms. O’Donnell there are wildly divergent. Whereas Mr. Castle is nearly a 95 percent favorite against the Democratic nominee, Chris Coons, according to last week’s FiveThirtyEight forecasting model, Ms. O’Donnell would have just a 17 percent chance of winning a race against Mr. Coons.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If we have a GOP with more Mike Castles in it -- that can't agree on unimportant principles like the DISCLOSE Act (it's only the First Freaking Amendment) -- I'd just as soon have one less Senator.
But Silver and Scher are wrong about pretty much everything, so I strongly suspect that should Christine O'Donnell pull the upset, she'll have an excellent chance of edging her Democrat challenger.
By the way, Nate -- I'm still waiting for my apology from you and Keefus ("Sunday NFL Games Are Watchable Now") Olbermann over Dealergate. After all, Obama's "Car Czar" has admitted that politics played directly into decisions over which facilities were closed. But I understand your dilemma: you're wrong about so very much -- where would you begin your apology tour?

Weekly-Beltway-Cocktail-Circuit-Standard Publishes Al Qaqaa-style Hit-Piece on Christine O'Donnell That Alleges She... Once Sued Someone
The most incompetent state Republican apparatus in the nation is Delaware's GOP, which reportedly conspired with Democrat insiders to let Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Beau Biden, run unopposed for Attorney General.
Further, the Delaware GOP has gone so far as to partner with Mike Castle's campaign, filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) that alleges Tea Party conservatives illegally colluded with Christine O'Donnell in the Senate Primary.
Well, that should engender lots of grass-roots support.
Now Mike Castle's Beltway cocktail buddies at The Weekly Standard have pulled The New York Times' old Al-Qaqaa trick: publishing a lengthy, seemingly "scathing" assault on Christine O'Donnell that contains two allegations:
• O'Donnell once sued an ex-employer for gender discrimination.
• O'Donnell is said to have claimed she took classes at Princeton.
Shocking.
Now, I'll tell you what Christine O'Donnell didn't do:
• She didn't vote for the DISCLOSE Act, the goal of which is to suppress free speech by conservatives, while leaving unions and other Democrat support groups unscathed.
• She didn't vote with the most liberal Democrats over the issue of guns and earn an F from the NRA.
• She didn't vote with Barack Obama 60% of the time including for Cap-and-Trade.
No, Christine O'Donnell didn't do any of those things. Rep. Mike Castle (R-INO) -- who The Weekly Standard calls a "moderate" -- did.
If by "moderate", they mean that Castle doesn't believe in the Bill of Rights' First, Second or Tenth Amendments then, yes, Castle is a moderate.
The Weekly Standard really hurts its credibility and reputation with tripe like this. As Erick Erickson tweeted earlier, "Sorry folks, but if we need Mike Castle for a Senate majority, we do not need a Senate majority."
Update: Dan Riehl: "Why No Interest In Mike Castle's Corrupt Lobbyist Problems?"
Related: Mike Castle is a staunch supporter of 'the right to choose'; should help him cope with having his political career aborted by Christine O'Donnell.

The Dreams That Fly Away

All mankind will pass before You

like members of the flock.

Like a shepherd pasturing his flock,

making sheep pass under his staff,

so shall You cause to pass, count, calculate, and consider the soul of all the living;

and You shall apportion the fixed needs of all Your creatures

and inscribe their verdict.
For Your Name signifies Your praise:

hard to anger and easy to appease,

for You do not wish the death of one deserving death,

but that he repent from his way and live.

Until the day of his death You await him;

if he repents You will accept him immediately.

It is true that You are their Creator and

You know their inclination,

for they are flesh and blood.

Our origin is dust and our end is dust.

At the hazard of our life we earn our bread.

We are like a fragile vessel,

like the grass that withers

the flower that fades,

the shadow that passes,

the cloud that vanishes,

the wind that blows,

the dust that floats,

the dreams that fly away

Verily.

The dreams that fly away.

Your kingship is an eternal kingship.

Your dominion is for all generations.
