The Second Annual PUK Awards, First Installment

iOwnTheWorld has announced its second annual PUK awards, for which the first installment of my entries may be found below.

The devastating part of the contest -- at least for me -- is that the inscrutable and evil genius Dr. William Z. Jacobson is judging the contest. Ever since he launched that infamous denial-of-service (DoS) attack on this website in 1954, the two of us have waged a cold war of sorts.

So it's par for the course that those nimrods at iOTW would name him the judge. Of course we're not going to win. Jacobson hates my guts, especially since I briefly hacked his website. It was back in 1963. I renamed it to Beatle Resurrection and made the whole site a fictional story about how the popular, groovy Beatles rock band had perished in an untimely mining incident... but then they'd come back to life in an elegantly staged hoax to make them more popular than, well, you know. But I digress...

Secret U.S. Space Plane Glides Back to Earth--And, Thankfully, Even the WikiLeaks Crackpots Don't Know What It Was Doing

The mysterious, 220-day mission of the unmanned X-37B space plane came to a quiet end on Friday.

The U.S. Air Force developed this secretive mission with the Orbital Test Vehicle 1 (OTV-1), better known as the X-37B space plane...

It is a robotic winged craft, with no humans onboard, that looks somewhat similar to the more familiar space shuttles Atlantis, Endeavour, and Discovery.

The X-37B space plane is about nine meters (29 feet) in length, has a wingspan of about four meters (14 feet), and has a height of approximately three meters (9.5 feet)... [and weighs] about 11,000 pounds...

It landed on a runway at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, at approximately 1:16 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST), after its first trip into space...

Its mission is Top Secret, but speculation is rife about its true operational characteristics. Among the use-cases:

• Launch anti-satellite explosives
• MAHEM - send a stream of super-heated molten metal into other space vehicles
• Direct tactical lasers and microwaves
• Launch microsatellite or nanosatellites that attach themselves to enemy satellites to disable or coopt them
• Launch and detonate e-bombs (small, directed EMP explosions) to kill enemy electronics
• Drop tungsten rods on Earth-borne targets from space ("Rods from God")

In the latter case, try imagining a telephone pole hitting Osama Bin Laden at 7,000 MPH.

Faster, please.

California's delightful double standard: no ID required for voting--but those who buy a box of ammo will get fingerprinted

California officials have resisted common sense voter ID rules for years, most recently hampering the introduction of a ballot initiative last month.

But starting on 1 Feb. 2011, Californians wishing to buy ammo will be treated like common criminals. Fingerprinting and record-keeping of the purchase will be required -- to buy a box of ammo!

...the double standard is glaringly obvious. When we ask that voters produce identification as they cast a ballot — which would be a reasonable and necessary precaution against the very real and serious crime of election fraud — they tell us no, that’s un-American and racist. But it’s okay to pointlessly harass gun owners who are exercising a legal and Constitutionally-protected activity...

Here’s what will happen as the law kicks in. Gun owners will be hurrying to buy ammunition prior to the deadline. In order to get exactly what they want, in the quantities they want, in the time allowed, they will order from out of state. (That’s what I’ve done.) So we’ll see a short-term spike in purchasing…but much of the sales volume will slip away from in-state vendors. Then, after the deadline passes, California retailers will see sales drop precipitously...

...gun owners will find a way to make a large out-of-state purchase once a year or so... One way or another, a large number of us will obtain ammo while evading the state-mandated persecution. Gun owners are the sort of people that don’t take this sort of abuse sitting down.

When the numbers come in, and it becomes clear that Sacramento has done nothing more than drive its own vendors out of business during a time of extreme hardship when they needed help rather than mistreatment, some of the saner lawmakers will suggest that this idiotic and counterproductive legislation be reversed. It’s possible the bill will be repealed, although I wouldn’t count on it. More likely, the kooks in power will tell us it’s good that ammunition retailers are going broke, because now they’ll stop selling that nasty stuff that nice people shouldn’t buy, and instead open new businesses in green industries, and then they’ll hire lots of workers for good-paying green jobs...

California should change its slogan to "Where law-abiding citizens are treated like illegal immigrants -- and vice versa"!

Howard Dean Admits the Truth About Progressives: Overthrow of the U.S. Government Is Our Aim

It doesn't get any more plain than this interview with Howard Dean, former presidential candidate and chairman of the Democrat National Committee.

We almost came back in New Hampshire, Karen Hicks, who ran Hillary’s campaign, she’s a disciple of Marshall Ganz who’s a disciple of Saul Alinksy, Marshall Ganz is probably the best theoretical organizer today, he influenced Obama’s campaign very heavily...

Whether you know who Saul Alinsky is -- and what he stands for -- or not, Andrew McCarthy's description of his movement and its impact upon Obama bears repeating.

...the president is an Alinskyite, so steeped in the ideology of the seminal community organizer that he became a top instructor in Alinskyite tactics for other up-and-coming radicals...

...Alinksyites are fifth-column radicals. They have, in substance, the same goals as open revolutionaries: overthrowing the existing free-market republic and replacing it with a radical’s utopia. That’s why Obama could befriend such unrepentant former terrorists as Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, and take inspiration from Jeremiah Wright, a black-liberation theologist...

...But Alinskyites are more sophisticated, patient, and practical. They bore in, hollowing out the system from within, appropriating the appearance and argot of mainstream society. Their single, animating ambition is to overthrow the capitalist social order, which they claim to see as racist, corrupt, exploitative, imperialist, etc...

...Apart from that goal, everything else — from the public option to Afghanistan — is negotiable: They reserve the right to take any position on any matter, to say anything at any time, based on the ebb and flow of popular opinion. That keeps them politically viable while they radically transform society. Transform it into what, they haven’t worked out in great detail — except that it will be perfect, communal, equal, and just.

Alinsky proposed a variety of methods that radicals could use to tear American society apart. Violence was part of his equation.

Society has good reason to fear the Radical. Every shaking advance of mankind toward equality and justice has come from the Radical. He hits, he hurts, he is dangerous. Conservative interests know that while Liberals are most adept at breaking their own necks with their tongues, Radicals are most adept at breaking the necks of Conservatives...

...Radicals precipitate the social crisis by action - by using power... The Radical recognizes that constant dissension and conflict is and has been the fire under the boiler of democracy. He firmly believes in that brave saying of a brave people, "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!" ...

The Radical may resort to the sword but when he does he is not filled with hatred against those individuals whom he attacks. He hates these individuals not as persons but as symbols representing ideas or interests which he believes to be inimical to the welfare of the people... That is the reason why Radicals, although frequently embarking upon revolutions, have rarely resorted to personal terrorism"...

In short, Alinsky supported violence and terror to achieve the overthrow of American society.

And any person who runs under the banner of Alinsky should be disqualified from holding public office. They should be called precisely what they are: Communists.

There is no possible way that an adherent of Alinsky can sincerely take a pledge to uphold the Constitution.

Let me say that again, slowly, for the liberals: there is no valid method -- none whatsoever! -- for an Alinskyite to take a solemn oath to uphold the nation's highest law.

The Constitution is not a suicide pact. Allowing Alinskyites into positions of power is akin to permitting Nikita Khrushchev to name members of the cabinet during the height of the Cold War.

We need to call them what they are: Reds.

Great News, Chicagoans: Your Democrat Leaders Just Voted to Raise Property Taxes 100%!

I love the smell of blue-on-blue civil warfare in the morning.

The Illinois Senate on Thursday approved police and firefighter pension legislation that Mayor Daley warned would blow a $550 million hole in the city budget, but the top Senate Democrat pledged to try softening that financial hit next month.

...the legislation requires a steep ramp-up in contributions to the funds starting in 2015 -- and it mandates those contributions be paid for by property taxes. Daley estimates that would require a $550 million property tax increase.

Minutes before the Senate's vote, Daley -- for the third straight day -- spoke out against the bill... To place the entire burden on Chicago property owners -- and mandate the largest property tax increase in the city's history -- would paralyze home sales, the mayor said.

"From today on, you won't be able to sell your house. . . . These taxes are gonna go up by 100 percent or more,' " Daley said.

The lame-duck mayor noted that pension fund contributions by city employees have been frozen for 34 years and that an increase in employee contributions is inevitable, no matter how hard union leaders try to stop it...

Aren't the public sector unions -- which completely control the modern Democrat Party -- fun?

Delightful: White House Seeks to Shred More of the Constitution by Eradicating House of Representatives' Power of the Purse

Ed Morrissey finds the buried gem inside a staid Politico report on the U.S. budget.

The action came as the administration sent to the Capitol more than 50 funding adjustments it wants considered as part of what would be a stripped-down appropriations package for the remainder of the 2011 fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

Many agencies would be left frozen at their current spending levels, but the documents indicate the White House is seeking more than $11.4 billion in new spending above 2010, chiefly for foreign aid and defense accounts as well as education initiatives and housing assistance for low-income tenants. The administration also wants to a remarkably open-ended authority to transfer funds between accounts — a power that is sure to be resisted by the Appropriations Committee leadership.

This is what’s known as “burying the lead” in journalism. A Republican House will have the “power of the purse” to put an end to executive branch overreach — for instance, the efforts at the EPA to create carbon caps outside of Congressional authorization, the FCC’s attempts to regulate the Internet, and so on. That power is a key part of the checks and balances in federal government...

...[Obama knows] that Republicans plan on using the power of the purse to keep the Obama administration from abusing its power and making end-runs around the legislature. It all but demands a blank check from Congress as a budget plan and ends their ability to direct funding as it sees fit. It’s a carte blanche for runaway executive power.

Senate Republicans must pledge to filibuster any budget with that kind of authority built into it.

Can you imagine the reaction of the media and the Left (but I repeat myself) if George W. Bush had attempted such an extra-Constitutional maneuver?

Morrissey is absolutely right to state that "every member of Congress should protest this demand to surrender the Constitutional prerogative of budgeting and the check on power it represents. Otherwise, they will consign the people’s branch to a mere rubber stamp for executive whims."

The nation's highest law -- the Constitution -- is a mere inconvenience for the great Barack Obama and the the most radical Congress in American history.

Constitutional attorney Mark Levin once called the Obama White House "as close to a dictatorship as this country has ever seen". Every day and in every way, Alinsky's most celebrated acolyte seems determined to prove his detractors right.

Curiously juxtaposed headlines o' the day

Both of these headlines appeared on the same page of USA Today (hard copy edition):

Deficit commission calls for big spending cuts

and:

$4.5B Nutrition bill would limit bake sales

Genius: the biggest spending administration in world history -- $1 trillion in "stimulus"; $500 billion in Omnibus spending; cash-for-clunkers, HAMP, Obamacare, regulating bake sales, doubling the size of the EPA so it can lock up our energy resources tighter and tighter -- needs to cut spending?

Gee, what gave it away?

And try as I might, whenever I contemplate the bumbling authoritarians running the modern Democrat Party, I keep picturing Hogan's Heroes. With Barney Frank as Sergeant Schultz. And Harry Reid as Colonel Klink.

QOTD: "It is a year since the so-called Climategate e-mails were leaked. Since then, we have had freezing winters in Europe and the US, and revelations of gross misrepresentations from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The lasting impression is of massive corruption of science... Leaked from the Climate Research Unit in England, the e-mails showed the scientists behind the climate scare plotting to: hide, delete and manipulate data; to denigrate scientists presenting different views; to force journals to publish only papers promoting climate alarm; to subvert "peer review" into "pal review"; and make the reports of the IPCC nothing but alarmist propaganda. The corruption spread through governments, universities, scientific societies and journals

The worst nonsense after the scandal was this: "Well, some climate scientists committed a few minor transgressions but the basic science is sound." In fact, the basic science is nonexistent." -- Andrew Kenny, A Year After Climategate, The Corruption Of Science Persists

"Hey kid, you got a license to run dis bake sale?"

The bankrupt federal government has decided to spend $4.5 billion regulating bake sales and high school football concession stands. Because, it would appear, there's nothing more urgent than issuing licenses to sell chocolate chip cookies.

[The bill] adds another 115,000 children to subsidized school food programs, and adds a whole new class of entitled student, the school “dinner” student. This means the government in some schools will be serving low-income kids breakfast, lunch and dinner (take this a few years down the road and who needs parents? Just leave your kids at the warehouse.)

--“the legislation would apply to all foods sold in schools during regular class hours, including in the cafeteria line, vending machines and at fundraisers. It wouldn't apply to after-hours events or concession stands at sports events. Public health groups pushed for the language on fundraisers, which encourages the secretary of Agriculture to allow them only if they are infrequent.”

To be a member of the modern Democrat Party, you have to be exceedingly stupid. The voters just kicked the crap out of Democrats at every level of government for precisely this unconstitutional insanity.

And while they're regulating bake sales, the economy is trembling as taxes on every American are poised to increase. But the lame duck Democrats can't trifle with those minor concerns: vending machines are killing kids. Killing kids, I say!

The Five Graphs of Doom

Runner-up Headline: The Genius of Obamanomics: If You Incent People to Stay Unemployed, They Stay Unemployed

Gee, these are such stellar results, how about we extend unemployment benefits to, say, 200 weeks? Or maybe... 20 years to life?

Unemployment Rises to 9.8%

"Private payrolls +50K on expectations of +160K! Retail Manufacturing payrolls plunge 13K on expectations of +5K. Previous revised down to -7K. As Zero Hedge expected the ADP was totally and completely off. And so the myth of the recovery can suck it"

Record Foodstamp Usage

"For those seeking a perfect explanation of what is happening in United Banana States of America right now, then look no further: the just released September Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program data is out and we are happy to report that the number of poor Americans has never been higher - SNAP recipients just hit a fresh all time high of 42.9 million. Naturally, the market celebrates the record number of poor Americans by closing at 2010 highs."

Biggest Non-Farm Payroll Miss In Over Two Years

"Today's actual [Non-Farm Payroll] NFP result, which was at 111,000 jobs below the economist estimate of 150,000, was the worst miss in over two and a half years."

Money-Printing 101, 202, and 303

"So now that two years of QE (in their 1, Lite and 2 iterations) are in the history [books], we finally can run some correlation analyses to see just what asset class the Fed had been targeting all along. The attached chart presents the very simple result... The [accompanying] chart ... shows total Fed holdings of USTs and of the [S&P 500]... Now here's a thought: the Fed has another $800 billion in UST purchasing dry powder left under QE2 alone... ...Of course the chart above excludes the price of gold in US currency, which confirms that on a real basis, the value of the black line has declined over the same period as it has gotten progressively more diluted with pieces of linen courtesy of the red line."

And the Winner Is... Gold

As Ben Bernanke's magic printing press continues to churn out paper buckos backed by nothing less than the full faith and credit of hope'n'change, gold (and silver, for that matter) continues to ratchet ever higher.

Update: "We've never had a longer stretch of 9%-plus unemployment since... World... War... II." -- Gerri Willis, describing 19 straight months of devastating unemployment thanks to Obamanomics.

Officer - is there some sort of a problem?

Yeah? So what? Did I do something wrong?

No, sir. But could you look in your rear-view mirror once more?

What the hell? What are those two eyeballs doing on your armored car?

Those, sir? That's the $480,000 your family could have saved by voting Republican over the last eighty years.
