The progressive left and its ilk -- like the man with the golden strap-on -- have a lot of descriptions for the country's dominant cable news channel. They claim that Fox fabricates news stories.I want them to prove it. And I've got a 1-ounce Krugerrand from my Y2K bunker* (today's spot price: $1,400) waiting for Keith Olbermann or any 'progressive' who can provide me with a documented lie repeated by Fox News reporters.
There are just four simple rules:
• Typos don't qualify ("ooh, the news ticker used a 'D' after his name, not an 'R'!").
• The lie must have been reported by at least two Fox News reporters (not analysts, reporters).
• The transcripts and/or video clips must be available on a suitably trustworthy site for verification.
• The real news story, refuting the Fox News lie, must have been correctly reported at around the same time by at least one news reporter from CNN or MSNBC (with similar links and/or transcripts from their sites).
Just one lie! That's all I'm asking for. This should be the easiest $1,400 you've ever made, Keith. You've got to have a whole database of Fox lies, right? Just post your correctly documented answer in the comments section before January 15, 2011. That's two freaking weeks!
And given the devaluation of our currency by President Training Wheels, the Krugerrand could easily be worth $1,500 by then.

Regardless, the lies aren't reporters saying "Look out! The sky is green!" Betsy McCaughey, a columnist for the Wall Street Journal, distorted the facts and wrote about them in the piece, "Ruin Your Health with the Obama Stimulus Plan". Her claims were thouroghly debunked by several sources. But the damage was already done. People believed the article. Then in steps Sarah Palin and the American public was in uproar over 'death panels'.

FOX is more guilty of speculating and overt implications than straight lying, which they do also. They are also guilty of huge lies by ommission. You don't think it's odd that the week before the Iraq invasion, that 76% off FOX viewers believed that Iraq was responsible for the attacks on 9/11, had WMDs, and was a direct threat to America? Being so misinformed doesn't "just happen". It's very intentional and masterfully done.

Can you clarify who qualifies as a Fox News Reporter?
ReplyDeleteIn the past there has been some confusion about who exactly is a reporter vs who is a "analyst", or a "host" on Fox News.
For example is Sean Hannity, or Glen Beck considered a Fox News reporter, anchor or host?
Your rules are completely arbitrary. Most of the people who appear on Fox News are either "analysts" or the hosts themselves. If Fox News provides a platform for people to regularly spout inaccurate statements without being challenging them then it's effectively a gateway for those inaccurate statements, whether or not they're being spouted by a reporter, an analyst, or Glenn Beck. Also, what are the chances that someone is going to spot a Fox News lie from three years ago and then comb through the transcripts of 3-year-old MSNBC and CNN shows to find the one report that refutes it?

ReplyDeleteThe problem with Fox News and indeed with all of the 24hr news networks is not that they lie, but instead they display people giving opinions in a setting where the audience expects to hear NEWS. They are replacing information and facts with analysis and argument, which is detrimental to all parties involved since it allows certain logical fallacies to take hold in the national debate on important issues. Fox News is just as biased towards the GOP as the MSNBC is towards the liberal Dems. Both parties are also victims of their own hypocrisies. The author even asserts that the only people who should be "trusted" to give unaltered facts are the reporters as opposed to the analysts. Yet analysts make up the majority of programming on these networks, so which group is the audience more likely to see: the unbiased reporters simply informing the public or the analysts who are very biased and who's opinions are very skewed toward their beliefs (liberal or conservative) and usually must be in line with that network's overall narrative?
Just who the heck is a journalist at Fox News? The line between journalist and analyst is blurred so you never know who is what on that network. It's all opinion wrapped up pseudo-facts wrapped up in a "some people say" game of telephone.

Actually Fox fought and won in court the right to lie in the news. It was a case involving Monsanto. A reporter was fired because he wouldn't report what he knew was a lie and the court ruled in Fox's favor when he sued. There is no legal requirement that the news be an accurate reflection of the truth.

The point isn't that Fox News reporters regularly lie, it's that the whole channel operates with a narrative in mind. MSNBC and CNN do this too, but to a lesser extent. Fox selectively presents information in such a way that it supports this narrative. They often use phrases like "some are saying," etc.

On February 14, a Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization. The court reversed the $425,000 jury verdict in favor of journalist Jane Akre who charged she was pressured by Fox Television management and lawyers to air what she knew and documented to be false information. The ruling basically declares it is technically not against any law, rule, or regulation to deliberately lie or distort the news on a television broadcast.

If Fox wants to perpetuate an untruth it gets a commentator to do it, see Glen Beck. Have you ever heard the term plausible deniability well Fox is pretty well versed in it. Pawning lies off on commentators may not be lying but it is unethical, there are numerous studies which show that people disconnect messages they hear from their source, so while they may hear a lie from a commentator they recall it in their mind as being from a more credible source, why do you think so many people think Obama is a muslim. So while your challenge is a very clever one, it does little to disprove that Fox perpetuates untruths in the publics general understanding of politics.

In an April 2009, the Fox News show America's Newsroom made the claim that Obama's $3.6 trillion budget is 4x bigger than Bush's costliest plan. This isn't true at all. Bush's budgets for 2009 and 2008 were $3.1 and $2.9 trillion respectively. Keep in mind, Fox News lives in an age where even a second grader could access this information in about 20 seconds.

ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever watched Fox News, Bill O'Riley's show was on. It was a show from June 1, 2005 I believe. The topic of the show was gay marriage. I distinctly remember Bill saying that since the legalisation of gay marriage in Sweden, the the institution of marriage had "collapsed".
First, gay marriage was not legal in Sweden at the time (instead, gay people could enter into "partnerships", which gave them the same rights as married couples).
Second, at that time, there had been no decline in the marriage/divorce rates in Sweden which could be linked to gays being allowed to enter into partnerships.
What Bill O'Riley said was completely made up, with no factual basis whatsoever.

The ground rules are simple. I provided an example of how to submit a winning entry (and a detailed description on the article itself). It's really not that hard. Do a "find" in your browser on the word "example" and you can see how to post a legitimate example of a Fox News lie.
To give you some real examples of lies: in 2004, the New York Times published a whole series of bogus stores about Al Qaqaa right before the election. They were published, it would appear, to damage Bush's reelection campaign. Mysteriously, all mention of Al Qaqaa ceased once Bush won the election.
Similar story with the John McCain lobbyist affair in 2008, which was (it would appear) a flat-out fabrication.
So far, the "big winners" we have are:
1. The wrong stock footage of a health care protest was used by Fox (perhaps to mislead about the size of the crowd, but perhaps it was an intern's mistake). Certainly not a lie, which must be a statement of fact. And certainly not a "lie" like the New York Times' Al Qaqaa or a John McCain lobbyist affair.
2. A local Fox broadcaster somewhere had an appeals case heard and adjudicated about something... But local Fox affiliate != Fox News Channel. FNC doesn't control every local broadcaster's reporting -- same it true of CBS, ABC, and NBC.
3. Someone's notes (Cameron?) were inadvertently included on the FNC website and then corrected. That's happened on CNN (when a reporter voiced over fake stories), but that was a stupid attempt at a joke. Not a disinformation campaign.
Where is a REAL LIE by FNC... a real disinformation campaign... like the New York Times' Al Qaqaa fabrication?
Just one lie. In the correct format.

ReplyDeleteGregory, the only problem with your assertion is that The Atlantic reports that Fox News simply relayed what Jennings himself stated during a speech. Jenning stated during his speech that the boy was 15, which was under the age of consent.
I find MediaMatters does this a great deal -- position FNC as having lied when, in fact, their reporters are simply relaying a known statement or fact (e.g., Shirley Sherrod was not reported by Fox until after the White House had commented).

Doug, you might think that editing in footage from the wrong Tea Party rally was an "interns mistake." Let me assure you as someone that works in the news business (and that is all it fucking is... a business), that things like this don't just happen. For an intern to make this mistake he or she would have had to go back, locate the footage in the archives and then edit it in. Also, interns don't edit packages that go on air at places as big as Fox News. When packages are being edited, the footage comes from a tape used specifically to film that event. Maybe editors were handed the wrong tape? No. That tape would have been buried amongst other tapes from months before, not just ACCIDENTALLY handed to the editors. Maybe purposely, but not accidentally. Get a damn clue.

So exactly where is the lie in all of those shifting positions?
Here's the problem with this kind of challenge. FOX is an organization. Organizations are not people.
ReplyDeleteFor something to be a lie, it must be both factually untrue, and something the speaker knew to be untrue. But as soon as examples are given, then there is an immediate counter-assertion that the person who lied is not the organization, or they made an innocent mistake, etc.
Further, of course, who is the judge of such an assertion? If it is the person who made the challenge, this is all just meaningless absurdity. Getting someone so invested in their own worldview that they would pretend to risk anything of value to validate it, means that they will certainly never actually admit they are wrong. They'll just continue to use sophistry to pretend as if some new arbitrary threshold was not reached.
This rather famously was done by T. Boone Pickens, who put out a supposed $1 million reward if what the Swift Boat veterans against John Kerry could have been proven to have lied. After a group of different veterans sent him a registered letter, documenting 10 such misstatements that any reasonable person would have known was untrue, he reneged on his offer, pretending that it only covered opinion ads the SBV ran. This, of course, was a second lie, which could have been the basis of an unprofitable lawsuit, but it wasn't.
Opinion is not a "lie". It is opinion. An assertion like "Sarah Palin has more intelligence in her little pinky than the entire global community of climatologists" may be devoutly believed by some, but impossible to "disprove" without some mutually agreed upon measure. And when there is no measure, or neutral third party to apply it, then the challenge is meaningless.
In other words, the only person who is actually lying in these exercises is the person who makes the original statement. "Doug" has absolutely no intention of giving up his gold coin, ever. The fact that he is engaging in a swift moving of the goalposts shows that.
I'm not going to attack him as a "liar" as a general term, simply because everyone lies sometime during their lifetime. However it is clear that in this context, Doug has lied. And in this thread he shows a clear record of dishonesty, which is unfortunately typical behavior for emotional reasoners.
Of course he won't admit it, but that's also par for the course. Reward or not, it's clear that he will never admit that he was proven wrong by people he disagrees with politically.
Guys, all I am looking for is a serious LIE by Fox News Channel.

ReplyDeleteI tried to pick a super easy one, since the complex ones often inject opinion and the biggest Fox liars are those non-news opinion shows, like Beck and O'Reilly. Guess I missed the target.
First, though irrelevant, the "nuanced stance". Obama opposes gay marriage, but also believes it's a state issue and said so. He has not changed his stance, which isn't all that nuanced.
The lie is not Obama's stance. It is what Fox did with the quotes from the interview that was a lie.
- Obama said he didn't mind California allowing same-sex marriage. He did not mind the BAN of Prop 8.
- Fox News said that Obama said he didn't mind Prop 8.
A simple, intentional, edit and they made him appear to say the exact opposite of what he said. And I'd say "oops, bad edit!" except James Rosen clearly SPEAKS the Fox News lie, as does Kimberly Schwandt, in print: "The White House Thursday applauded the overturning of Prop 8, but as a candidate, Obama said he didn't have a problem with it." No, Kimmy, he did not say that.
MSNBC leans, but Fox outright lies. The hardest part about proving the Fox News lies is just the amount of time it takes to look into all of them. Someday, I'm going to dismantle a solid Fox News hour. I'll probably end up with six minutes of truth. If I include commercials. Less if I pick an hour of Beck.
On a serious note, if you ever decide that someone's proved that Fox News lied, ever, about anything, but can't decide who to give it to and still want to make good - why don't you donate that money to the National Association of Free Clinics (freeclinics.us), a group that Olbermann supports, his viewers have given a lot to and certainly a cause that can't be found objectionable by anyone sane.
