In early April 1862, a Union army under Ulysses S. Grant camped along the Tennessee River at Pittsburg Landing, waiting for reinforcements before pushing south into Mississippi. Shiloh was the battle that showed just how bad this war was going to be. it even rattled Sherman of all people. And it got worse from there.
