The Interstate 35 Mississippi River bridge collapsed this evening at approximately 6:05pm local time. The initial eye-witness accounts mentioned that construction on the bridge had traffic in one direction down to a single lane. The following pictures of the I-35 bridge provide some perspective.
The upper right third of this photo depicts the I-35 bridge. The 10th Avenue bridge, the narrower of the two structures to the immediate right of I-35, did not appear to be damaged.
Looking south over the river, the scale of the span is apparent.
Another perspective: looking west along the river.
The height of the bridge is approximately 63 feet at its highest point, according to Fox News.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this catastrophe.
Update: Mark LaCroix posted a series of photos taken from the ground.
