Goldstone apologizing is like a Homicide bomber saying "excuse me I didn't know I would make such a mess"
Actually, it's more like a the parable of the Rabbi who was ostracized by his congregation, due to false allegations by a member.
When the member went to the Rabbi to apologize and ask what he could do to make amends, the Rabbi took out a feather pillow, cut a hole in it, and let the wind take all the feathers into the wind.
He then instructed the man to go collect all the feathers. When the man said that was impossible, the rabbi proved his point. Once the false allegations became part of people's beliefs, it is too late.
