QOTD: "Obama appears not to understand that ideology is alive and well and shapes life in profound ways. Societies are based on core ideological principles that cannot be randomly combined according to “what works.”

Economic, political, and social systems are like three-legged stools. The three legs of the capitalist or free enterprise stool are democratic/pluralistic public choice, a non-interventionist state, and a rule of law that protects personal and economic liberty. The three legs of the socialist stool are a one-party state, pervasive intervention in economic affairs, and a lack of a rule of law to guard personal and economic freedom.

The capitalist stool stands higher and is more stable than its socialist counterpart. Centuries of history show that capitalist, free enterprise economies have been able to grow, provide rising living standards, and innovate new technologies, contrary to Karl Marx’s belief they would inevitably collapse. Consider Germany and Korea: At the time of separation, North and South Korea had the same per capita income. Today, the Communist North has the same subsistence income as 65 years earlier, while the capitalist South’s has increased ten-fold with a thriving middle class. When the Berlin wall fell in 1989, curious West German visitors to the elite Wandlitz housing compound were surprised that East Germany’s top leaders did not live much better than they. In fact, their greatest privilege was a store stocked with West German goods within the compound grounds. Even the countries cited by the Left as positive examples of “democratic socialism”—Sweden and Denmark—gained their affluence through a century of free-enterprise growth, and they revert back to first principles when they stray too far from the model..." --Paul R. Gregory

"Without calculation, economic activity is impossible. Since under Socialism economic calculation is impossible, under Socialism there can be no economic activity in our sense of the word ... All economic change, therefore, would involve operations the value of which could neither be predicted beforehand nor ascertained after they had taken place. Everything would be a leap in the dark. Socialism is the renunciation of rational economy." -- Ludwig von Mises, Socialism, 1981, pp. 103-105.

Why Socialism Must Always Fail: Ludwig Von Mises on Economic Calculation under Socialism
by Emmanuel Forgolou (June 25, 2000)

Article address:

In "Economic Calculation in a Socialist Commonwealth," Ludwig von Mises demonstrates, once and forever, that, under socialist central planning, there are no means of economic calculation and that, therefore, socialist economy itself is "impossible"--not just inefficient or less innovative or conducted without benefit of decentralized knowledge, but really and truly and literally impossible.

On the service Socialism is just a different economic system, on built on the specious idea that society would be better on balance when everyone is forced by the government to live at the expense of everyone else. But this is only where socialism starts. The economic aspects of socialism are a means to a social and indeed almost spiritual end: to improve human nature itself. This is how we go from "to each according to his need, from each according to his ability," to "the Perfect Soviet Man". It is an attempt to make humans that are spiritually perfect, at least as socialists would define them.

But this cannot be. It is impossible. God tells us plainly in Scripture that apart from God, humanity can never transcend its inherent nature and its basic mortality. Socialism is an attempt to do both. Otherwise, socialists would not be so fierce and frantic in their efforts and demands to replace liberty and the free market with socialism and the socialist society. A society built around socialism, then is a society that is attempting to function based on lies, starting with economic lies, but moving to lies about government and society itself. That is why a free market does not need secret police and slave labor camps but a socialist society always eventually has them. That is why socialists must lie:

"The permanent lie becomes the only safe form of existence, in the same way as betrayal. Every wag of the tongue can be overheard by someone, every facial expression observed by someone. Therefore every word, if it does not have to be a direct lie, is nonetheless obliged not to contradict the general, common lie. There exists a collection of ready-made phrases, of labels, a selection of ready-made lies.”

– Alexander Solzhenitsyn on the pervasiveness of lies in the socialist society
