The Gold Bullion Challenge to @KeithOlbermann -- Document a Single @FoxNews Lie and Win a $1,400 Krugerrand

Update 1/8/11 8:31AM PST: All Four Media Matters Attempts Completely Blown Apart.

The self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media" -- Perez Hilton -- points us to a blistering attack on Fox News by media superstar Keith Olbermann™.

Keith Olbermann has once again taken on Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly, after Twitter users lashed out at him for supporting a liberal-slanted website... He responded by writing:

FYI: in reply to "highly ironic that you support Daily Kos yet think Fox News is slanted" I said: Fox News is 100% bulls**t. And it is.

@mtovet you're right: I don't have as much hate or as many lies in me as O'Reilly

@tonyperry1 I did it because his network is full of bulls**t & O'Reilly is full of bulls**t. & if you believe them you're full of bulls**t.

@DailyRushbo let's clarify this. Fox News is 100% Bulls**t. Rush Limbaugh is 100% Pigeons**t.

Wow! He is certainly not holding back, is he?!

Isn't Perez' use of punctuation intoxicating? But I digress.

"Faux News." "Liars." "Not really a news organization." "A right-wing propaganda machine."

The progressive left and its ilk -- like the man with the golden strap-on -- have a lot of descriptions for the country's dominant cable news channel. They claim that Fox fabricates news stories.

I want them to prove it. And I've got a 1-ounce Krugerrand from my Y2K bunker* (today's spot price: $1,400) waiting for Keith Olbermann or any 'progressive' who can provide me with a documented lie repeated by Fox News reporters.

There are just four simple rules:

• Typos don't qualify ("ooh, the news ticker used a 'D' after his name, not an 'R'!").

• The lie must have been reported by at least two Fox News reporters (not analysts, reporters).

• The transcripts and/or video clips must be available on a suitably trustworthy site for verification.

• The real news story, refuting the Fox News lie, must have been correctly reported at around the same time by at least one news reporter from CNN or MSNBC (with similar links and/or transcripts from their sites).

Just one lie! That's all I'm asking for. This should be the easiest $1,400 you've ever made, Keith. You've got to have a whole database of Fox lies, right? Just post your correctly documented answer in the comments section before January 15, 2011. That's two freaking weeks!

And given the devaluation of our currency by President Training Wheels, the Krugerrand could easily be worth $1,500 by then.

Ready? Get set... go!

* Since converted to a super-secret 2038 Bunker.

Update: Media Matters submits its response. This ought to be good.

Hat tip: Ame.

Anyone notice how this guy is pointing out lies that Obama supposedly said but not a news organization? Should we point out all the Palin, Bush, Cheney, etc... lies?

Dude cannot even get his own stuff straight, how do you expect him to get his "contest" straight?

Pay up you fucking pussy.

Matt Gertz has documented Fox News' reporters lie about Elena Kagan banning military recruiters from Harvard, when in fact she only kept them from using the Office of Career Services. Military recruiters were, in fact, welcome at the rest of Harvard's campus.

Pay up, you wingnut cheapskate

Anonymous said...

The story behind why the dean let the recruiters resume association with the office of career services doesn't seem too legitimate, What kind of federal funding can they pull from a private university? Stafford Loans? Can they even do that?!

DrThunder said...

Can you please give some input on these two quotes?

I want them to prove it. And I've got a 1-ounce Krugerrand from my Y2K bunker* (today's spot price: $1,400) waiting for Keith Olbermann or any 'progressive' who can provide me with a documented lie repeated by Fox News reporters.

Gregory, the only problem with your assertion is that The Atlantic reports that Fox News simply relayed what Jennings himself stated during a speech. Jenning stated during his speech that the boy was 15, which was under the age of consent.

I assume you will say the discrepancy is in the use of the word 'repeated' vs. 'relayed', but my point is you said that Fox News had to repeat a lie, not actually lie themselves. This would basically include any accidental lie due to ignorance (i.e. They didn't know they were lying at the time). Accidentally repeating a lie is still a lie.

Anonymous said...

Also, Fuck you Doug.

Anonymous said...

Doug Ross, you are the lier here. Either that or what are you? Nobody ever suggested that Fox news tells the truth. Many tv networks have made false statements. They were wrong. Often times they even repeated the "wrong facts". A lie would be if they knew it was wrong. Try and prove that.

Since Fox News has been wrong so often (remember that hilarious picture of the Beck's ralley they used a couple times? wasn't the right picture? dear me!), and that it was almost always in line with their campaign against an imaginary foe (liberals) I suppose they often times do know better. As such, I deduct they do lie pretty often.

You will never pay up. You could have just as easily put that up for anyone to prove that the earth is not flat, but round. You wouldn't pay up either. I have a pretty good lie, that has been proven to be a deliberate lie:

Fox News: "Fair and Balanced". Fox News was never intended to be fair or balanced.

Man, even if Fox News wouldn't try to manipulate the stupid - it is so pathetic, simplistic and pathetic that everybody who watches it has to be pitied. It is really, really sad. I feel for you my Americans. Really, must be terribly hard to live in your country right now.

As an wholly uninterested party in US politics, being a UK citizen, am I still eligible for the prize should I find documented evidence of a Fox News lie?

I'd not say no to $1,400 :)

Matt Gertz called you on it. When is he going to get his gold? Or will you spin this truth as well?

So..... when are you going to send Media Matters the gold? I'm guessing never since you are full of it. No worries though. Seeing you proved wrong is worth way more then $1400 worth of gold.

Pay up fool.

You cant send out a challenge to the world and then not pay up when someone wins. Pay Matt Gertz the $1,400 he is entitled to.

Martin said...

Would it be so bad for you to once in your life do the honest thing and pay Matt Gertz (or one of the other people who met the conditions of your challenge) the money you promised? Would it hurt you so much to show integrity, even once?

Anonymous said...

So, dude, when are you going to man up and deliver on your promises?

Be honest, admit to your mistakes, and pay Matt for the one lie he discovered and showed you.

You've already been proven wrong and yet you can't accept it.

Here's a logic trail for you:

Recruiters were banned from the OCS office.

The OCS office is not campus.

Therefor, recruiters were not banned from campus.

Therefor Fox lied, even by the standards of the article you submitted, and you owe $1400. Pay up.

Fox News regularly says it is a 24 hour news network. However, they also post that they are only news from 9am-4pm and 6pm-8pm (EST). This is very obviously a lie, refuted by their own releases.

The fact that so many of you actually PREFER to view the world and its facts through party spin is the very essence of dumb.

The fools are championing a NEWS ORGANIZATION, an obviously biased news organization that's supposed to report unbiased fact in proper context through journalistic integrity.

Not passion-inflamed speculation, spin, and vitriol. You're caught in a lucrative game that sells opinion and rakes in cash based on appealing to the fears of the common man.

And another thing, this isn't a team-sport where you just root for the home team no matter who they put in front of you. It just doesn't get any dumber than that! Politicians represent each of you in different ways and on different socio and economic concerns. In fact, most of here aren't even through-and-through one side or the other. Just a day spent examining your lives would reveal a conservative or progressive value.

There is no more respect and mutual understanding. Only loud-mouthed malcontents and misunderstanding.

There are no wise men here.

(But thanks for visiting this fool's blogpost and upping his notoriety. Now he's playing the NEWS GAME.)

NO. The ORIGINAL discovery is at http://tinyurl.com/29nwucj, where I beat Matt by 14 hours.

What's wrong with you people? "Be honorable, pay Matt!" I was first, PAY ME! Sure, it's a small lie - Ross didn't say "earth-shattering", he said "any lie".

Yeah, Matt's lie is better, but so what? I picked a tiny lie so that even a child could see, without needing to think or dissect. Stop trying to give my gold to Mr Second Place! I want my money!

Doug - you owe Matt Gertz from Media Matters $1,400!!!

http://mediamatters.org/print/blog/201101030036

What I find absolutely silly is that you put out a "challenge" and then you resort to continuing to spread the Faux News lie in order to avoid being proved wrong. More importantly, this kinda poo-poo's on the idea that Fox News is fair and balanced, so I get it!! If you pay up the money, this kills the credibility of your blog since most of your talking points and commentary is derived from your daily cup of Joe while watching Fox News and Friends in the AM.

Do everyone a favor... And save some face. Pay up the money and move on... What's the worst that will happen???

King of the Americas said...

So, where's the response to this landslide of evidence as to Fox News lying?

It would appear that you own several gold coins to submitters...

Mike said...

Well I mean I only had about 3-4 minutes to look this up but I remember Hannity editing and using footage that was months old to report on a story that happened that day or the day before. Their editors get paid top dollar to edit the video I highly doubt someone pulls old film "by accident", edits it, submits it, it gets reviewed and still goes live.

http://www.bradblog.com/?p=7516

Please excuse the phrasing in the article it's very biased but the message is clear.

It was only reported by Hannity at the time (or that's all I've found in the limited time) and he pologized for the error in a later show so I don't really consider it a big deal.

Point is. Whether you believe it or not Fox News is just as capable of lying or bending or altering your perception of the truth just like everyone else. To blindly declare you never lie or falsify anything is honestly bs in my mind.

I got a challenge for you. You find me 3 Fox News "Reporters" and I'll give you my half eaten chocolate Santa from X-mas. He still has the head!

1) Must have eyes.

2) Hair optional.

3) Ability to speak.

4) Must report FACTS, not opinion.

After all the responses I hope the blogger has the capacity to learn and understand. Fox is biased and full of lies and misleading info. Please seek out the truth Fox is a disservice to any form of Democracy.

No point in complaining about it - there is no FOX addict with honor. Remember, honor and honesty are related, FOX and Truth are not.

DrThunder said...

Can you explain why you ignored my question? And please refrain from saying you 'pwned' me when you think up some random vague counter argument. In fact you may want to stop saying it in general. Posting that you pwned people just because you said so, is like an unpopular kid walking around school telling people he's cool. All you did was reply with your opinion, it's not like you caught anyone with their pants down.

To reiterate, these are your own words "documented lie repeated by Fox News reporters". Your entire challenge is mind blowingly vague, luckily it can work both ways.

To say Fox News repeated a lie, doesn't even necessarily mean they lied by accident (or on purpose for that matter). It 'could' mean Fox News reporters simply found out someone was lying, and did a segment on it.

So by this vague definition, every lie you have pointed out here by Obama or CNN or whoever, if any of them have been talked about on Fox News, it is (by definition) being repeated by them.

I guess technically the first person to point out Fox News repeated a lie is you. :P

Anonymous said...

So this is not a lie according to your criteria, but here's an excellent case of manipulation by Fox News. In this video, the network took audio from the 2010 CPA assembly and made it as such that this years winner was booed, when in fact he was cheered. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwo0Iyrh1Zk&NR=1
